The Danish duo Bremer/ McCoy, announced their sixth album, Kosmos, out September 6th via Luaka Bop, and share the album’s lead single “Alting Løser Sig”. Against all odds, the duo have created their own understated cosmos in a noisy time. The appropriately titled Kosmos sees Bremer/McCoy aiming to convey a worldview founded on deep connectedness and a sense of freedom.

Some of the wholly improvised, airy melodies that make up Kosmos have been simmering for the 15 years that Bremer and McCoy have been playing with each other; and together with new material, they create a statement without exclamation marks or large fonts. Kosmos is two Danish musicians’ attempt to capture the world they stand for—and that they wish to share with others. The album represents a worldview, and in Bremer/McCoy’s cosmos, we can meet each other without words.

Happy Release day for and their new album ‚Keep The Outside Open‘ - out now via

Apifera, the group of Nitai Hershkovits, Yuvi Havkin, Amir Bresler and Yonatan Albalak, releases their new album Keep The Outside Open. A melting pot of influences, Apifera’s second record for Stones Throw combines prog, post-rock and psychedelia, with the members’ shared background in jazz tying it all together.

Apifera’s Stones Throw debut Overstand was instrumental, but when it came to recording Keep The Outside Open, the band felt ready to try a more intimate approach. Late-night smoke sessions spent laughing at “dad” jokes gave rise to songs that blend personal stories from everyday life with fantasy and fictional characters, and nod to the healing power of nature threaded throughout.

The four members of Apifera have deep roots in their musical community: Yuvi releases electronic jazz as Rejoicer; Yonatan is frontman for post-rock/psych jazz band Geshem; Amir’s group Liquid Saloon blends afrobeat with jazz funk; and Nitai is best known for his solo piano records, with a 2023 album on ECM (spot the nod to the label in Keep The Outside Open’s tracklist). They call on their friend, trumpeter Avishai Cohen, for the album’s closing track, “Sera Sam”.

Happy Release Day! Composer-bassist ’s sophomore album NEONOMADIC is out today via la__reserve! It’s an introspective, richly textured LP featuring and special guest .

The term “neonomadic” entered Wiesenberg’s mind during early covid when, facing a spate of abruptly canceled tours, he had time to reflect and see how the idea applied to his own life. The bassist grew up in Tel Aviv, spent the past fifteen years in the United States, and now balances a young family with a career that often requires him to be on the road. Neonomadic, to Wiesenberg, signifies a feeling of rootlessness, one which he has experienced acutely at times in his own life. On his upcoming LP, the bassist looks inward, examining the idea across a series of cinematic, textured compositions.

“It’s a modern type of nomadic,” he explains. “You’re not really nomadic, but you’re always on the go, in airports, and you wonder where home is. I really relate to that. Feeling at home in New York, but feeling very foreign in the United States. Feeling at home in Tel Aviv, but feeling very foreign in Israel. There’s a dichotomy, or tension between the two places, micro and macro.”

Happy Release Day! releases the new album from the Johannesburg, South Africa based pianist, composer, and singer . The album, called ‚Rainbow Revisited‘, was created by Ntuli in collaboration with producer and percussionist Carlos Niño, and will be released today on LP, CD, and digitally, with cover art by renowned musician Shabaka Hutchings.

In 2019 Thandi Ntuli traveled to Los Angeles for the first time to perform at The Ford Theatre at a show presented by The Nonsemble. She met the LA-based Niño in person for the first time during preparations for that performance, and he invited her to do a session with him and engineer Andy Kravitz at Studio 4 West.

"A brave, stand-alone release that lays her talent bare, it’s a beautifully unreal entrancement you’ll find hard to stop listening to again and again." – Andy Cowan, MOJO (★★★★)

"An album of playful energy, alight with a sacred flame." – Gareth Thompson, All About Jazz

"Though her piano sketches some possibilities for embellishment, it’s predominantly an exposition of how cycling through the historic I:IV:V chords of South African music can draw listeners (I nearly said congregants) into an almost hypnotic engagement with a song’s spirituality." – Gwen Ansell, Mail & Guardian

"A remarkably exposing record that showcases Ntuli’s mastery of her instruments." – Ammar Kalia, The Guardian (Global Album of the Month)

new album'Great Expectations' is out today via & . Happiest of Release Days! With ‚Great Expectations‘ Julientassin aims to explore his own experiences with hope, joy and disillusions.

