This weekend: Two new female Talking Statues in New York!

This weekend, Ithaca, New York will unveil two new statues honoring significant female figures, and they have a unique twist—they can talk! 🗣️✨
Join us this Saturday, August 17, at 10 a.m. for the unveiling ceremony of statues commemorating INHS co-founder Lucy Brown and the first female presidential cabinet secretary, Frances Perkins. These masterpieces, crafted by the renowned sculptor Meredith Bergmann, are more than just art—they are storytellers.
By scanning a QR code, you will receive a call from Frances Perkins and Lucy Brown, voiced by local women from Ithaca. Lucy Brown, at the age of 86, contributed her own voice, sharing her life story and dedication to social justice. Frances Perkins' statue recounts her experiences, including witnessing the tragic Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire in 1911, which shaped her lifelong advocacy for labor rights.
Meredith Bergmann shared, “It’s wonderful for me that the Talking Statues program gives people a way to spend more time with my work, and to ‘meet’ the people I portray in such an engaging and informative way.”

Bringing History to Life: The Evolution of Talking Statues

From the mystical corridors of ancient Egypt to the bustling streets of 16th-century Rome, the concept of making statues speak has captivated our imagination throughout the ages. 🏛️

It all began when Egyptian priests ingeniously mounted secret tubes in statues to give them a voice, creating a sense of divine communication. This early marvel was not just about entertainment; it was about connecting with the ethereal and the unknown.

Fast forward to Rome in the 16th century, where the talking statues, also known as the "Congregation of Wits," took on a new role. These statues became the voices of the people, a canvas for political expression. Notes and papers were posted onto these silent figures, turning them into loudspeakers for public opinion, often satirical and critical of the social milieu.

And now, in our cyber age, this tradition has been reborn in a new form. In 2013, Copenhagen embraced the digital revolution by giving these historical figures a voice once again, this time through QR codes and mobile technology.

The journey from the mystical to the digital is a fascinating tale of creativity and innovation. Dive into the full story of how statues have "spoken" across history and how they continue to be a mouthpiece for cultural expression in our times.
