In this thought-provoking publication, Stanley Greenberg's photographs of urban parks and park systems designed by Frederick Law Olmsted are accompanyed by three essays by experts on history, sociology, and landscape architecture that complement the narrative and present an interdisciplinary vision of both Olmsted and Greenberg’s achievements.

The perfect book for nature lovers - not just on earth day!

KLIMT INSPIRED BY VAN GOGH, RODIN, MATISSE
The Viennese artist Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) is world famous for his golden, richly-ornamental works, his flowing colours and his sensuous portrayal of women. But where did he find the inspiration for his multi-faceted oeuvre in a time of rich artistic foment? How well did he know Vincent van Gogh? Did he ever see a picture by Henri Matisse? Modern European art was omnipresent in Vienna in around 1900. Klimt was deeply attentive towards the work of contemporaries like Rodin, Hodler, Van Gogh, Monet, Toulouse-Lautrec, Whistler and Matisse. Klimt Inspired by Van Gogh, Rodin, Matisse explores how he and adapted elements from a variety of artistic styles and counterparts. This stunning volume presents large-format illustrations of Klimt's work alongside those of artists who were close to him. These lavishly-illustrated pages offer new insight into not just the work of Klimt and his contemporaries, but also the ways that artists share innovations in style and subject. Available here:

It's the last week to catch Georg Baselitz: Six Decades of Drawings at the Morgan Library and Museum in New York City. This exhibition celebrates Baselitz's gift to the Morgan of fifty drawings covering the span of his entire career. They include examples from his iconic Heroes series and fractured drawings of the mid-1960s, his landscape and figure drawings from the 1970s, pastels and watercolors from the 1980s and 90s; and a recent group of Remix drawings that revisit themes from his early works. The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Albertina Museum in Vienna, where Baselitz made a similar gift. Bringing the two donations together, the show offers a breathtaking retrospective of Baselitz’s artistic development and highlights the central role of drawing in his practice. The show is on view until Feb 5 .

Can't make it to NYC? Take home an archive of this new treasure trove with the accompanying catalogue, Georg Baselitz: 100 Drawings From the Beginning Until the Present. It combines the 100 sheets to create an important new view of this great artist's entire oeuvre.

In 1990 on a journey through South India, the painter Bernd Zimmer was inspired by the pillared porticoes of the Hindu temples and conceived the idea for a hall of art surrounded by nature, supported by 121 individually designed pillars created by famous artists from all over the world. Together the pillars would support a common roof and form an art universe that stands for solidarity, international understanding, and respect for nature. Zimmer has been pursuing this idea and its realization as STOA169, a permanent art installation in Polling, Bavaria, for more than thirty years. Together the pillars forms an art universe which stands for solidarity, international understanding and respect for nature. This lavishly illustrated volume documents its creation, showing all the artists’ pillars in detailed individual photos.

Born on this day in 1839: the French painter Paul Cézanne, a pioneer in the development of Classical modernism. He's famous for his many views of the Montagne Sainte-Victoire, a hill near his birthplace Aix-en-Provence. The artist translated the interplay of sunlight and shadow on the constantly changing stone into more than 80 pictures on the threshold of abstraction. Countless artists, including Matisse, Derain, Picasso, Braque and Léger found inspiration in his deas on colour modulation and pictorial composition. To learn more, check out our monograph on Cézanne from the Great Masters of Art series. Author Christoph Wagner positions Cézanne as a genius who opened up a completely new view of the world through his paintings and watercolours. HBD Cézanne!

We're in the bag! Thanks to The Art Newspaper for including our new title, Etel Adnan, in their January Book Bag Roundup! This monograph on the late Lebanese poet and artist Etel Adnan accompanies her first comprehensive German survey at the Lenbachhaus und Kunstbau Münchens in Munich (til Feb 26).

The famed writer Adnan (1925–2021) spent her life between Lebanon, France and California. This volume presents her artistic personality among a combined exploration of her texts, paintings, tapestries and folded paper pieces called "leporellos." Poised between the contexts of her feminist perspective and postcolonial cultural exchange, the book celebrates a truly cosmopolitan artis to whom painting represented the love of the world.

