Keep it a Secret

It's been a couple of days since the 15th anniversary of Keep it a Secret, and I think I kind of caught up on sleep now. A little summary: I always ran Keep it a Secret as a one-person thing but that's mainly to not have to coordinate schedules. The obvious truth is I didn't run this festival alone but with a lot of help from friends who cooked, who did an amazing job with the sound, who did bar and door duty, who helped clean up, who filled up the backstage fridge and did various other things so I was also able to enjoy the music. Thank you all !

Speaking of music: I was fortunate enough to book a diverse lineup of great bands, some of them friends for ages, some new friends, some played Kreativfabrik for the first time, some played here already in 2009. I enjoyed every single chord that weekend, and I hope you did too.

New review for Old Maps. 👌

Manchmal reicht ein Blick auf ein Plattencover, um neugierig zu werden. In diesem Fall war es ein unscheinbares Foto einer Backsteinfassade mit Fenster, schlicht und ehrlich. 10-Inch-Vinyl, rotes Presswerk. Die neue EP von Old Maps erschien im Mai diesen Jahres über Keep it a Secret. Eine Band die ich bis vor kurzem noch gar nicht auf dem Schirm hatte. Gegründet haben sich Old Maps 2022, mitten in der Pandemie, in Frankfurt. Die drei Bandmitglieder sind alles andere als Neulinge – man sieht ihnen an, dass sie schon länger unterwegs sind, musikalisch wie menschlich. Und das hört man auch. Denn was hier geboten wird, ist kein auf jung getrimmtes Debüt, sondern klingt nach Menschen, die wissen, was sie tun.

Musikalisch bewegen sich Old Maps zwischen emotionalem Gitarrenrock und melodischem Punk – irgendwo in der Tradition von späten Neunzigern bis frühen Zweitausendern. Fans von Samiam oder Pale dürften sich direkt zuhause fühlen. Die Band nennt diese Referenzen auch selbst – und trifft damit den Nagel auf den Kopf. Zwar reicht das Songwriting (noch) nicht ganz an diese Größen heran, aber das Potenzial ist da. Was etwas stört, ist die sehr deutliche deutsche Färbung der englischen Vocals, die den ansonsten stimmigen Gesamtsound gelegentlich aus dem Takt bringt. Inhaltlich hingegen überzeugen die Texte mit persönlicher Tiefe.

Eingespielt wurde das Ganze live im Studio – und das ist eine Stärke der EP. Die Aufnahmen wirken ungeschönt, direkt, fast schon roh. Keine glatte Produktion, keine aufgeblasene Nachbearbeitung. Stattdessen ein ehrlicher, unmittelbarer Sound, der die Energie und Haltung der Band gut transportiert. „You Might Be Young But We Know The Chords“ ist kein revolutionäres Statement – aber eine ehrliche, charmante EP mit Herz. Gerade für Liebhaber des Emo-/Punk-Sounds um die Jahrtausendwende eine klare Empfehlung. Die Auflage ist auf 200 Exemplare limitiert – wer sich ein Exemplar sichern will, sollte also nicht zu lange warten.