Last year, trumpet player Ron Miles was slated to be Julien’s special guest for a performance at Bozar, Brussels, where he would have completed the trio alongside Dré Pallemaerts and Nicolas Thys. Sadly, Miles passed away unexpectedly. Despite this tremendous loss, Tassin continued writing music for the project. He then invited American trumpet player Jason Palmer (Roy Hanes, Herbie Hancock, Jimmy Smith, Wynton Marsalis, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Ravi Coltrane, Mark Turner) to join the trio. This led to the formation of the Julien Tassin Quartet and the new album “Great Expectations”.

Much like in classical music, most of the pieces are composed in several movements, each reflecting a distinct mood and atmosphere. The surprising twists and turns in the music align with the overarching theme, where each songs tells a tale that effortlessly transitions between various grooves, while maintaining a cinematic undertone. However, there is ample space for improvisation and interaction, which has always been the band's strength in the studio and live. Tassin’s fascination with blues is apparent throughout the album. The outcome is an exhilarating combination of blues, jazz and rock.

Happy Release Day for the collaborative project led by Chicago producer/composer Will Miller ! Their second self-titled album is out via today. The new ‘Resavoir’ is a subtly radiant symphony interweaving modern-day soul-jazz with bedroom beats, synth serenades and twilight sonatas. It represents Miller’s most assured and refined work to date.

Imagined, instigated and produced by Miller, who ties the diverse sounds into an expansive, coherent whole, Resavoir features a wide and vibrant cast of collaborators, including Elton Aura, Whitney, Akenya, Matt Gold, Eddie Burns, Lane Beckstrom, Jeremy Cunningham, Irvin Pierce, Macie Stewart, Peter Manheim and more.

Rooted in the collaborative spirit of the early 2010s indie hip-hop scene, Miller cut loose from his training at Oberlin jazz conservatory, taking a compositional assignment to write a tune about a reservoir as his cue to explore a beats and RnB-inspired sound that could function as a literal reservoir of music to draw from. Running his trumpet through MIDI keyboards, experimenting with samplers, drum machines and synths, he began to build a sound that could seamlessly collaborate with MCs, vocalists and instrumentalists.

“With Resavoir, it’s been more about unlearning those stigmas and traumas of going through the very rigid system of learning music and coming back to making something that is going to make me feel good and reflects how I'm feeling in the moment,” Miller explains.

‚Melodies Of Light‘, the wonderful new album by Omri Mor & Yosef-Gutman Levitt is out today via Soul Song Records!

Omri Mor, a pianist and composer of Iraqi and Argentine heritage born in Be’er Sheva, Israel, and Yosef-Gutman Levitt, a bassist with deep roots in Hasidic and Southern African music, proudly present their collaborative album, "Melodies of Light" for Soul Song Records. This album showcases how remarkable creative breakthroughs can emerge when two distinct musical worlds converge.

After recording Levitt's "Soul Song" with renowned guitarist Lionel Loueke and seasoned drummer Ofri Nehemya, an extra day in the studio led to the birth of "Melodies of Light." The project began as a spontaneous duo set between Mor and Nehemya. Yosef-Gutman's role was pivotal in shaping the vast musical content into focused pieces, each narrating a unique story. "There are elements of African jazz that subtly intertwine with Omri's vibrant Middle Eastern rhythms," Levitt shares. "You can hear this sunny Southern African color on a number of tracks on the album. On several other tracks, I flow with Omri into the world of delicate Moroccan embellishments and Andalusian explorations."

The duo's synergy is evident throughout the album. "I feel a deep connection with Omri on every piece," Levitt emphasizes. "We're both contributing from our individual places in our hearts, yet our stories align." The album offers listeners a glimpse into the artists' shared headspace of Emunah, a concept from the Jewish tradition signifying an underlying belief in the inherent goodness of all things. "We're not presenting anything hyped or overly glossy," Levitt adds. "We play from a place of honesty and humility, hoping to transport and change listeners with our music."

