Here’s me before I stopped dyeing my hair, inspired by (and other silver-haired gentlewomen). Who’s this dark and smoky ? Why, it’s Alta L. Price, the English voice of Mithu Sanyal’s IDENTITTI, of course! is fast approaching but we haven’t quite run out of talented translators yet. 🚬🚬🚬
Alta runs a publishing consultancy specialized in literature and nonfiction texts on art, architecture, design, and culture. Of the more than 40 books Alta has translated from Italian and German, novelist Juli Zeh’s New Year was a finalist for both the 2022 PEN America Translation Prize and the Helen & Kurt Wolff Prize. Alta’s most recent translations include Zeh’s About People (World Editions, October 2023), Italian philosopher Giorgio Agamben’s What I Saw, Heard, Learned… (Seagull Books, November 2023), and Alberto Giacometti’s selected family letters, Time Passes too Soon (Scheidegger & Spiess, June 2024).

Here we are with another of our talented translators for on 30 September – Mima Simić! Mima is a Croatian writer, an award-winning film critic, translator, and political activist. Her short stories have been included in numerous anthologies, and have been adapted for radio, TV and animated film. Her translations include works of fiction, non-fiction, literary theory, screenplays and films. She lives and works in Berlin. 🐻‍❄️🐻‍❄️🐻‍❄️

Another of our amazing translators we’re showing off about in the run-up to on 30 September: Abigail Wender! Abigail is both a poet AND a translator, who won second place in the TA First Translation Award for her gorgeous version of Iris Hanika’s THE BUREAU OF PAST MANAGEMENT. Her debut poetry collection, Reliquary, was published by Four Way Books in February 2021. Her writing and translations have appeared in Asymptote, The Cortland Review, Disquieting Muses Quarterly, Epiphany, Kenyon Review Online, New Orleans Review, SWIMM, Tupelo Quarterly, and others. She serves as president of Friends of Writers and vice-president of the Poetry Society of America. A graduate of the MFA Program for Writers at Warren Wilson College, she lives in New York City and Sheffield, Massachusetts. 🗽🗽🗽

Another of our talented translators in the run-up to on 30 September… Meet Grashina Gabelmann, who beautifully rendered Karosh Taha’s dual tale of Kurdish-German youths into English for us. As you can see here, Grashina is also editor-in-chief and a founding member of , a site-specific, interdisciplinary and award-winning publication focusing on one street per issue. In fact, it was her work on the bilingual magazine that brought her to translation – and we’re very glad it did! More of our talented translators in the run-up to International Translation Day on 30 September. This time it’s Sinéad Crowe! 🐦‍⬛🐦‍⬛🐦‍⬛
Sinéad comes from Ireland and has a PhD in German literature from Trinity College Dublin. She now lives in Hamburg, where she teaches English at the University of Hamburg and translates contemporary German literature into English. She won third prize in the 2015 Geisteswissenschaften International Nonfiction Translation Prize, and she and her co-translator, Rachel McNicholl, were shortlisted for the 2020 Schlegel-Tieck Prize for their translation of Pierre Jarawan’s Am Ende bleiben die Zedern (The Storyteller). For us, she captured the joys and sorrows of Lucy Fricke’s DAUGHTERS. You can read her translator’s note about the fine art of translating humour on our blog.

Next up in our parade of talented translators in the run-up to on 30 September: Annie Rutherford! Annie brought coals to Newcastle and owls to Athens, with her enscottification of ‘s THE PEACOCK. 🦚 🦚🦚 She’ll be one of the mentors for the National Centre for Writing’s Emerging Translator Mentorships from October, which she’s super looking forward to. It’s International Translation Day at the end of this month, when the whole world celebrates the hardworking heroes of international literature. We’ll be sharing news and views from the talented translators we’ve worked with. 🖌️🖌️🖌️ First up: Priscilla Layne, translator of Birgit Weyhe’s RUDE GIRL.
