The EU is cutting back on plastics and IT SHOWS!

On EU coastlines:
🌊 marine macro litter dropped by 29 %
🥤single-use plastic was reduced by 40 %
🎣fisheries-related items decreased by 20 %
🛍️plastic bags were also down by 20 %

This is encouraging news and more needs to be done to achieve zero pollution.

Since 1900, global mean sea level (GMSL) has risen about 21cm and at an accelerating rate.

Measured by satellites, GMSL reached its highest value ever in 2023 and could rise to 1 metre under a very high emissions scenario by the end of the century.

However, there are sizeable differences in sea-level change rates across Europe, as you may learn from our hashtag on “Global and European sea level rise”:

🔎 Further information on past and projected changes in sea level rise in your specific coastal region is available via the European Climate Data Explorer (see the indicator).

Rising sea temperatures trigger marine heatwaves that are increasing significantly in intensity and frequency—putting entire ecosystems, human health, and economies at risk.

Oceans, the planet’s greatest carbon sink, are absorbing more heat than the land. Since 1991, sea surface temperatures (SST) in Europe’s seas have increased by 0.3°C to 0.6°C per decade, with the Black Sea warming the fastest. These rising temperatures are fueling harmful algal blooms, threatening aquaculture, and even increasing health risks like vibriosis infections along Baltic and North Sea coasts.

Marine heatwaves don’t stop at the sea. They disrupt global weather systems, amplify heatwaves, and intensify heavy rainfall on land. The Mediterranean Sea’s heatwaves, for instance, are linked to extreme weather events in Europe.

According to climate projections, sea surface temperature in European seas are expected to increase another 2-6°C by 2100 under the high emissions scenario.

In 2022, 34% of the EU’s land area and 41% of the EU's population were affected by water scarcity.

Freshwater resources are critical to human health, nature, and the economy, but across Europe, these vital resources are under mounting pressure. Agriculture, public water supply, tourism, and industry are driving demand, particularly in southern Europe, where, in some areas, up to 70% of the population faces summer water scarcity.

The Water Exploitation Index Plus (WEI+) reveals the real picture of water stress, showing where seasonal scarcity is hitting hardest.

Climate change is projected to worsen droughts, intensify seasonal fluctuations, and amplify water scarcity across Europe.

Can we secure sustainable water use for future generations? Learn more about the challenges and what WEI+ is uncovering: https://www.eea.europa.eu/en/analysis/indicators/use-of-freshwater-resources-in-europe-1

Wetlands are areas where water saturates the soil 💧🌍 They link mountains to oceans, span national borders, connect different habitats and facilitate the movement of species.

Today on World Wetlands Day, we call attention to the importance of wetlands for our common future. They’re vital for maintaining genetic diversity and healthy populations. In fact, they support 40% of all known plant and animal species, including many endangered, threatened and endemic species.

However, wetlands face many threats including changes to their physical features and natural flow, such as dams and channelisation, which degrade natural habitats. Achieving free-flowing rivers and restored wetlands is essential for healthy, biodiverse freshwater ecosystems.

We are thrilled to take part again in the Copenhagen Light Festival 2025 edition together with the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service and the Copernicus In-Situ Component, once again collaborating with French artist, Simon Chevalier, and the Lyon-based company Atelier LUX.

This year's light installation is called Les Étoiles and is a homage to the stars and a plea for a more sustainable future.

Be sure not to miss it, if you're near Kongens Nytorv in Copenhagen, Denmark, between January 31 and February 23.

🌍 Happy International Day of Clean Energy!

Today, we celebrate the transition toward a green and clean energy future. The European Union has made remarkable progress, achieving a historic milestone: 24.5% of the EU's final energy consumption in 2023 came from renewable sources. 🎉

However, reaching the EU target of at least 42.5% renewable energy by 2030 will require more than doubling the pace of renewable deployment seen over the past decade and fundamentally transforming the European energy system. Find more about it from the : https://eu1.hubs.ly/H0g5rLG0

Let’s continue our commitment and investments to build a clean, green, and safe energy future for Europe! 💡⚡

🌍🏛️ Buildings and construction: key to a sustainable future 🏗️💡

Buildings are at the heart of our daily lives, shaping our economy, local employment, and quality of life. Yet, Europe’s building stock is aging, with many structures not designed for energy efficiency or the extreme weather events we’re facing more frequently.

Almost 75% of buildings in Europe are energy inefficient, and over 85% of these buildings will still be in use by 2050. Energy poverty, inefficient designs, and poor building conditions disproportionately impact vulnerable groups, compounding inequalities.

The EU's Renovation Wave is set to change this. By accelerating energy renovations and climate adaptation, it aims to make Europe's buildings more efficient, resilient, and aligned with the goal of a climate-neutral EU by 2050.

Did you know that the Arctic loses an area of ice ❄️ each winter equivalent to the size of Belgium? And during the summer, it’s more than twice that size!

Arctic sea ice is rapidly declining 📉. From 1979 to 2024, the sea ice area in the Arctic has decreased by 31,000 km² per year in winter and by 73,000 km² per year in summer.

The Arctic sea ice is also getting much thinner and younger 🧊. At least half of the observed loss in summer sea ice area can be attributed to greenhouse gas emissions produced by human activities 🌬️. The rapid changes in Arctic sea ice can trigger complex feedback processes in the global climate system, which also affect climate and weather extremes in Europe 🌡️.

🚗 Did you know? The average age of passenger cars in the EU reached 12.3 years in 2022, compared to 10.9 years in 2013. This suggests cars are potentially being used for longer, contributing to extended lifespans.

🔍 However, there are significant regional differences:

In Western Europe, the average lifespan is 18 years.
In Eastern Europe, cars last much longer—28 years on average.
The average car lifespan across the EU ranges from 8 to 35 years.

🌱 Explore more about the age of EU passenger cars and their circular potential in our Circularity Metrics Lab: https://www.eea.europa.eu/en/circularity/sectoral-modules/product-lifespans/evolution-of-the-average-passenger-car-age-in-the-eu-between-2013-and-2022

Today is a tough day.

It is , often called the "most depressing day of the year." To brighten your Blue Monday, here are some lovely urban animals! 🐾🐦

*Blue Monday falls on the third Monday of January. It’s considered a tough day as the festive joy of December fades and the weather remains grey and cold across much of the Northern Hemisphere.
