There are many types of bone fractures, including:
Greenstick: An incomplete fracture where the bone only cracks on one side, usually in children
Transverse: A break that runs straight across the bone
Spiral: A break that spirals around the bone
Oblique: A break that runs diagonally across the bone
Compression: The bone is crushed, causing it to be wider or flatter
Comminuted: The bone breaks into three or more pieces
Segmental: The bone is fractured in two places, creating a "floating" piece of bone
Hairline fracture: A stress fracture, often in the foot or lower leg
Avulsion fracture: A tendon is pulled free, wrenching out pieces of bone
Linear fracture: A simple fracture with a single fracture line that runs parallel to the bone's long axis
Impacted fracture: One bone fragment is driven into another
Fractures can also be named based on the bone affected, such as a scaphoid fracture in the wrist or a Colles' fracture in the forearm.
