Cash in. Cash out. A cash crash about to happen?
The world is moving rapidly towards turning cashless, but rather than sleepwalking into a cashless society, let’s look at what to be aware of and how to prepare to build a more resilient world.
Are your prepared for the collapse that will occur if we are unable to pay electronically for a few hours, days, or weeks? Are your protected from the new golden hacking opportunities we are facing?
Societies turning cashless is often portrayed as a powerful and successful step by politicians, authorities, and banks. But it also renders society entirely dependent on a power grid, technology and the internet, thus completely immobilizing society in case power shortage, hacking, or other technical issues.
To make matters worse: many countries do not have a contingency plan for this happening, and many citizens are not aware of the vulnerabilities we can face.
Cashless is not riskless. These risks will surge:
I. Dependence on technology. If the system crashes, is unavailable, a system failure, cyber-attack or an event that leads to power shortage, people, society, and countries cannot access money and the economy can come to a standstill. No transactions can be completed.
II. Digital footprints. Some people call a cashless society a surveillance society – you leave footprints when your pay digitally. It can lead to more surveillance, fraud, and identity theft. And less privacy. With data breaches and cyber-attacks becoming increasingly common, the risks grow.
III. Security threat. A cashless society relies heavily on the security of digital systems, which are vulnerable to hacking, malware, and other forms of cyber-attacks. Digital systems can fail, breach, or be disabled, resulting in a loss of access to funds and important information. Electronic payments contain very sensitive personal and financial information, making it extra vulnerable to hacking and data breaches.
