Th swiss conductor Boris Brinkman brought to us the score and parts of an astonoshing Piano Trio by a completely unknown composer: Wilhelm Rohde (1856-1928). Nearly nothing can be found about Rohde and his music, but he seemed to have studied piano with Julius Röntgen, violin with Ferdinand David and composition with Ernst Friedrich Richter in Leipzig, that gave him astonoshing technique in composing as well for strings as for keys and makes the Piano Trio a demanding, but for each instrument customized piece. The work contains four movements in a classical form, but with a romantic and touching tone language.

Beneath Richard Strauss, Felix Weingartner and Gustav Mahler, Emil Nikolaus von Reznicek (1860-1945) was one of the most renowned and as well substantial composers of his time: even though he composed against the fashion.
In his youthful mind, he liked subtle musical jokes and sometimes even a light and pleasant style. He wrote five symphonys, operas as well as comic operas and even operettas - what made him wrongly the name of a 'light music composer'. Many of his works got destroyed by bomb attacks on Berlin; others could be found and republished in Beyond the Waves.
Nachtstück is a heavenly fantasy in a late romantic style, that as well exists in an orchestral version with solo violin (or cello). Also this version with piano gives the choice of a violin or a cello part. The orchestral version has been recorded with solo violin: https://open.spotify.com/track/4HE5xXJYdHeLzg8OeNsaIZ?si=iPYR4kflRseJb0tjlenfjw.

Viktor Kosenko weighs as one of the substancial composers of the USSR, founded a Slavic stlye, that includes characteristics of different countries. Born in St. Petersburg, Kosenko soon moved to Warsaw and studied piano with Michałowski. After finishing his studies, he moves to Ukraine, taught there, gave concerts and later got headmaster of the Kiev conservatory. He died early aged 42. Beneath romantic influences, that often hint to Chopin, he was interested in Scriabin and continued his weightlessness. The Poemes op. 5 rimind strongly to this Russian composer, who himself wrote Poemes for piano and later of course for orchestra. Of the originally three composed pieces, Kosenko decided to publish only two, the middle one is lost.

We just released some major works by the great composer Jean Louis Nicodé (1853-1919), who should be renowned as one of the leading German composers of the late 19th century. As pupil of Theodor Kullak and Friedrich Kiel he was well trained in all technical aspects and knew all details of form and harmony. He turned over from composer to conductor, where he prefered contemporary composers like Draeseke, Liszt and Strauss, and back again.
His two large scale cello sonatas belong to the finest works for this instrument of this time.

Moritz Moszkowski (1854-1925) was able handle big and small forms, his tenderness draws through his symphonies and operas as well as through his piano miniatures. In his early years he toured through Europe as renowned pianist and conductor; later he lost all his fortune in investments and settled in Paris, where he couldn't continue his career.
His short and lovely Serenata op. 15 continues the kind of character pieces, that was typical for the 19th century and was made known among others by Schumann and Grieg.

Louis Brassin (1840-1884) was a Belian pianist and composer, who studied with Moscheles and later taught at the Stern'sches Konservatorium and as professor at the conservatory in Brussels. He wrote two big piano concertos and several pieces for piano, but is known mostly for his various arrangement of the music by Richard Wagner.
Here there is an arrangement of the famous "Feuerzauber" (Fire Magic) from the Opera "Die Walküre" (The Valkyrie).

Before he dedicated himself being a composer, Pierre-Octave Ferroud studied chemistry and physics. His earliest works are dated on 1920, he was 20 years old then - only 17 years later he already died in a car accident.
In this short time span he became one of the leading composers in France and was an important supporter for contemporary music. His own music style, that he developed under the guidance of Florent Schmitt, can be compared the the Groupe des Six, foremost to Poulenc, but as well he took some elements of Hindemith.
In Beyond the Waves are already published the Cellosonata and the String Quartet. Now we printed the Trio à vent en Mi, a quite short piece in three movements, which is dedicated to Romanian composer FIlip Lazar (whose piano sonata op. 15 is reprinted as well in Beyond the Waves; after this publication it was played several times).

Today we'd like to introduce to you a completely unknown composer: Max Franke. It seems quite impossible to find any information about this composer; not even his birth-and-death dates. We found the ten charming miniatures "In the forest" in a big collection with various music of Schumann, Liszt, Moszkowski and Grieg and wondered, what they are. They are written in a delightful romantic style full of beautifulness and contemplativeness. One could compare them to some of Schumann's collections like the "Album für die Jugend" or to Grieg's Lyric Pieces. But the English subtitles could suggest the assumption, that those pieces have been printed in the early 20th century - we'd estimate them to be published in the 1920s or 30s.
A real treasure for explorers!

Yesterday it was the birthday of Ukrainian composer Viktor Kosenko, we are celebrating this by publishing the first three volumes of his piano music including one of his major works: 11 Etudes in the form of old dances.
Kosenko weighs as one of the substancial composers of the USSR, founded a Slavic stlye, that includes characteristics of different countries. Especially the Polish style is strong in some of his works, especially of course the early Mazurkas. Beneath romantic influences, that often hint to Chopin, he was interested in Scriabin and continued his weightlessness.
Born in St. Petersburg, he soon moved to Warsaw and studied piano with Michałowski (his study on a Waltz by Chopin has been published in Beyond the Waves). After finishing his studies, he moves to Ukraine, taught there, gave several concerts and later got headmaster of the Kiev conservatory.
We only can imagine, what kind of incredible works he would have written, if he wouldn't have died so early, aged 42.

Emil Nikolaus von Reznicek (1860-1945) can be named as one of the most important colleagues of Richard Strauss, Felix Weingartner and Gustav Mahler. He always worked against his time, so he composed dissonant styles before anybody else did; and stopped this, when it got fashion. In his youthful mind, he liked subtle musical jokes and sometimes even a light and pleasant style. He wrote five symphonys, operas as well as comic operas and even operettas - what made him wrongly the name of a 'light music composer'.
In the Third Reich he had one of the most important positions beneath Strauss in the "Ständiger Rat für internationale Zusammenarbeit der Komponisten", where he managed to realize concerts even with jewish, jazzy or modern composers. Many of his works got destroyed by bomb attacks on Berlin.
His lively character can be shown in his Four Piano Pieces, published in Beyond the Waves. It starts with a Bourleske, then a Waltz and a Scherzino - and it ends with the Tantalus.

New release:
The German Composer Lutz Landwehr von Pragenau (born 1963), a student of Wilhelm Killmayer, expands the scoring for piano four hands by including the sound of a conga. Result is the piece Berührungen (Points of Contact), where one pianist plays with both hands on the piano, and the other one using as well the drum to underline the rhythmical strenght of the music.
The layout of this very first print of the piece is done by the composer and violinist Dan Turcanu, whose music is published as well in the Repertoire Explorer and in Beyond the Waves.
