Sternenmädchen - Gilles Zeitschiff II
„Timothy Leary!” - This was “Sternenmädchen” Gille Lettmann’s almost breathed closing word on the 1974 album Gilles Zeitschiff, Vol. 1. The cosmic crew members Gille, Dieter Dierks, Jürgen Dollase, Harald Grosskopf and Mythos recorded Vol. 2 the same year, but it didn’t make it to a release – let’s say: due to circumstances.
Until now. Almost 50 years after its recording, ZEITSCHIFF 2 (TIME SHIP 2) finally takes off. Here, Gille conjures up Leary's spirit again, comets and stars whiz through space on fluorescent trails of rays - the Cosmic Couriers live up to their name. But unlike on the prequel, everything is integral here. The careful remastering ensures a compact sound, and where the "Queen of Sunshine" outshined everything else on the first record, there’s an organizing hand in ZEITSCHIFF 2 that provides clarity.
This hand belongs to the Italian pianist and conductor Roberto Cacciapaglia. The album Sonanze, produced in quadro by Rolf-Ulrich Kaiser, was his ticket to the circle of the Cosmic Magicians. Even if it wasn’t called this at the then time: Sonanze was an early approach to a genre we now call “ambient”. One senses the potential Rolf heard in Roberto’s music.
Dieter and Rolf knew how to integrate Roberto’s talents. ZEITSCHIFF 2 became a fluidly composed, effectively arranged work that radiates warmth and cosmic floating without lacking suspense. A work that brings the spirit of space rock from the early seventies to life, showing today on which tracks the Cosmic Couriers already walked back in the days.
GILLES ZEITSCHIFF 2 is more than a sequel. It’s also more than just a premiere: It’s a discovery.
