Coming soon: APF 2024
In September, the APF show will be held in Alcester, near Birmingham. The APF is an outdoor trade show for forestry, arboriculture, firewood, lumber yards and (agricultural) fencing that attracts about 300 exhibitors and 25,000 visitors every two years. All exhibition stands that have anything to do with fencing are grouped together in the Fencing Village.
“Since we introduced the Fencing Village idea at the 2018 APF Show, it has become an increasingly popular feature,” says Ian Millward of the organisation. “Fences are an important feature in forests and on estates, and we received feedback that the agricultural fencing industry in the UK did not really have its own show. The idea seemed to fit perfectly within the APF show, so the concept of the APF Fencing Village was born and it’s now ‘a show within a show’.”

Neat Gates releases range of plug-and-play swing gates
Neat Gates, an aluminium gate manufacturer from Dublin, now offers a plug-and-play version of all models of its swing gates. For this new option, named Fusion Gate, each gate is pre-installed on a steel frame.
“Neat Gates is a company in the Electro Automation Group,” Director and general manager Phil Keane says. “Electro Automation, is a company that has been installing gates for over 40 years, with branches not only in Ireland but also in Birmingham, in the UK and Erfurt in Germany. Three years ago Neat started manufacturing designer aluminium gates. We started off with a focus on the end market, as that was the market we were familiar with. Since the start of this year we’ve also focused  on supplying to fencing and gate installation companies. Since finding and recruiting suitable staff is a major challenge industry wide, we decided to make the gate installation experience quick and easy and ‘plug and play’ if possible. That’s why we developed the Fusion Gate.”

GroJa erweitert sein Zaunprogramm
Groen und Janssen, ein Zaunhersteller aus dem ostfriesischen Südbrookmerland, erweitert sein Zaunprogramm. In der Serie BasicLine gibt es jetzt extra schmale Füllprofile aus Kunststoff und mit Zierleisten, die Fertigzaunelemente sind nun auch für den Vorgarten erhältlich, und die Serien Solid Rhombus sowie Premo haben zusätzliche Farben und Ausführungen erhalten.
“Wir schauen kontinuierlich, wie wir unser Programm an die neuesten Trends und das Feedback unserer Kunden anpassen können,” sagt der zuständige Geschäftsführer Adonis Kabashi. “Daran arbeiten wir das ganze Jahr. Jedes Mal zur neuen Saison bringen wir dann alle Neuheiten auf den Markt.”

Redcinha Delclo lance un kit occultant à installation rapide
3Bimport, fabricant de clôtures français situé à Marcoing, à 60 kilomètres de Lille, et société à l’origine des marques Redcinha et Delclo, lance un nouveau kit avec des lamelles occultantes pour les treillis en fils. Ce kit s’appelle Composite Ultimate et se distingue par une installation rapide.
« En 2012, nous avons été les premiers à proposer des lamelles occultantes en bois composite, » explique Hervé Delmarre, le directeur. « Depuis, le marché s’est énormément développé, les lamelles sont extrêmement populaires auprès des clients finaux. Mais les professionnels de la clôture n’en sont pas tous satisfaits car l’installation avec les systèmes existants sur le marché prend beaucoup de temps. Cela fait grimper le prix de l’assemblage. C’est pourquoi nous avons voulu mettre sur le marché un kit très rapide à installer. »

Heras übernimmt BA-KRO
Heras, ein Zaunhersteller mit Hauptsitz im niederländischen Oirschot, hat BA-KRO übernommen, einen Installateur von Hochsicherheitssystemen für kritische Infrastrukturen aus Berlin. Die Übernahme ist das Ergebnis einer bereits bestehenden langjährigen Partnerschaft. BA-KRO, das seit 1997 besteht, ist ein Anbieter von Hochsicherheitssystemen für den Objektschutz. Die Firma liefert, installiert und wartet Systeme für die Sicherheit von Flughäfen, Gefängnissen und Botschaften in ganz Deutschland.

A day in the life of a fencing installer
It’s Monday morning. You wake up in a good mood, full of good memories from the day before. It started with a lovely long lie-in. Then you took your young son to an amusement park. Later on you had a barbecue with a few friends you hadn’t seen in months, with a couple of beers and a lot of laughs, and to top it all off, you and your girlfriend had great s*x that night. You feel as if you could take on the world; it’s going to be a fantastic day.
At least, that’s what you think.
Because then the first workday of the fencing week begins. The phone rings even before you’ve got out of bed. It’s one of your installers, who says he’s on-site for a project and has green mesh panels rather than black ones. It had been unavoidable: someone had put the green panels in the spot where the black ones always go, and in the first light of day it was impossible to tell the difference. He can make a start on digging the holes, but if you could organise ‘someone’ to bring the good panels over...?