Happiest of Release Days to , the project of Naarm/Melbourne-based singer-songwriter Tori Zietsch! Her anticipated second album 'I Get Into Trouble' is out today via !

'I Get Into Trouble' is a thematic expansion of Maple Glider’s 2021 debut LP 'To Enjoy is the Only Thing', going into greater and clearer detail, as she delves back into her Christian childhood while deconstructing her relationship to her body, alongside concepts of consent and shame. Throughout the album, she draws parallels between religion and sexuality in novelistic detail, before landing on a note of hopeful optimism, and embracing a new life of peacefulness. “This album feels more like an opening up because there are things I wasn't feeling ready to publicly share through songs, but now I finally feel ready,” she says.

Ultimately, 'I Get Into Trouble' is the sound of alchemized pain. In each song, Zietsch transmutes tribulation and confusion into clarity and deep insight. She combines the infectious folk-pop hooks of her debut with a sense of scale and scope. It’s tight in all the right places, freeform, wiley and compositionally eclectic, playful, and erratic in others. The album was recorded with the same small team as its predecessor - Tom Iansek ( #1 Dads, Big Scary, The Paper Kites) producing and mixing, and touring member Jim Rindfleish (Mildlife) on drums.

Ethan Philions’s Quartet record GNOSIS is out today via ! Happy Release Day!

Following up his debut album Meditations on Mingus (“Ingenious wrinkles along with dazzling and deeply realized performances from all” — Neil Tesser, Jazziz), bassist Ethan Philion pivots from a larger 10-piece unit to a spry, economical quartet on his brilliant sophomore release Gnosis. The spirit of Charles Mingus is present, most clearly in the quartet’s treatment of “What Love” (Mingus’ epic deconstruction of the Cole Porter standard “What Is This Thing Called Love”). But the focus on this new outing is original music, played with drive and ceaseless invention by alto saxophonist Greg Ward, trumpeter Russ Johnson and drummer Dana Hall joining the leader on bass.

“The title Gnosis refers to intangible knowledge, the things we learn from the qualities of an experience rather than explicit teaching,” explains Philion. “In religious settings the term often means a knowledge of a spiritual presence. For me, improvising with a group that is connected through deep listening and a shared mindset gives me the sense of touching something inQinite. Playing with Russ, Greg and Dana has given me a deeper knowledge of music, and of myself, in ways that transcend any specific guidance.”

Happy Release Day to Holy Hive – ‚Big Crown Vaults Vol. 3: Holy Hive‘ is out today via

Holy Hive released two full length albums and one EP in the short span of 3 years and then they decided to disband. In 2019, while recording their debut album world renown harpist was in NY. They got together in the studio on a whim and wound up recording their Harping EP in a few days. They followed that up with their 2020 full length debut Float Back To You which became an instant cult classic and defined their unique “Folk Soul” sound. Frontman Paul Spring’s tender falsetto and maverick guitar playing over Homer Steinweiss’ incomparable drumming and production proved to be a match made in heaven and created a sound that piqued the ears and charmed the hearts of all those who heard it. By the time they started recording their sophomore album COVID, commitments, and life started taking their toll on the band.

Spring and Steinweiss took their sound and pushed it way forward on their eponymous 2nd album keeping the anchor of their sound they established while exploring where else they could take it. Unbeknownst to the public by the time that record was released the band was done and had moved on to other things individually. While fans will undoubtedly not like this news, we will all have the timeless music they made while together, and, prolific they certainly were…

‚Big Crown Vaults Vol. 3: Holy Hive‘ digs into the treasure trove of unreleased recordings and pulls some that never saw their way to vinyl and in all honesty, this is not even half of what is in there. We’d like to thank Holy Hive for the gorgeous music they made together. We will continue to enjoy it forever.

Happy Release Day to Daniel Villarreal ( )! His new album ‚Lados B‘ with and is out today via !

