Congratulations to Kateri on her new instrument! She choose a beautiful restored Markneukirchen lion's head violin, and a dark green Jakob Winter case with a music pocket. Kateri studies violin with Dr. Reese, and is also a member of the Jugendsinfonieorchester des Landkreises Kaiserslautern. Looking forward to many years of great music!

We took a short business trip over to Josef Böhm tools in Bavaria, which supplies hand-made brass and woodwind tools to instrument technicians throughout Europe. In addition to finding many tools we needed, we enjoyed a tour of their impressive fabrication workshop. We then made a run over to Thomann, Europe's biggest music store, and capped off the day with an excellent Indian curry before returning home the next day.

One of Dr. Reese's students is headed to Korea as his family begins a new assignment. He's also ready to move up to a full-size violin. We were able to send him off with a brand new German-made violin from CA Goetz jr GmbH, and a gorgeous new Jakob Winter case. Clear skies to the Miller Family as they begin this exciting new chapter together!

Did some brazing and key repair work on this flute this week before completing a full repad. When replacing flute pads, we use special clips to make sure the pads seat properly over the tone holes.

I had an interesting instrument on my workbench this week: a Buffet Prestige full Boehm-system clarinet. I did a full repad on the instrument for Lorraine Hester, who also plays in the Jugendsinfonieorchester des Landkreises Kaiserslautern.

The full Boehm system adds a few extra keys to the standard Boehm clarinet familiar to American players, including an additional low note. They can be quirky horns; the extra length changes the physics somewhat, so they feel a bit different to play than a standard Boehm clarinet. They are also pretty rare; I didn't see many of them in the US, and here in Germany most clarinets are made with an entirely different system.

Thanks to the Hester family for a chance to work on this cool instrument. It did turn out pretty nice, and I look forward to hearing it during rehearsals and concerts!

Participated in an instrument demonstration this week for students at Albert Schweitzer Gymnasium in Kaiserslautern. 5th graders were able to hear, learn about, and try out various instruments. I talked about reeds, how instruments developed over time, and the kinds of music composers write for woodwinds. My oboe student Benjamin was so proud to play his oboe for such adoring fans!

In the workshop this week: reedmaking!

Successfully finished 12 oboe and 5 English Horn reeds so far. Struggled a bit with a dodgy batch of cane and lost a few reeds during the process, but it is still very satisfying to take raw tubes of cane and turn them into finished reeds for myself and my students.
