SOFW is publisher of books and magazines for the cosmetic, household and personal care industry and Verlag für chemische Industrie H. and DGK e.V. associations.
Ziolkowsky GmbH
The Seifensiederzeitung (the soap boiler journal) was founded in Leipzig in 1874 and has been published by H. Ziolkowsky Verlag für chemische Industrie in Augsburg since 1876. Based on these origins, a modern professional journal, the SOFW journal, and all other communication platforms of SOFW (Verlag für chemische Industrie H. Ziolkowsky GmbH), for applied science in cosmetics, b
ody care, detergents and fragrance industry has evolved today. For almost 150 years now, the trade journal SOFW journal has accompanied the developments of the soap, detergent, perfume, body care and cosmetics industries in chemistry and technology and the careers of associations and societies. It is therefore the technical literature of this industry. With the growing introduction of research into the cleaning and cosmetics industry, SOFW journal increasingly published chemical-technical articles describing the practical application of science. Thus the journal became one of the most important sources of information for R&D. Today, the SOFW journal with its 3 language versions is one of the most widely read and best-known specialist publications in the industry worldwide. In addition to the trade journal, the publishing house publishes manuals and reference books in printed and electronic versions. The publishing house is also the organizer and co-organizer of various events, such as HPCI events, IFSCC congresses and SEPAWA CONGRESS in the industry and administers the SEPAWA e.V. SOFW offers the complete communications spectrum for the personal care, cosmetics and detergent industries worldwide.

Abstract | One of the primary factors driving the shift and growth of the preservative market is the increasing choice for natural cosmetic products, as well as elevated levels of beauty consciousness among consumers. Natural antimicrobial innovations have continued to progress as customers seek alternatives to synthetic preservatives. Furthermore, the growing popularity of natural cosmetic products has driven preservation to become an integral component of the formulation process, focusing not only on quality but also on unctionality. Preservation is no longer seen as the final phase in the formulation process, but rather as a need that may operate as multifunctional and offer cosmetic advantages to formulas. Active Micro Technologies has investigated the antimicrobial ability of the lichen Cladonia rangiferina as a broad-spectrum protection for cosmetic applications with good anionic system compliance. Featuring antioxidant capabilities, this active will also help protect your skin from internal and external stressors that may bring to premature aging. Company | Active Micro Technologi

Authors | Perrin A., Le Mestr A., Arcioni M., Garcia I., Meyrignac C., Capallere C., Qu X., Jiang Y., Botto J.M., Clay A.F. and Isabelle Imbert, Ph.D. Abstract | A new botanical extract was developed by Ashland to reduce dandruff formation. It is a natural and biodegradable product which contains sclareolide purified from clary sage flowers, a plant ancestrally used for its purifying and healing properties. A study performed by artificial intelligence pointed out a predictive link between the sclareolide molecule and the vitamin D3, known to play an important role in skin physiology as epidermal differentiation or microbial defenses. Based on these data, this botanical extract was investigated on scalp health improvement in order to decrease dandruff, a widespread uncomfortable scalp skin condition. In a first part, the efficacy of the clary sage extract was studied on yeast cultures, on structural markers of the epidermis and on vitamin D activation. In a second part, a clinical study was conducted on subjects affecting by dandruff and treated for 4 weeks with a leave on scalp formulation containing the botanical extract or a placebo. This study demonstrated the benefit of this new product on scalp health

About the lecture Chemistries traditionally used for preservation are under intense scrutiny from both regulatory bodies and consumers. But the move to greener solutions has been slowed by the challenge of meeting stringent performance requirements. This presentation provides a look at a new patent-pending preservation system that helps manufacturers use greener chemistries to create effective, sustainable products. By highlighting improvements made possible by this technology in terms of safety (e.g., skin sensitization), environmental impact and social responsibility, this talk illustrates the ways in which preservation performance and positive environmental impact are now coming together. Creating substantially greener cleaning products challenges sustainable acidic preservative efficacy that won’t be compromised at the neutral pH levels required for cleaning products. Acidic preservatives typically cannot function sufficiently above pH 4.5 – 5, but we will discuss a novel, patent-pending preservative system based on lactic acid from Corbion that enables efficacy in surfactants up to pH 7. IFF Health & Biosciences launches the next generation of liquid #enzymes for #detergents ... and on March 16, 2023, Dr. Arjen Hoekstra, Technical Director Home & Personal Care (HPC) Applications at IFF Health & Biosciences will introduce you to just that. IFF has invested a lot of energy in developing new enzymes using the latest protein engineering techniques and #formulation insights and will present them here. Don't miss these new #development #results and register now for free at: https://sofwevent2023-hc1-visitor.sofw.com/?utm_medium=post.&utm_source=facebook.&utm_campaign=int.fb.brand.event-homecare.&utm_content=registration. About the lecture Detergent manufacturers are looking for ingredients that can address the consumer’s need for sustainable and efficacious #cleaning products. In both (auto)dish and #laundry applications enzymes have a track record of delivering against these requirements. Enzymes are bio-catalysts and are produced from renewable feedstocks by means of fermentation. They can deliver both stain removal and fabric care benefits, and multiple enzymes can be combined in a detergent matrix. However, their use is not without challenges to the formulator, specifically when incorporated in a liquid detergent. Some chemicals are known to destabilize enzymes, whereas others are incorporated for improving enzyme stability. Traditional enzyme stabilizers based on boron are no longer desired due to their chemical classification and labelling requirements. Recent advances in protein engineering have enabled significant improvements in the properties of liquid enzymes, hereby minimizing the need for chemical stabilizers or making them redundant, even in multi-enzyme systems. IFF Health & Biosciences has invested in new enzyme development using the latest protein engineering techniques and formulation #insights, and will shortly commercialize the next generation of PREFERENZ(R) liquid enzymes for laundry detergents. About the speaker Dr. Arjen J. Ho

