Exclusively For My Friends series - Now available as standalone LPs
When the world-renowned Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson came to Villingen in 1961, there was a mood of intense excitement all round. HansGeorg Brunner-Schwer, who would found MPS a few years later, had just set up the first version of his studio, equipped with the most advanced recording technology of the time, above the living-room in his villa. This was the bait used by the piano enthusiast to attract the famous pianist to the Black Forest where a number of excited guests were eagerly waiting. What followed became MPS history!

We are more than happy to announce that on the 30th of August the first two albums of the Oscar Peterson "Exclusively For My Friends" series will be available as standalone LPs, after so far being only available as part the boxset. Being recorded at the home-studio of MPS founder Hans Georg Brunner-Schwer, Peterson himself explained that it sounded to him as if he was still there at the grand piano, undisturbed by distracting nightclub sounds yet surrounded by a wonderfully intimate atmosphere. This was the beginning of a wonderful friendship and the pianist returned again and again in the following years to record more house concerts (as well as studio albums).
"Action" and "Girltalk", Vol. I & II from the "EFMF" series have been AAA-remastered by Grammy nominated mastering engineer Christoph Stickel and can be pre-ordered now. Vol. III & IV will be released on the 15th of November with Vol. V & VI following next year.

When you think about the great violinists in jazz you'll certainly come across the name Stéphane Grappelli. Being catapulted onto the world stage through his work with swing-guitarist Django Reinhardt, he manifested his standing as one of the best jazz violinists around.
So it should be no surprise that with this Album Of The Month we present you with one of Grappellis records for MPS: Violinspiration together with the Diz Disley Trio. On this 1975 album you can also hear Grappelli on the e-piano.

This month we had a good look into our vault and found a real special album: Enrico Rava's Katcharpari! Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava has been a force in the post-bop and avantegarde jazz world since the mid-1960’s when he played with soprano sax icon Steve Lacy. This 1973 MPS outing was Rava’s second album as a leader, and already displays the trumpeter as a player at the height of his creative powers. Enjoy!

Happy Birthday Monty Alexander! A true jazz legend is turning 80. Monty Alexander has been one of the most popular pianists in jazz for almost six decades. Early on, his prodigious technique and wide-ranging style garnered comparisons with the great Oscar Peterson. But there has always been another side to Alexander’s playing. Usually jazz grabs the upper hand, but on occasion he digs deep into his Jamaican roots.

Monty and MPS share a long history that started in 1971 and we're happy to still be in touch with one of the most talented and buoyant persons. Here's to many more years of your joyful swinging!

Another month, another album! In June we celebrate one of the greatest pianists of his generation: Monty Alexander! Not only is it his birthday this month but it's a special one too. Celebrating 80 years on the 6th of June we want you to join in on the party with a fantastic album. "Here Comes The Sun" was recorded in New York but manages to carry a Jamaican vibe over to the Big Apple. Still going strong to this day and with many more years to come it's always a blast when Monty takes his audience on a musical journey.

Today we sing "Happy Birthday" to one of the most outstanding German pianists and composers as Joachim Kühn turned 80 today! Kühn has been a force on the international jazz scene for more than half a century. Trained as a classical pianist, Kühn migrated to jazz, playing fusion with Alphonse Mouzon, free jazz with Ornette Coleman, and modern jazz in his iconic group with bassist JF Jenny-Clarke and drummer Daniel Humair. In 2018, Joachim and his brother Rolf Kühn were awarded the German Jazz Trophy for their lifetime achievements. Stephan Lamby produced a documentary about the life of the two brother that was released in 2019.
We raise our hat to and Joachim and wish him all the best on this special day.

To celebrate this special occasion, we created a playlist with some of the fine tunes Joachim recorded on MPS. Find the playlist here: https://MPS.lnk.to/JoachimKuehnFA

Originally released in 2001, "Life Enigma" by Jean Luc Ponty was a modern masterpiece back 23 years ago. If you listen to the music now, you could still say the same, nobody would suspect the music to be almost a quarter century old.

Even better so that MPS is bringing back this special album! Including a brand new artwork, as well as new liner notes by Jean Luc Ponty himself.

Today also marks the release of the first single "The Infinite Human Caravan", a perfect example for the pioneering mind of Ponty and his band.

Have you ever seen a bird play the trombone or maybe a trombone play a bird? One way or another, nobody does it like Albert Mangelsdorff on "Trombirds". With his breathtaking skills, this solo performance stands out from his other albums. With the use of multiphonics, playing one tone and singing another, thereby creating chords, he is able to accompany himself and create a unique album that is unrivalled in it's own way.

It's time for our album of the month: in February we bring you some bebop from one of the genre's greats - Barry Harris. The 1975 album "Vicisstudes" showcases his incredible skill and virtuosity on the piano. On this album Harris, who was famous for his playing and teaching alike, swings together with George Duvivier on bass and Leroy Williams on drums. The trio plays hand-in glove on 6 Harris compositions, two bop classics, and one standard.
