A lot of people don't know this but each year there is a small independent jazzfestival in Copenhagen by the name of COPENHAGEN JAZZ FESTIVAL or COPENHAGEN CHEST FESTIVAL or COPENHAGEN J**Z FESTIVAL depending on who your parents are, how many Mongezi Feza albums you own and of course...the party political struggle of Denmark today.

I am spending some time with my collection of Sun Ra Research issues. So many great things in there..like June Tyson describing meeting Hartmut Geerken the first time or Sun Ra talking about the competitive energy between Lex Humphies and especially Clifford Jarvis (apparently thats why John Gilmore often played drums in the band as well. to neutralize that energy, because Gilmore was coming from a totally different place)
Also there is a wonderful description of Sun Ra´s concert with John Cage from Ra´s perspective.

And I would like to share this exchange between Ra (the Cosmo Drummer!), John Gilmore and John Hinds that I find very inspiring:
JH:Things seem to be really moving ahead as far as people becoming aware of you. it seems like you are getting more write ups'

This year I was approached by the Copenhagen Jazzfestival and asked if I would curate a series. I was given complete freedom to do what ever I wanted. I asked 4 of my favorite improvisers to come to Copenhagen and play music with some of our many great local improvisers in duo or trio settings. I am very proud of the result and grateful to Kenneth Hansen from the Copenhagen Jazzfestival for the opportunity and collaboration! LaDonna Smith, Els Vandeweyer, Joëlle Leandre and Maggie Nicols are coming!!! Its called the I/O series and I love that its happening at 11am each day, which is a time slot normally reserved for New Orleans parades or jazz for children. Its happening at Politikens Boghal right in the absolute center of town - not hidden away from the public in a backyard somewhere as free improvisation some times is (while there is a jazzy tribute to the Beatles or a reenactment of Kind of Blue on the main stages ... not talking about the Copenhagen jazzfestival here of course as I completely endorse that now that I am on board). So this year please get up early and hear these incredible meetings of international and local forces of music. The full schedule is below, but from the local scene are such names as: Maria Laurette Friis, Viktoria Søndergård, Henrik Olsson, Tanja Schlander, Randi Pontoppidan, Aurelius Uzameckis, Maria Bertel, Tomo Jacobsen, Anne Efternøler and Sarah Buchner

Hvad har jeg til fælles med Kulturminister Jakob Engel-Schmidt, studievært Erkan Özden og den danske ambassadør i Rusland: Jakob Henningsen?.. en masse indre organer og følelser samt, tænker jeg, en dyb respekt for Julius Hemphill som komponist og improvisator.. men vi har også det til fælles at vi er blandt de 95 nye navne der er blevet optaget i årets udgave af Kraks Blå Bog som udkommer i dag!

Kan du spille “Mouthbow” eller "Didley-Bo"? 🤔 Det er bare to af de instrumenter, som den legendariske amerikanske multiinstrumentalist Cooper-Moore har opfundet.

Mød ham i selskab med Kresten Osgood til en artist talk onsdag den 15. februar kl. 18 på Klein i Kbh. Cooper-Moore i er DK ifm. Vinterjazz, hvor han også spiller sammen med Osgood.

Som Vinterjazz skriver:
"75-årige amerikanske Cooper-Moore er et af den slags fuldstændigt egenrådige talenter, som i kraft af sin musikalitet og særegenhed formår at transcendere alle forestillinger om tilhørsforhold til både genrer og specifikke instrumenter.

I hans vidtfavnende, selvskabte instrumentarium finder man en lang række dybt personlige, logiske og veludviklede instrumenter som “The Didley-Bo” – en planke påført en eneste lang basstreng, som man spiller på med trommestikker, så det lyder som en blanding af funkbas og den menneskelige stemme.

Eller hvad med “The Mouthbow”, som er et stykke træ, man har i munden og spiller på med en violinbue, mens mundhulen former instrumentets tone..."