The Swiss artist Stéphane Zaech literally sees the old masters with new eyes. Muses worthy of Titian, Velasquez and Picasso sprout new limbs and strange faces to conjure the multifarious structures of time and art history. Seemingly dissonant pieces serve as dialogues with audiences both past and present, transforming tropes of classical beauty into a beguiling, smiling riddle. Meet this strange gaze with with Stéphane Zaech: Nefertiti, a stunning new monograph of over one hundred paintings from the past decade.

05/01/2023

2023 is off to a strong start! We're so pleased to share that The Candy Store: Funk, Nut, and Other Art with a Kick from the Crocker Art Museum has made the Hyperallergic list of the top 50 exhibitions of 2022! In the words of author Clayton Schuster:

"The Candy Store was an elegy about one of the most important figures in Northern California art, the gallerist Adeliza McHugh. Many of the artists with work in the exhibition (Robert Arneson, Gladys Nilsson, Luis Jimenez) now have large platforms. So many of those artists wouldn’t have that today without McHugh supporting them creatively and financially for three decades. Northern California art, to me, is all about freedom and risk. It’s important to see what McHugh and her Candy Store nurtured. It’s difficult to imagine a place like that surviving for so long in the current art market and financial ecosystem. She wasn’t in it for profit or fame, she wanted to promote creativity. We need more of that."

The beautifully quirky publication pays tribute to the legendary candy-store-turned-art gallery of California and its amazing roster of artists. It recounts how McHugh helped put the funkz, irreverent aesthetic of California’s Central Valley on the art-historical map at her legendary Candy Store Gallery, which she opened in Folsom, California, in 1962. Published on the sixtieth anniversary of the gallery’s founding, this catalog is the most significant publication to date on the Candy Store. It celebrates, as McHugh liked to say, art with a “kick.”

A beautiful opening introduction to this important show from the TThe New York Times To Be Seen explores the lives of q***r people in early-twentieth century Germany in the lead-up to the rise of Na**sm. Edited by Mirjam Zadoff and Karolina Kühn, the volume further explores those lives caught between empowerment and stigmatization during that era, from the first emancipation movements around the turn of the century to the destruction of q***r subcultures under the National Socialist regime and the continued discrimination against LGBTIQ* persons in the postwar period. It's Day of the Dead (Día de los Mu***os)! Celebrated on November 1 across different parts of Latin America and its diasporas, this important holiday calls families to gather to pay their respects to the dead. Joyful celebrations of life and memory often emerge through the use of of calaveras (skulls), marigold flowers, altars (ofrendas), and the world-famous iconography of enlivened skeletons popularized by the artist Jose Guadalupe Posada.

This pictorial tradition is central to the work of the Mexican contemporary artist Nicolás de Jesús, whose solo show is now on view at Neuberger Museum of Art at SUNY-Purchase in New York. De Jesús has become known for his dazzling skeleton characters etched on amate, a bark paper used in Pre-Columbian times to paint manuscripts. His political commitments manifest in powerful large-scale paintings and banners that engage a wide range of urgent issues, including immigration, human rights, and environmental instability. Curated by Patrice Giasson with the assistance of Alexandra Hunter, the exhibition is on view from September 7 through December 23, 2022. The book features powerful essays that explore de Jesús' engagement with pressing political issues of our time.

In 1963, as civil rights protests swirled across the segregated state of Mississippi, the integrated community at Tougaloo College founded the state's first collection of modern art. Leaders from the New York art world helped turn The College into a hub for a rich program of art acquisitions, giving rise to “an in*******al oasis in which the fine arts are the focus and magnet.” This history comes to light in the new exhibition, Art and Activism at Tougaloo College at the The Amistad Center for Art & Culture at the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, CT. Curator Turry Flucker illuminates the collection's place at the intersection of modern art and social justice to show how collecting practices can serve the fight for civil rights. The publication brings together two essays (with Asma Naeem) and 35 beautiful reproductions of works by Francis Picabia, Jacob Lawrence, Alma Thomas, and more.

We're so proud to see it named among four important new exhibitions on African and African American artists in the The New York Times! You can catch the show in Hartford through Jan 15, 2023, when it will travel to the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, Oklahoma City Museum of Art, Harrisburg’s Susquehanna Art Museum, and the Figge Art Museum in Davenport, Iowa.