‚Lados B‘ is a deep dive into the high-level spontaneous music made by Villarreal, Parker, and Butterss across those two days in 2020. Villarreal is heard leading the group through various rhythmic modes and structures for improvisation – flow as informed by the Latin funk of Fania Records as it is by the otherworldly humanity trance of Brain Records – while Parker and Butterss draw on their extensive experience playing free together (as heard on Parker's recently-released Mondays at the 𝘌𝘯𝘧𝘪𝘦𝘭𝘥 𝘛𝘦𝘯𝘯𝘪𝘴 𝘈𝘤𝘢𝘥𝘦𝘮𝘺 , and the LA side of Makaya McCraven's 2018 LP 𝘜𝘯𝘪𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘢𝘭 𝘉𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴) to build harmonic buoys for their spontaneous melodicism. The result is a beautifully vivid illustration of context, creativity, and collective composition from a particularly rich moment in history.

Happy Release Day! Jeremiah Chiu’s new album ‚In Electric Time‘ is out today via .

On June 29th, 2023, walked into the (VSM) in Highland Park, Los Angeles, with no plan more specific than “let’s fire this stuff up and see what happens.” Exploring the VSM’s vast collection of classic, rare and staple synthesizers, he would sequence, trigger, and layer the machines together with help from VSM founder/curator Lance Hill.

The resulting album – ‚In Electric Time’ was recorded in just two days, and edited to completion in the two days following. It was captured fully analog by engineer , who contributes performances on a few tracks himself. Cooper Crain (of ) makes an appearance as well; but ultimately the collection is an intuitive expression of organic electronic music conceptualized and created in-context by Chiu alone, as he calls on a lifetime of work in sound synthesis to paint a fulgent, refreshingly undercut sequence of cinematic sketches and in-process themes. In some ways, In Electric Time reflects the directness of Raymond Scott’s electronic studio recordings, and in others, it conjures the in-the-moment magic of Harmonia.

Javier Jiménez Rolo surprises with ‚Saint Malo‘, an absolutely unexpected first album. The soundtrack of a journey that didn’t exist but feels powerful and exciting. The album will be out December 1 via .

Saint Malo is the artistic name and title of the debut album by Javier Jiménez Rolo, a classically trained multi-instrumentalist who has collaborated with for several years.

Javier has chosen the name of this French city to name a project with a similar evocative quality that explores the intersections of neoclassicism, folk, ambient and electronic textures.

The album is a captivating instrumental tale of serene emotion made up of twelve postcards whose introduction is ‘Le pont roulant’, a title that pays homage to the old rolling bridge of Saint-Malo. Like a three-minute sunrise, the track reveals its delicate elements until it reaches a passionate fragility.

13/09/2023

Berlin-based Swedish bassist and producer returns with a new Koma Saxo album ‚Post Koma‘, out on , 10 November. The title Post Koma aptly describes the vibe of this one: The Koma Saxo sound continues its evolution, morphing into a holistic vision of jazz now and soon, where live instrumentation and repurposed sampling lose their boundaries.

‚Post Koma‘ is jazz to the fullest. That is, music that understands its past but always moves forward, and is never afraid of taking risks. Petter Eldh uses jazz as a starting point, not the end goal. This gives his music edge and mobility beyond what can be contained on one album. In a way, an album, then, becomes a snapshot of a creative process in constant flux and evolution.

Today, June 23, Fela Kuti's 1973 LP Gentleman will be released as a reissue on Partisan Records to mark the album's 50th anniversary.

1973’s Gentleman is the last of Fela’s early 1970s transitional albums - it was followed by 1974’s Alagbon Close, on which he brought all Afrobeat’s signature ingredients together.

On its title track, 1973’s Gentleman presents one of Fela’s most perfect lyrics, sung in call-and-response with the backing vocalists. “I no be gentleman at all,” Fela sings, and there’s plenty more.

As so often with Fela’s songs, “Gentleman” can be interpreted literally or as a metaphor concerning a wider issue. In this case, Fela’s topic is the colonialism-induced inferiority complex which led many in Africa’s new governing elites to reject African style, concepts of beauty and modes of behaviour in favour of European imports.
