"Hej, taler du dansk?"

If you are confused by this question or your answer is ‘no’ then this guide is for you! (It means "Hi, do you speak Danish?"

Moving to a new country is not always easy. One reason is the language barrier and having to cope with feeling like a three-year-old again when learning a new language.

In our new guide, you can read some words of advice from CBS WIRE’s proofreader Helen Dyrbye, a British expat who has lived in Denmark for decades. Here she explains a few tiny words that can occasionally spell BIG trouble.

Moving to a new country is never easy, partly because you discover that your own cultural baggage weighs far more than you ever thought possible. But also because of another major challenge: how to cope with feeling like a three-year-old again when learning a new language – if not from scratch, th...

🌱 On a plot of land next to Kilen, CBS faculty Maribel Blasco and Isabel Fróes have realised their vision for how a business school campus can be used.

♻️ A garden, which is open to the whole Copenhagen Business School community and its neighbours, is taking shape.
The garden can offer an escape from lecture halls and offices and the chance to work with your hands, but the founders also see it as a different kind of place for and plan to bring their here.

🌿 The project has received funding from Frederiksberg Kommune and Frederiksbergfonden, as well as support from CBS Climate Club and CBS Campus Services, but mostly it is run by . The garden is still looking for more people who want to join in and get their fingers dirty.

😎☀️ Jackets off, sunglasses on.

For this month’s Humans of CBS WIRE’s photographer Anna Holte asked CBSers about their favourite spot.

Outdoors is where it’s at.

Jonas Fjord – BSc in Business Administration and Digital Management

“Out here by the stairs and car park at Dalgas Have there is sun, air and a good spot.”

PhD panel debate: focus on your PhD – the rest comes later

Don’t worry too much about disseminating your research. Not yet anyway. Give your all to your research and dissertation and concern yourself with becoming a good scholar instead.

The CBS PhD Association’s (PAC) panel debate ‘Engaged Scholarship’ made one thing clear: Dissemination can wait till later. Three years is hardly enough time as it is. Spend them on filling your academic toolbox.

“Get your toolbox in order and you will shine. You have plenty of years to do all that stuff. Don’t cram it into your three years of training here,” said professor David Lando.

The panel comprised four professors:

David Lando, Department of Finance
Marie Louise Mors, Department of Strategy and Innovation
Thomas Plenborg, Department of Accounting
Torsten Ringberg, Department of Marketing

Next PhD panel debate on 19 April, according to PAC chair Daniela Micu

Many nuggets of useful advice from senior researchers were given out when the PhD Association of CBS (PAC) organised a panel debate titled ‘Engaged Scholarship’ at Solbjerg Plads on Monday 27 March. The event targeted PhDs, Postdocs and Assistant Professors. The panel comprised four CBS professo...

Next week Green Week, organised by the student orgainsation oikos Copenhagen, and, the first Green Business Forum will be held at CBS.

The forum has grown out of a network of faculty and green student organisations. The event will bring together actors from all parts of society to share ideas and engage in dialogue to push the . 🌏

“The last few years CBS has had a strategic focus on playing a stronger role and showing the world what we can do in green transition. Many people think in terms of and technological discoveries when they think of how to solve the , but as a social science university we have so much to offer. Social sciences deal with aspects such as behavior, governance, legislation, and new business systems, but we haven’t been very visible or clear in that role,” says Hanne Harmsen, vice dean of green transition at CBS.

“It’s not a conference, not a festival, it’s a forum – whatever is on your mind – we get together and have an interesting discussion. We are not trying to create another research conference where faculty present their research of the last three years. It’s clever people engaging on current problems or dilemmas. They’re contributing from their expertise, but not necessarily with their own research.”

The events will feature a mix of , , professionals and local government representatives and includes panel debates, lectures and live podcast recordings.

“When universities do things with the external world it’s more engaging and more interesting,” says Hanne Harmsen.

Morten Ingvard Falck, Chief Information Security Officer at CBS also recommends students to stay away from TikTok as the platform poses a risk for CBS, but also, for individuals and their personal data.

