Awesome Pictures

Awesome Pictures Awesome Pictures is a partnership between Peter Laqua of LAQUAFOTODESIGN, and Stephanie Spicer, writer/director. We make awesome movies in Rottweil!

Peter and Stephanie started making short narrative films together in the summer of 2016. While LAQUAFOTODESIGN focuses more on corporate photography and videography, Awesome Pictures tells stories, just for the fun of it. We hope you enjoy them! If you're interested in purchasing or funding a project, feel free to get in touch.

Nestled below the steep hills beneath the city of Rottweil, Baden-Württemberg, Germany lies a quiet valley called Neckartal. Once an industrial complex of nylon and gunpowder factories, it has recently been repopulated by a community of artists and craftsmen in what is known as the Künstler Viertel, or Artists' Quarter.

This video was to be the first in a series of profiles of all the artists in the Künstler Viertel. Because of Peter's death and the closing of LAQUAFOTODESIGN, the remainder of the project has been cancelled.

I hope you enjoy this video and find your way to Neckartal someday.

I'm very sad to share that Peter Laqua passed away this Sunday after a year-long battle with cancer. I'm so grateful I got to work with him for the past two years, creating four films together, and everything else in between. He wasn't just a great photographer and filmmaker, he was a great friend.

During July 2017, we shot a short space fantasy called Athibar for NASA's CineSpace competition. We enjoyed utilizing the retro machinery here in old industrial Neckartal, and one neighbor of the studio even built us a cool set to use. The whole project took about one month from start to finish--it was a lot of work and a lot of fun! We've gotten good reviews from the few family and friends who have seen it so far, and we hope NASA feels the same way!

The first film we made under the Awesome Pictures label was Die Neckarnixe, a modern retelling of a Grimms' fairy tale about a river mermaid who captures two children and forces them to do meaningless tasks for her. (Psycho!) The whole film was shot in one day here in the Neckar valley. Peter stood waist-high in the river for much of the shoot, and the actors had their share of getting wet too! We wrapped post production in early 2017 and submitted the film to Biberach Film Fest. We'll let you know if we get in!
