Bass-baritone Benjamin Chamandy made his role debut as Prison Director Frank last Saturday. Directed by Jasmina Hadžiahmetović, Johann Strauss’s “Die Fledermaus” - widely regarded as the pinnacle of the so-called “Golden Age of Viennese operetta” - will be presented in 13 performances at the Tiroler Landestheater in Innsbruck, Austria, between December 20, 2025, and March 8, 2026.

Exactly 100 years after its sensational world premiere at Berlin’s Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Alban Berg’s “Wozzeck” returns in Andrea Breth’s acclaimed production, conducted by music director Christian Thielemann. Once a notorious succès de scandale, “Wozzeck” went on to redefine operatic modernism, proving the power of large-scale atonal music drama and leaving an enduring mark on opera to this day. Baritone Simon Keenlyside leads the cast in the title role, with bass Friedrich Hamel making his debut as the First Apprentice. The production will be performed three times: on December 18 and 21, 2025, and January 4, 2026.

Anna Malesza-Kutny will perform the role of Gretel in a revival of Humperdinck’s "Hansel and Gretel" at Theater Magdeburg. One of the most enduringly popular works in the operatic repertoire, "Hansel and Gretel" is also unique among well-known operas in being conceived specifically for young audiences. Anna will appear in Karen Stone’s production on December 21, 2025, and January 8, 2026.

On December 14, coloratura soprano Georgina Fürstenberg made her acclaimed company debut at MusikTheater an der Wien. She created the role of Jacke in Kampe’s world premiere “Ich bin Vincent! Und ich habe keine Angst“, based on Enne Koen’s novel. Further performances of Johannes Schmid’s production, accompanied by Wiener Symphoniker, run until December 28, 2025.

Coloratura soprano Georgina Fürstenberg will make her company debut at Theater an der Wien. In the world premiere of Kampe’s “Ich bin Vincent! Und ich habe keine Angst” (“I Am Vincent and I Am Not Afraid”), she will create the role of Jacke on December 14, 2025. Jacke - short for “Jacket” - is Vincent’s new, cool classmate, with whom he gradually forms a friendship. Unfortunately, the two must take part in a week-long school trip during which events quickly spiral out of control. Bullied relentlessly by his classmates, Vincent is finally forced to confront his fears.

Michael Balke conducts 12 performances of Johannes Schmid’s production, based on the novel by Enne Koens, running until December 28 and accompanied by the Wiener Symphoniker.

At Aalto-Musiktheater Essen, tenor Aljoscha Lennert will sing his first Der Kavalier in Hindemith’s “Cardillac” on December 13, 2025 with three more performances in Guy Joosten’s production on January 4, 15 & 25, 2026. The day after the world premiere in Dresden nearly 100 years ago, Hindemith's work was panned by the press. Nevertheless, the premiere was a success. The second performance of this version in Wiesbaden under Otto Klemperer, who later also conducted the work at the Kroll Opera in Berlin, was even more successful. In the 1926/27 season alone, Cardillac staged 13 further productions.

Ekaterina Chayka-Rubinstein will make her debut as Mozart’s Third Lady in “Die Zauberflöte”. Initially presented in the colorful and dazzling guise of a magical farce, the opera gradually reveals its Masonic ideals. The mezzo-soprano will perform this role at Dresden’s iconic Semperoper on December 11 and 20, 2025, as well as on January 11 and 24, and May 7, 2026.

Latvian soprano Etīna Emīlija Saulīte makes her company debut in the title role of Silvia Colasanti’s “Anna A.” at Teatro alla Scala. The new opera, commissioned from Italy's most performed contemporary composer, premiered at La Scala in September. “Anna A.” conveys a universal message: the life of poet Anna Akhmatova, told in a language that seamlessly blends music and drama, reflects the history of 20th-century Russia and portrays the enduring conflict between art and power - a conflict that resonates profoundly in today’s world. Etīna Emīlija Saulīte will perform the role of Young Anna at the matinee performances on December 1 and 2, 2025. In bocca al lupo, Etīna!
