Keep it a Secret

It's been a couple of days since the 15th anniversary of Keep it a Secret, and I think I kind of caught up on sleep now. A little summary: I always ran Keep it a Secret as a one-person thing but that's mainly to not have to coordinate schedules. The obvious truth is I didn't run this festival alone but with a lot of help from friends who cooked, who did an amazing job with the sound, who did bar and door duty, who helped clean up, who filled up the backstage fridge and did various other things so I was also able to enjoy the music. Thank you all !

Speaking of music: I was fortunate enough to book a diverse lineup of great bands, some of them friends for ages, some new friends, some played Kreativfabrik for the first time, some played here already in 2009. I enjoyed every single chord that weekend, and I hope you did too.

New review for Old Maps. 👌

Manchmal reicht ein Blick auf ein Plattencover, um neugierig zu werden. In diesem Fall war es ein unscheinbares Foto einer Backsteinfassade mit Fenster, schlicht und ehrlich. 10-Inch-Vinyl, rotes Presswerk. Die neue EP von Old Maps erschien im Mai diesen Jahres über Keep it a Secret. Eine Band die ich bis vor kurzem noch gar nicht auf dem Schirm hatte. Gegründet haben sich Old Maps 2022, mitten in der Pandemie, in Frankfurt. Die drei Bandmitglieder sind alles andere als Neulinge – man sieht ihnen an, dass sie schon länger unterwegs sind, musikalisch wie menschlich. Und das hört man auch. Denn was hier geboten wird, ist kein auf jung getrimmtes Debüt, sondern klingt nach Menschen, die wissen, was sie tun.

Musikalisch bewegen sich Old Maps zwischen emotionalem Gitarrenrock und melodischem Punk – irgendwo in der Tradition von späten Neunzigern bis frühen Zweitausendern. Fans von Samiam oder Pale dürften sich direkt zuhause fühlen. Die Band nennt diese Referenzen auch selbst – und trifft damit den Nagel auf den Kopf. Zwar reicht das Songwriting (noch) nicht ganz an diese Größen heran, aber das Potenzial ist da. Was etwas stört, ist die sehr deutliche deutsche Färbung der englischen Vocals, die den ansonsten stimmigen Gesamtsound gelegentlich aus dem Takt bringt. Inhaltlich hingegen überzeugen die Texte mit persönlicher Tiefe.

Eingespielt wurde das Ganze live im Studio – und das ist eine Stärke der EP. Die Aufnahmen wirken ungeschönt, direkt, fast schon roh. Keine glatte Produktion, keine aufgeblasene Nachbearbeitung. Stattdessen ein ehrlicher, unmittelbarer Sound, der die Energie und Haltung der Band gut transportiert. „You Might Be Young But We Know The Chords“ ist kein revolutionäres Statement – aber eine ehrliche, charmante EP mit Herz. Gerade für Liebhaber des Emo-/Punk-Sounds um die Jahrtausendwende eine klare Empfehlung. Die Auflage ist auf 200 Exemplare limitiert – wer sich ein Exemplar sichern will, sollte also nicht zu lange warten.

Der AStA-Arbeitsbereich für Kultur präsentiert:

ENDSTATION SANIFAIR aus Mainz/Stuttgart sind drei eigentlich eher stille Mittzwanziger, die auf der Bühne den inneren Lärm mit voller Wucht nach außen kehren. Heraus kommt eine hüpfbare Mischung aus Post-Punk, Shoegaze und Grunge – Apokalypse, aber mit Konfetti.
Johannes (Schlagzeug), Jelena (Gitarre/Gesang) und Viktor (Bass/Gesang) haben sich 2024 zu Endstation Sanifair formiert und schreiben seitdem zusammen Songs mit deutschsprachigen Texten. Im Sommer wird endlich die Debüt-EP von Endstation Sanifair erscheinen.

Mit am Start: BISTRO TORNADO aus Wiesbaden. Vier Köpfe, die sich nicht nur dem Strom widersetzen, sondern ihn mit einem Blitzschlag in eine völlig neue Richtung zogen. Tornadorock – ein Genre, das die Welt nicht kommen sah.
Und auch wenn die Welt stillsteht, dreht sich der Bistro Tornado weiter – von Club zu Club, von Stadt zu Stadt, mit einer Message: Wenn du es nicht hören kannst, dann musst du es fühlen.

Nachdem ihr Tourtermin 2023 leider verschoben werden musste, kommt die Band aus Montreal endlich ins Kulturcafe. THE LAST MILE are relentless. They’re a hardcore punk band at their core with a vicious intensity and sing-alongs that can captivate a room full of people. They have an infectious
energy that they carry with them on and off the stage that has resonated with people across the globe.
They are often considered too punk for the hardcore kids or too hardcore for the punks until you see them live. Proving themselves onstage time and time again, while touring with the likes of Title Fight, Comeback Kid, and Satanic Surfers and sharing the stage with bands like NOFX, Petrol Girls, Iron Chic, and La Armada. They’ve played festivals in the US and
Europe such as FEST, Obenuse, Rhinos Feroce, Bearded Punk Fest, and more.
With the release of their second full length, Holding On To Hope, collectively released on Thousand islands Records and Pavones Records, the band are moving forward and
intensifying their sound.

Als Support spielen CITY SPEAK aus Mainz/Wiesbaden: In irgendeinem Lockdown gegründet ist im August 2024 das Debütalbum „Holding Water“ auf LP/CD bei Shield Recordings (NL), Snappy Little Numbers (US), Cat’s Claw Records (UK) und Keep it a Secret Records (Deutschland) erschienen.
Thematisch beschäftigt sich das Trio gerne mit leichter Kost (Patriarchat, Obrigkeitshörigkeit, Ausbeutung durch multinationale Konzerne), stellt aber auch die schweren, wichtigen Fragen (Ananas auf Pizza – ja oder nein?) und packt das Ganze in Songs, die nach „‘77er Punk mit einer Prise TSOL“ (Torben Müller, Musikologe) klingen.

Happy release day to KSR037! .maps.band debut record "You Might Be Young But We Know The Chords" is out today on Bandcamp and vinyl (with all other platforms following a bit later). Four rocking emo punk songs for on a 10 inch vinyl record, no expenses spared!
Well, it's time now to head to their record release show!

I've put on numerous shows for over the years but nothing will ever come close to their 25th anniversary show in Athens this Saturday. It was the perfect setting to finally see one of their hometown shows with a whopping 44 (or 45?) songs. So good.
