(TV TOKYO BIZ - “World Economy” - guest appearance. Scroll for English)

TV TOKYO BIZ - “World Economy”.
It was an honor to guest the episode about Denmark.
Part one has just been released on YouTube, and part two is soon to come.
TV TOKYO BIZ is a popular Japanese news channel with 1,72 million subscribers.
The program “World Economy” focuses on different countries and their unique economic situation.
In this episode about Denmark we talk about:
- The Danish welfare system
- Political participation
- The law of Jante, and the soft values such as solidarity and equality
- The approach towards immigration (from "Ghetto-plan”to recent examples of inclusive urban design)
- The safety net and flexibility of the society
I was invited to the program (30 min) to give a local perspectives on different elements of the Danish system.
I hope that I was able to add some insights about the Danish mind-set and what Danes take for granted.
The willingness to participate, the interest to discuss, the belief that things can be changed for the better, and the strong sense of democracy and equality.
Every year many Japanese delegations of companies and public institutions visit Denmark in order to learn from the Danish system.
My experience is that they towards the end are more interested in learning about the 'people' rather than the system itself.
Not everything about a economic system can be explained in numbers. If you cannot make people act and participate, a system will not last. Maybe some of the viewers will find my comments too vague, however, with my background I will argue that people and culture does matter in the economic system ;)
PS: In the end I was asked about the good and bad thing about living in Denmark.
Although, I know everything is not perfect I could not mention a bad thing. Like most of the Danes I am aware of how privileged we are in this country, and I did not want to close the interview by mentioning what could be seen as a “first world problem”. I also think that growing up in Denmark, we believe that problems can be fixed, and that nothing is perfect. Therefore it does not make sense to address a bad thing without being willing to suggest a solution. I guess the interview showed the humble Danish part inside me combined with the humble Japanese side inside me.