In 1968, the German artist Heinz Mack installed his legendary reflective light columns to mirror the Tunisian desert sun. MACK SAHARA From ZERO to Land Art: Heinz Mack's "Sahara Project” (1959–1997) comprehensively records the history and ideas behind this spectacular project over four decades. Author Sophia Sotke traces an arc from the conception of the project in 1958 via the sensational film Tele-Mack (1968), to the subsequent expedition into Artificial Gardens in Algeria and Greenland, to his artistic experiments in the Wahiba Desert in Oman in 1997. She examines the importance of the Sahara Project in Mack's oeuvre together with his role in the development of Land Art. Hitherto unpublished photos of the expeditions into the desert and the Arctic regions provide new insights.

Happy Birthday to Alberto Giacometti, born on this day in Borgonovo, Switzerland in 1901! The Swiss modern artist sought to forge a new language for sculpture as the double of reality. His work was particularly influenced by artistic styles such as Cubism and Surrealism, as well as deep philosophical questions about the human condition. His intellectualism brought him into close contact with some of the twentieth century's most influential writers and thinkers. Our past title Alberto Giacometti: Face to Face highlights the artist’s lasting friendships with the three great writers Georges Bataille, Jean Genet, and Samuel Beckett. This wonderful exhibition catalogue from the Moderna Museet Stockholm sets out to trace how their exchanges marked Giacometti’s oeuvre. Its fresh approach to his work establishes continuities among modernist thought while still providing an accessible overview of his career.

Katharina Grosse's expansive paintings celebrate the processual and the unfinished. They are executed in situ: often applied directly onto walls, staircases, trees, and other structures, and she is known for her use of a spray gun to create cloud-like effects. Her work has recently appeared in recent solo exhibitions at the Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin, the Baltimore Museum of Art, and the Helsinki Art Museum. Created in direct collaboration with Grosse's studio, the handsome publication A Cloud in the Form of a Sword leads the reader through her multidimensional work and illustrates the broad creative spectrum of this exceptional artist’s oeuvre.

From the bridal bouquet to the funeral wreath, flowers have been a popular motif in life and art for centuries. They have inspired artists as symbol for love and life, decay and destruction. Our new volume, FLOWERS! features more than one hundred and twenty works in a variety of media, including painting, photography, video, and installation. This lavishly-illustrated book offers an art-historical review and essays on the political dimensions and everyday culture of our dealings with flowers. It traces their shifting meanings in multiple cultural contexts: the study of color and form via sociopolitical and gender-specific questions, reflections on existence and the environment, and new technologies.

HIRMER PUBLISHERS

Art books which set standards – this is the vision of Hirmer Publishers. Ever since it was founded by Professor Dr. Max Hirmer in 1948, the publishing house has been determined to maintain the highest quality, frequently winning awards for doing just that. Today, Hirmer Publishers with its headquarters in Munich ranks among the most prestigious publishers of art books. The subjects of Hirmer books span a wide range of areas from painting, photography, architecture, design, sculpture, and drawings to fashion, and the history of culture and include series of academic publications as well as extensive catalogues raisonnés. In recent years, Hirmer Publishers has increasingly turned its focus to contemporary art without neglecting its traditional roots in fields such as archaeology and the decorative arts. Within the broad spectrum of its programmes, Hirmer´s much-praised exhibition catalogues form a unique constant. Here Hirmer maintains its reputation as a competent partner of museums, art galleries and universities. The publishing company has for many years cultivated relationships with leading venues of art and culture in both the German-speaking region and internationally. Through its cooperation with Thames & Hudson and the University of Chicago Press, Hirmer has a worldwide sales network at its disposal for its large programme of English books. Moreover, Hirmer Publishers edits author’s books which are prepared over a period of years and then developed and produced in-house. Hirmer’s collector’s editions – strictly limited editions of signed and numbered original works – are also quickly becoming a tradition. »You can find outstanding illustrated books on art, photography and architecture at Hirmer, an exclusive and elegant address.« Süddeutsche Zeitung