AOS bringt Vidual-Steckzäune auf den Markt
AOS-Stahl, Zaunhersteller aus Wetter am südlichen Rand des Ruhrgebiets, bringt eine eigene Serie von Steckzäunen auf den Markt. Sie heißt Vidual und basiert auf einem Pfostentyp, in den Aluminium-, Holz-Kunststoff-Verbundstoff und Glasfüllungen montiert werden können. Die Serie unterscheidet sich von anderen Systemen auf dem Markt durch eine intelligente Pfostenkappe, die die Füllung festdrückt, und durch eine runde Nut, die auch bei Zwischenpfosten Ecken ermöglicht.
“Steckzäune sind die Zukunft,” sagt AOS-Gründer und Geschäftsführer Oliver Schake. “Der Doppelstab wird immer bleiben, aber wenn Endkunden heute über einen Sichtschutzzaun sprechen, meinen sie nicht mehr Matten mit eingewebtem Kunststoff. Sie möchten einen Zaun aus hochwertigem Material, der schön aussieht. Deshalb bringen wir jetzt unsere eigene Reihe von Steckzäunen auf den Markt.”

Berner erweitert Programm mit Schiebetor ST Live
Berner Torantriebe, ein Antriebs- und Torhersteller aus dem süddeutschen Rottenburg am Neckar, etwas unterhalb von Stuttgart, erweitert sein Programm um eine ökonomische Version des bisher als Supeero bekannten Schiebetors.
“Mit dem neuen ST Live können wir auf dem Privatmarkt für Schiebetore gut mithalten,” sagt Geschäftsführer Frank Kiefer. “Auch im Vergleich zu internationalen Wettbewerbern. Dabei machen wir so wenig Zugeständnisse bei der Qualität wie möglich, die günstigeren Preise ermöglichen wir durch ein schlankeres Design.”

Gardencenter T wordt Guardex
De Belgische hekwerkgroothandel Gardencenter T uit Genk, bij Hasselt, heeft een nieuwe naam. Het bedrijf opende begin april een nieuwe showroom en vierde haar 35-jarig bestaan. Er werd van de gelegenheid gebruik gemaakt om het bedrijf om te dopen naar iets kort en krachtigs: Guardex.
“Als specialist in hekwerk en poorten dekt de naam Gardencenter T de lading niet meer,” zegt oprichter en eigenaar Didier Meertens. “Ons 35-jarig bestaan was het uitgelezen moment voor een rebranding. We zijn op zoek gegaan naar iets dat stoer en zelfverzekerd is. Guardex komt van guard en exterior, we beschermen de buitenruimte. Dit vertaalt niet alleen perfect wie we zijn als bedrijf, maar ook waar we voor staan.”

Legi erweitert R fit-System mit Eckpfosten
Der deutsche Zaunhersteller Legi hat in diesem Frühjahr einen Eckpfosten für sein R fit System auf den Markt gebracht. Damit können ab jetzt stabilere und optisch schönere Ecken gebildet werden. Zusätzlich ist das System jetzt für kleine Flächen optimiert und macht T-Verbindungen möglich.
“Das Legi R-System ist das einzige System auf dem Markt, das aufgrund der starken Verbindung der überlappenden Gittermatten keine Eckpfosten benötigt,” sagt Mirja Lechtenböhmer, Tochter des Inhabers Norbert Lechtenböhmer und verantwortlich für die Unternehmensentwicklung. “Deshalb sind die Kunden bisher immer gut mit den speziellen Eckverbindern des Systems zurechtgekommen. Das wird auch in Zukunft der Fall sein. Trotzdem gab es manchmal den Wunsch nach einem Eckpfosten, weil fast alle anderen Systeme auf dem Markt Eckpfosten haben, oder – und das war für uns das wichtigste Argument – weil es in bestimmten Fällen optisch schöner und sicherer ist. Deshalb haben wir jetzt, unter dem Motto ‘Design trifft Funktion’ auch einen Eckpfosten für das R fit-System entwickelt.”

PPG expands CityProtector bollard series
Perimeter Protection Group, a Salzkotten-based manufacturer of speed gates, bollards and road blockers, is expanding its CityProtector bollard series. With two outdoor tables and with illuminated sleeves, the company aims to set new standards to meet the changing demands of urban security.
“We launched the CityProtector series two years ago with the idea of departing from the beaten – and old-fashioned – path in terms of design and use of bollards,” says product manager Yvonne Kolatschek. “The demand for bollards as protection against vehicular attacks has been rising sharply for years, but with it also rises the resistance to seeing a ‘bollard-secured’ cityscape. The CityProtector is a bollard that can be combined with city furniture and thus looks less like a bollard. Architects and city planners now have even more choice with the new modules.”

Farfisa launches new version of Mycom GSM system
Italian intercom manufacturer Farfisa, from Osimo near Ancona, launches a new version of its GSM System. The new Mycom is compatible with the Alba range. It enables owners to speak to visitors and grant them access wireless, via a phone call.
The Mycom system consists of a doorbell with speaker. There’s a slot for a 4G SIM card, the complete system works just with this module and a power supply, without any further cables. When a visitor rings the doorbell, the module calls four different phone numbers one by one until it gets an answer. The person who answers the call is able to talk to the visitor and let them in.