Concerns over how much data TikTok collects and how it may be used have led the university to restrict use of the app. “Espionage is one of the threat scenarios, given the vast amount of data that can be used. TikTok collects a lot of data across the whole device, not just what the app […]

11 UN agencies are represented at UN City in Nordhavn. It’s about time Copenhagen gets its own Model UN conference, think the students of CBS United Nations. 🇺🇳

Next March, they will arrange a Model UN conference, where students simulate the workings of the UN, at Copenhagen Business School.

“It’s a big attraction for Copenhagen and I think that’s something a lot of European universities will consider,” says Gabriel Højskov from CBS United Nations.

Gabriel Højskov, a bachelor’s student in International Business and Politics and a member of CBS United Nations, says the organisation is aiming for around 100 to 150 delegates. “We’re not limiting ourselves to anything and not going to be disappointed if there are less people. The main point...

“The proposal contains both positive and disturbing elements and there’s no doubt that this will be very challenging for everybody at CBS" says Nikolaj Malchow-Møller, president of Copenhagen Business School, of the planned .

He is worried of the scale of the reform, which involves an unprecedented redesign of the Danish education system, but he also sees opportunities for CBS in it. 📚🏫👨‍🎓

Nikolaj Malchow-Møller is hopeful that the government’s financing proposal and the focus on opportunities means CBS should not have to cut faculty positions as a result of the shortened master’s programmes.

https://lnkd.in/ev877__8

Whether the education reform will be positive or negative for CBS is too early to say, Nikolaj Malchow-Møller writes in an email response to questions from CBS WIRE. “There are still many unknowns in the proposal, and we still don’t know the final political agreement. As I see it, the proposal ...

In the next few years, the Danish is planning extensive changes to the way is organised. 👨‍🎓

The changes include shortening many master’s programmes in the and to one year, which will likely have a big effect on CBS. 🏫

Both the student union CBS Students and The Professors' Association at CBS are critical of the reform, which they think will be to the detriment of those students enrolling in the shorter master’s programmes.

https://cbswire.dk/students-and-professors-fear-one-year-masters-but-welcome-english-programmes/

One part of the reform that was broadly welcomed at CBS, however, was the ambition to invest in more English-language programmes. By 2029, the government wants to have 2,500 places on English language part-time master’s programmes and as many on full-time master’s programmes. “This is positive...

🇺🇦 Ukrainian student Vladyslava Boiarska came to Copenhagen Business School for a course last summer but ended up staying for an exchange year. Now her dream is to apply for a full programme at CBS.

“I want to stay and finish my studies here, but I want to go back to Ukraine after the war ends. I want to help to rebuild the country and I think I can do it because of the knowledge I have gained here. I want to go back because it is my home country and I miss it a lot,” she says.

One fourth of Ukraine’s and higher institutes have been damaged in Russia’s war on Ukraine. One of them is Vladyslava Boiarskas home university, Karazin University in Eastern . Many of its historical buildings have been reduced to rubble. But the institution has persevered and continues to teach students online.

CBS has partnered with Karazin University and aims to bring 25 students to Copenhagen this ummer. Professors are also looking into other ways to collaborate at a distance.

“I think one of the most beautiful ways that CBS can help is through intellectual support. CBS can contribute to the continuation but also development of such an old university. Maybe we can help to redefine what kind of business school will come out of this terrible situation,” says Martin Jes Iversen, Vice Dean of International Education.

Will one-year master’s programmes weaken Danish and put extra pressure on students? Or are they just a different way of organising higher education? 👩‍🎓

Sebastian Zenker, programme director of Copenhagen Business School's one-year Master in and Hospitality Management, thinks the concept works – but it requires specialising and making some difficult choices.

“People are always hesitant to change. You know the two-year thing works, so why should you change? But after a couple of years, I’ve realised it works if you are willing to sacrifice certain aspects", he says.

Sebastian Zenker is the programme director for the Master in Sustainable Tourism and Hospitality Management, the only one-year master’s programme currently offered at CBS and one of very few in Denmark. The programme had its first intake in 2021. The second cohort will graduate this summer. The Ma...
