Mengelicious Moments

Mengelicious Moments "Mengelicious Moments" is an online music video channel focused around the organ and classical music in general.

It was founded by me, David Boos, and my wife Olga Minkina, and we're driven by the urge to promote great music, as well as great instruments. Listening to an organ live is a special physical experience. It is nigh impossible to recreate this experience in an audio recording, and even if, you'll need a very expensive stereo to experience it. When part of that experience is lost, so is part of the

fascination. While video cannot make up for the loss in audio, it can bring us closer to the instrument, and - in combination with the audio - make us feel as if we are present in that room, looking over the shoulder of the organist while he or she is playing. That way, we believe, we can give people the opportunity to get a glimpse of what it means to be at such an instrument. For all those, that live too far away to visit such an instrument themselves, but also to encourage those that live close enough to come by and experience the instrument first hand. We quickly realized, that this is a new passion for us, to find new ways of sharing organ music with as many people as possible. We're not reinventing the wheel, there are other videos of organs out there, but we strive to reach for the highest standards. We might not have the technical means yet to do so, but we're working on it and we're persistent. We do not compromise when it comes to our artistic integrity, nor do we compromise when it comes to the instrument. But we do believe that the organ and the music belonging to it, has so much quality to offer, that there are plenty of people out there we can reach with our videos. Please SUBSCRIBE to our channel and or newsletter and visit our website http://www.mengeliciousmoments.com to find more background info, articles and other content, as well as an explanation of the word "Mengelicious". We hope you enjoy our videos and wish you plenty of "Mengelicious Moments" while doing so!

"So unfortunately we're out of Scheidemann for the moment, but may I interest you in some Muffat instead?"

"Lovely, I'll have a bit of vermischter Stil then."

"It's mostly Italian, though, but I can throw in some extra French ornaments to make it worth your while."

"No worries, mostly Italian is fine. I'm playing it on a North-German organ anyway."

It took some time (as is apparent from my summerly attire), but finally I have some vacation and got around to editing a video I recorded last year in Tangermünde. Obvioiusly you know the piece, a classic: Weckmann's Magnificat II. toni.

If some people derive a bit of joy from my rendition, I'd be more than pleased.

BTW: If you aren't subscribed to our Youtube channel Mengelicious Moments yet, consider doing so, it would help us get some traction going again. Years back we put out videos that garnered several thousand views, but after a hiatus (getting children et al) Youtube seems to consider us to be dead weight, meaning that even recordings in Tangermünde don't really gather any real traction. By interacting with the channel in one way or another, you might poke the bear Youtube and it may wake up to our existence again. Thanks in advance!

Frohe Weihnachten!

Almost there. In this clip I share my opinion on competitions as a career-path, while Robert Harris thinks it's important not to abandon our quest for excellency. Sounds edgy? Good, go ahead and click to find out what comes of it. And if you're interested, check out the full video linked at the end of the clip.

Another fragment from the first "open discourse" with Robert Harris. Is our classical music culture almost entirely reproductive, and what effect does that have on music-making? And what is our native musical tongue? Chime in and check out the full interview, if you haven't already!

(GERMAN ARTICLE) While I do believe that the analysis and criticism could be taken a lot further than just comparing employees of established orchestras and so-called free ensembles (with a sprinkling of gender pay gap on top), this article features nevertheless a few interesting numbers. The average income of freelance musicians in Germany is below 18k a year, in many instances even below 14k or even less (before taxes, of course). In comparison, the purported average income in Germany sits still at 34k a year (brutto).

Whatever we think about distribution of funding, or even significantly raising arts expenditure, this is a clear reflection of the level of appreciation of the arts in our society. We may like it, we may not, but I think it'd be foolish to believe that we just need to raise awareness that musicians are humans, too, or that we just need to be a bit more creative when it comes to marketing our next concert series.

Episode 1 of "Der offene Diskurs" (in English) is online. Dr. Robert Harris joined me in my studio last summer to discuss music, improvisation, language & the brain. As a musician and neurologist, he shares some fascinating insights on how we learn music and what improvisation can do to your brain. Highly recommended listening for anybody interested in questions of music, education, and the workings of our brain!