Betafence extends its guarantee
Belgian company Betafence is extending the guarantees it offers. Various products now have a longer warranty period, or are suitable for installation closer to the sea than they were previously. Some products feature an adapted surface treatment, while Betafence has extended the warranty period of others based on past experience.
“For example, last summer we made changes to the powder coating on the Nylofor 3D mesh panels,” product manager Kris Van Waes says. “Now the pre-galvanised wires are given an epoxy coating first. After that they go through the spray cabin and the oven again to be coated with polyester powder. The name we’ve given to the panels with that double coating is Nylofor 3D Plus. We already had a 10-year warranty on the standard 3D panels, when installed at least 3 kilometres from the coast. The 3D Plus panels come with a 5-year warranty in the zone that’s 1 to 3 kilometres from the coast.”

Calculate and get rich
In a column in the front of this issue, we wrote that an extra euro or two in your calculation can sometimes mean the difference between rich and poor. Being curious types, we started asking around a bit on Facebook about how people in the industry make their calculations. And what did we find? A lot of installers don’t do calculations at all. That is, they do calculate the amount of materials they’ll need, but then they slap a percentage on top of that that’s more or less based on gut feeling... and is sometimes completely arbitrary. The same goes for the installation charge.
We have to say that we don’t have anything against gut feelings. Your gut feeling is your subconscious whispering to you, and the subconscious part of your brain is the part that stores all your past experiences. So your gut feeling ensures that you’ll always earn enough to survive, even if it’s sometimes only barely.

Can installing fences make you rich?
If you ask a fencing installer why he got into the business, you’ll get all sorts of different answers. Usually it will be something like, “I wanted to work outdoors,” “I like working with heavy-duty tools,” or “I really like building things that everyone’s going to see for decades to come”. And sometimes we hear, “I was too stupid to do anything else,” and then we lose it immediately, because you really do need to be smart and skilled to install fences. Smarter than, for example, errr, umm… no, we’re not sure either.
Anyway, it’s not often that you hear an answer like: “Because I want to be rich.” And if you did get that answer, you’d probably laugh at the installer, because no one in their right mind associates installing fences with getting rich.
Coincidentally, the other day we came across a little chart on the big wide internet, showing how rich you have to be to make it into the top 1 per cent of any given country’s population. Then we thought: Could you actually get rich putting up fences, if you wanted to?
The chart doesn’t list every European country, but in France, Germany and Great Britain the level is slightly above 3 million American dollars, so just for fun let’s take 3 million euros and see how many metres you’d have to install for that.

These are the kids (8 & 6) of Jochen Eckenweber from Eckenweber Zaunbau in Bavaria, who read Fencing Times every Sunday, mostly at 7am in the morning, to build up wide knowledge about fencing and gates, so they’ll be prepared to take over the company smoothly, later. Good job, kids. 👍🏻

AOS organisiert Hausmesse in Olpe
AOS-Stahl, ein Zaunhersteller aus Wetter am südlichen Rand des Ruhrgebiets, begrüßte am ersten Märzwochenende rund 800 Kunden und Interessierte auf seinem Vertriebsgelände in Olpe, an der Autobahn von Dortmund nach Frankfurt, auf einer Hausmesse.
“Wir sprühen hier immer vor Ideen und nehmen jedes Jahr mehrere Produkte in unser Programm auf,” sagt Gründer und Geschäftsführer Oliver Schake. “In den Jahren, in denen die Perimeter Protection in Nürnberg stattfindet, können wir diese Neuheiten dort vorstellen, in den dazwischen liegenden Jahren versuchen wir daher immer, selbst eine Veranstaltung zu organisieren.”

Plast-Met adds to range
Polish fencing manufacturer Plast-Met, from Trzebnica near Wroclaw, is expanding its range. In addition to steel fencing, the company’s portfolio now includes aluminium fencing styles, standardised design elements, and tailor-made design.
“Our development team never stops,” export manager Maciej Radota says. “We have a separate design department that keeps on top of the latest trends, then works with the technicians to develop the models for each new season. This year’s focus is on aluminium.”

Often you are too scared
“What, wood? Do you want a fence made of wood? Do I look like a carpenter? We do not have wooden fences here, go somewhere else. Bye.” It is an answer a customer can get just like that when walking into an arbitrary fencing company. And not just for wooden fencing. “Agricultural or wildlife fencing is rotten stuff to put up and the margins are low, we don’t get involved with that,” we have heard many times here at the editorial office. As well as: “detection fencing gives far too many false alarms, it will only cause trouble,” and “ornamental fencing we don’t do either, because people who order ornamental fencing whine about every scratch.”