Microbioligy of #household appliances - Investigate, evaluate, develop new solutions ...and this in combination with the #chemistry used, a way could be found to combine #efficient energy use and an appropriate level of #hygiene. Prof. Dr. Dirk Bockmühl from Rhine-Waal University of Applied Sciences is one of our keynote speakers. When? At our digital SOFW eVENT on March 16, 2023 "Green the better Clean?". Be there and don't miss the latest input from the #homecare industry. Registration? ->https://sofwevent2023-hc1-visitor.sofw.com/?utm_medium=post.&utm_source=facebook.&utm_campaign=int.fb.brand.event-homecare.&utm_content=registration. The lecture For the sake of #sustainability, there’s a trend towards #lowertemperatures in #domestic appliances, such as automated #washing machines and #dishwashers, which is tried to be compensated by other parameters, such as longer program durations. This principle has been known for long and is supported by the concept of the Sinner circle, although its impact on the microbiological efficacy of a #cleaning process is not fully understood yet. The #microbiology of domestic appliances has hardly been regarded in the past, although most devices provide a suitable environment for microbial growth. Like externally introduced microorganisms, the microbial communities colonizing domestic appliances have to be considered as potential fomites. To be able to evaluate the putative hygiene risks resulting from these issues and to develop adequate solutions, there is a need for comprehensive investigations on the microbiological status as well as on the hygienic efficacy of the relevant appliances, also in combination with the used chemistry. By this means, it might also be possible to find a way to combine efficient energy use and a suitable level of hygiene. The speaker Born in Wuppertal, Dirk Bockmühl studied biology in Dusseldorf and did his PhD in microbiology on the human pathogenic fungus Candida albicans. Professionally, he

Abstract | Every day, our skin is exposed to many factors that promote premature skin ageing. Two key factors are also closely related to each other: UV radiation and free radicals. It is known that UV radiation alone is responsible for 80% of the visible signs of facial skin ageing [1]. Therefore, our skin needs a reliable repair and protection system. Following nature’s example, enzymes are ideal components for such a system, as they offer a highly efficient and long-lasting effect. The active ingredient Glorydermal® GUARD contains a synergistically acting complex consisting mainly of two enzymes: the repair enzyme photolyase, which is derived from microalgae, and an antioxidant enzyme in the form of an iron peptide. A liposomal encapsulation of the enzymes additionally improves their penetration into the skin. The repair enzyme photolyase repairs UV-induced DNA damage, the so-called CPDs (Cyclobutane Pyrimidine Dimers), very efficiently and faster than the body’s own repair mechanisms. The antioxidant enzyme neutralises ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) including free radicals long-lasting. Like an enzyme, it is not used up and therefore offers a long-term radical protection. With political uncertainties arising worldwide, a sustainable oil source becomes increasingly important in both terms: ecological and economical. Yeast oil, triacylglycerides produced by oleaginous yeasts, is a promising alternative or even replacement to plant oils like cocoa butter, palm oil and similar. It has a small ecological footprint, can be produced locally in a reliable manner and has unique characteristics making it functional in multiple applications. The following article aims to give an exciting glimpse into a trending topic and COLIPI, a startup located in Hamburg dedicated to leading the fat revolution. Abstract | Cosmetic products contain active ingredients that are intended to nourish, repair or protect the skin from negative influences. To ensure that these active ingredients remain undamaged on their way from the producer to the consumer and during application, an ideal compatibility of formulation and packaging is necessary. However, there is an increasing demand for recyclable, recycled, bio-based or overall more sustainable packaging. Can these packaging materials provide the same protective function as conventional packaging materials? To verify this, time-consuming stability tests have been conducted to date. With an innovative shelf-life modeling tool, it may be possible for manufacturers to predict shelf life several months into the future in just a few moments. Abstract | Consumers use whiteness as an indicator for washing performance. Graying of fabrics is especially observed after several washing cycles. To retain a high level of whiteness, even after multiple washes, BASF developed an antigraying solution that works on cotton and synthetic fabrics. The enzyme-chemistry solution increases the level of performance and convenience even at low temperatures. Using enzymes in combination with surfactants, polymers, and optical brighteners will take liquid detergents to the next level.
