We designed an original board game called INA as a minigame for Forgotlings!

We wanted to make a fun board game centred around simple rules that allow for different strategies and mastery—taking inspiration from Chess & Go ♟️

In INA, your goal is to claim as many squares as possible on the board. When you place your stones around a square in the grid, you claim that square. If you surround your opponents’ totem on the other side, you win instantly 🏆

Our team has backgrounds in film & animation 🎬 So we thought it'd be cool to share film storytelling techniques we used in Forgotton Anne!

PRISON BARS
When a character is trapped or has no control over a situation, this can be visually expressed through putting bars over or near them, to symbolise imprisonment. Sometimes this is also done with a light cast through vertical bars which fall as striped shadows on the character.

In the first scene, there is a gutter with the prison bar effect behind Anne, to indicate that she is trapped and has no control over her situation.

Another place where this technique is used is when the Caretaker is talking about Bonku's past.

Once Bonku disappears from the human world into the Forgotten Lands, there are striped shadows falling across his work desk, which visually suggest that he has now become trapped.

We displayed our indie game Forgotton Anne at an exhibition in 2022, which featured this interactive theater in augmented reality! Moving the iPad enabled you to look around the theater in AR.

In the Unity editor, the theater is actually set up as a long corridor to get the 3D parallax effect. In order to be able to show the theater in AR, we had to simplify it (shown in the overlay above the iPad in the left pic)
