In this thought-provoking publication, Stanley Greenberg's photographs of urban parks and park systems designed by Frederick Law Olmsted are accompanyed by three essays by experts on history, sociology, and landscape architecture that complement the narrative and present an interdisciplinary vision of both Olmsted and Greenberg’s achievements.

The perfect book for nature lovers - not just on earth day!

Greenberg turns each knot and second growth, every ancient groove and gnarled root into a badge of honor—and defiance…In the form o

KLIMT INSPIRED BY VAN GOGH, RODIN, MATISSE
The Viennese artist Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) is world famous for his golden, richly-ornamental works, his flowing colours and his sensuous portrayal of women. But where did he find the inspiration for his multi-faceted oeuvre in a time of rich artistic foment? How well did he know Vincent van Gogh? Did he ever see a picture by Henri Matisse? Modern European art was omnipresent in Vienna in around 1900. Klimt was deeply attentive towards the work of contemporaries like Rodin, Hodler, Van Gogh, Monet, Toulouse-Lautrec, Whistler and Matisse. Klimt Inspired by Van Gogh, Rodin, Matisse explores how he and adapted elements from a variety of artistic styles and counterparts. This stunning volume presents large-format illustrations of Klimt's work alongside those of artists who were close to him. These lavishly-illustrated pages offer new insight into not just the work of Klimt and his contemporaries, but also the ways that artists share innovations in style and subject. Available here:

It's the last week to catch Georg Baselitz: Six Decades of Drawings at the Morgan Library and Museum in New York City. This exhibition celebrates Baselitz's gift to the Morgan of fifty drawings covering the span of his entire career. They include examples from his iconic Heroes series and fractured drawings of the mid-1960s, his landscape and figure drawings from the 1970s, pastels and watercolors from the 1980s and 90s; and a recent group of Remix drawings that revisit themes from his early works. The exhibition is organized in collaboration with the Albertina Museum in Vienna, where Baselitz made a similar gift. Bringing the two donations together, the show offers a breathtaking retrospective of Baselitz’s artistic development and highlights the central role of drawing in his practice. The show is on view until Feb 5 .

Can't make it to NYC? Take home an archive of this new treasure trove with the accompanying catalogue, Georg Baselitz: 100 Drawings From the Beginning Until the Present. It combines the 100 sheets to create an important new view of this great artist's entire oeuvre.

In 1990 on a journey through South India, the painter Bernd Zimmer was inspired by the pillared porticoes of the Hindu temples and conceived the idea for a hall of art surrounded by nature, supported by 121 individually designed pillars created by famous artists from all over the world. Together the pillars would support a common roof and form an art universe that stands for solidarity, international understanding, and respect for nature. Zimmer has been pursuing this idea and its realization as STOA169, a permanent art installation in Polling, Bavaria, for more than thirty years. Together the pillars forms an art universe which stands for solidarity, international understanding and respect for nature. This lavishly illustrated volume documents its creation, showing all the artists’ pillars in detailed individual photos.

Born on this day in 1839: the French painter Paul Cézanne, a pioneer in the development of Classical modernism. He's famous for his many views of the Montagne Sainte-Victoire, a hill near his birthplace Aix-en-Provence. The artist translated the interplay of sunlight and shadow on the constantly changing stone into more than 80 pictures on the threshold of abstraction. Countless artists, including Matisse, Derain, Picasso, Braque and Léger found inspiration in his deas on colour modulation and pictorial composition. To learn more, check out our monograph on Cézanne from the Great Masters of Art series. Author Christoph Wagner positions Cézanne as a genius who opened up a completely new view of the world through his paintings and watercolours. HBD Cézanne!

We're in the bag! Thanks to The Art Newspaper for including our new title, Etel Adnan, in their January Book Bag Roundup! This monograph on the late Lebanese poet and artist Etel Adnan accompanies her first comprehensive German survey at the Lenbachhaus und Kunstbau Münchens in Munich (til Feb 26).

The famed writer Adnan (1925–2021) spent her life between Lebanon, France and California. This volume presents her artistic personality among a combined exploration of her texts, paintings, tapestries and folded paper pieces called "leporellos." Poised between the contexts of her feminist perspective and postcolonial cultural exchange, the book celebrates a truly cosmopolitan artis to whom painting represented the love of the world.

Shout out to Hyperallergic for the new review of Stanley Greenberg's Olmsted Trees! This great post attends to the contributions and complexities around the pioneering American landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, the designer of many iconic American public parks (NYC's Central Park & Prospect Park, Boston's Emerald Necklace, the US Capitol Grounds, etc). It beautifully describes arboreal heritage as a kind of evergreen monument which changes alongside the course of history itself: "Greenberg’s 100 black-and-white photographs captured in 26 of Olmsted’s city park projects portray elements that have only recently grown into their full expression, something the architect himself would not live to see." Monumental.

The Swiss artist Stéphane Zaech literally sees the old masters with new eyes. Muses worthy of Titian, Velasquez and Picasso sprout new limbs and strange faces to conjure the multifarious structures of time and art history. Seemingly dissonant pieces serve as dialogues with audiences both past and present, transforming tropes of classical beauty into a beguiling, smiling riddle. Meet this strange gaze with with Stéphane Zaech: Nefertiti, a stunning new monograph of over one hundred paintings from the past decade.
