We are excited and proud to announce yet another speaker Mia Dand at the sixth annual RoboInsights event. Mia is the CEO and founder of Lighthouse3 and for over a decade, Mia has hosted 100+ virtual and in-person events to democratize and expand access to new technologies for people outside of the big tech-academia bubble. She created the first 100 Brilliant Women in AI Ethics list in 2018, which is now published annually, and funded an online directory as a helpful resource for hiring managers and AI conference organizers to recruit more diverse talent. Mia is on the Selection Committee for the Anita Borg ABIE Social Impact award committee and on the Advisory Board for Carnegie Council’s Artificial Intelligence & Equality Initiative. We are extremely happy to be able to welcome Mia to the RoboInsights event on Sept. 23, and hope you will take this opportunity to hear a world class industry expert share her experiences as well as opinions on "Building the Tech Future We Want" and "Women in AI Ethics".

Can we trust autonomous systems?

In this Talk Roberto Geleazzi will explain the concept of resilience and how this should apply to autonomous systems. Moreover he will present a case study in the contest of the autonomous ship. It is a fact that we may be attracted of using autonomous systems in our personal or business life in near future, for example for transportation. Such potential adoption should raise interest regarding the ability of such systems to withstand disruptive events, which could result in harmful outcomes for the humans in close proximity.
In practice we need autonomous systems to be resilient-by-design and able to safely operate although natural or manmade causes have reduced their functionalities.

Does our s*x determines our skills and preferences?

This question is raised by professor Gina Rippon at this year RoboInsight event.

RoboInsight-speaker Gina Rippon is Emeritus Professor of Cognitive Neuroimaging at the Aston Brain Centre, Aston University, Birmingham.
Her research involves state-of-the-art brain imaging techniques to investigate developmental disorders such as dyslexia and autism. She also investigates the use of neuroscience techniques to explore social processes such as gender stereotyping and stereotype threat.

Drawing on her work as a professor of cognitive neuroimaging, Gina Rippon unpacks the stereotypes that bombard us all the times and shows how these messages mould our ideas of ourselves and even shape our brains. By exploring new, cutting-edge neuroscience she urges us to move beyond a binary view of our brains and instead to see these complex organs as highly individualised profoundly adaptable, and full of unbounded potential.
