Indiecon is a joint effort of independent magazine, book, art print and zine publishers from all over the world. The two-day publishing festival is based at Hamburg’s Oberhafen, a former freight yard now creative quarter right in the city centre. The Festival brings together more than 100 independent publishers from all over the world. Founded in 2014, the two-day festival has since developed into

a regular platform for an international scene of publishers – and become an annual destination for 4,000+ visitors from media, arts, book trade and the creative industries. We firmly believe that independent publishing is an important part of a free society. Every magazine, book, art print or zine offers a glimpse into another persons reality. Last year we came up with a new idea for Indiecon. Additional to the Expert Talks and open meeting formats like Breakfast Club we asked participating publishers to share their knowledge in a workshop or roundtable and we were kind of overwhelmed by the amount of proposals we got- so we decided to follow this path. This year, 11 Workshops, 9 Roundtables and 4 Guided Tours took place as part of the Community Program during the weekend with more than 200 participants in total 🤩 We hope all of you had a good time, that you learned something new and got to know each other even better.

Two weeks since , and we are still thinking about you 🙃 We hope you had some time to listen to the talks on our Main Stage. We did and we learned a bunch of things and got insights we are grateful for. For us, learning form other publishers is one of the major motivations to organize the festival for all those years.

We started Indiecon in 2014 out of curiosity to get insights in how other people publish, how publications change over the years, how publishers make a living, and what makes them do what they do. Because as you know, it’s always easier not to publish.

Indiecon wouldn’t be possible without our amazing team. We became self-taught professionals for everything needed to run a festival in the last years and we are thankful for the knowledge and expertise in all things publishing we can rely on. Thanks, team! Hugs also go out to all our helping hands during the weekend, you are the insurance that everything runs smoothly - or at least looks like it on the outside ;-)

A *hot* is history. We had a great time meeting you all and we are humbled by all the kind words and appreciation we got. More than 140 publishers from 60 cities in 30 countries traveled to Hamburg and it felt like a family meeting!

We hope to meet you all again in 2025. For Early 🦉s: Sep 5-7 is the date to save and if you like, you can already apply (Link in Bio). We will share some memories here in the next days. Digital Diasporas brings content to form through networks by communities for communities.

What was once solely analog dispersion has found a new medium in the last several decades: digital. Magazines are increasingly using their digital capacities to disperse diasporic communities and experiences through innovative cultural and financial means, connecting with each other and others in ways that was not possible before. What opportunities have risen from the digital diaspora? What challenges? What does it mean for independent publications and distribution? Driven by a love for conceptual publishing, each issue of London-based magazine Pilot () is an experiment that probes at the edges of what a magazine can be, creating a playful and innovative magazine that’s unlike any other. Dagny Tepper, editor-in-chief and creative director of Pilot, will tell the story of the magazine so far, and give an insight into how it totally reinvents itself each issue.

What does it mean to organize publishers for a political cause? That’s what Søren Ipland will talk about at Indiecon. He is not only the director and co-owner of the Danish newsletter-first news medium Føljeton () but also — surprisingly — a lobbyist. With his work for Nye Medier, he’s trying to reshape the regulatory environment in Denmark in favour of small publishers and independent journalism.

Let’s talk art! 🖼️

On the walls of Oberhafen, Solomiya () is going to show a selection of works made in Ukraine between 2021 and 2023 by the Kyiv-born photographer Alex Mashtaler (), that are featured in the magazine’s current issue. In the captivating world through Alex’s lens, a kaleidoscope of subjects unfolds, each narrating a unique story, and transforming public spaces and intimate relationships into a photographic world close to everyone’s heart. The pop-up-exhibition will be accompanied by an artist talk with Solomiya-Editor Ivanna Kozachenko and Alex Mashtaler.
