"! I can't help but think about when I get sick (regarding the last track). About the whole process of how I feel... certain things in motion (in my body) when I'm actually getting sick (in one way or another). The first stage of catching a cold, being strangely... pleasant? Maybe your body feels slightly heavier, but you feel more relaxed nonetheless! And then it just... creeps up on you. Getting worse and worse, like the whole body is going through a change. And that is how this latest M.B. album feels and sounds like! Although it makes you feel utterly unpleasant, you will (still) want to return for more. The experience hidden within this recording is quite amazing! Constant and repeating listening is recommendable! !"

"Aalfang Mit Pferdekopf and Emerge are two musicians from Germany, with some previous works on various labels (Drone Records or Verato Project for Emerge).
This quite surrealistic & surprising pieces was created in three steps : first, Aalfang Mit Pferdekopf has created what he calls himself "a sound sculture" with various intruments like melodica, kalimba or spring drum. Then Emerge reworked it, adding his dark-ambient sounds and low rumblings he's known for. The final mix was done by Aalfang Mit Pferdekopf.

The work with the Boxes is progressing. Covers have been glued on the outside, cards (with Art by Mirko Uhlig) have been printed, wooden eggs and insides have been sprayed. The official release date is May 3rd, and they will be shipped one week later. I am looking forward to seeing the finished results and to having this great album join the discography of Grubenwehr releases.

A new review by Frans De Waard / Vital Weekly for our Tape release by Materialeinschüchterung:

"I had to look up what Materialeinsch​ü​chterung means, ‘Material intimidation’, as it happens, and it’s a duo of Torstn (not Torsten, it seems) Kauke and Oliver Kaib, who recorded the 13 pieces between 2014 and 2021. The labels describe these ‘industrial and kraut improvisations’, which I think covers it. The two play guitar and drums, and maybe the music has some electronic component. Throughout (but not exclusively), they take their time for their improvisations, seven to fifteen minutes, even when a few are shorter than this. As I was reading the D-Generation magazine this week, which, at times, read like a Genesis P-Orridge fan club magazine, someone mentioned that Genesis didn’t like laptop concerts and was into playing Hawkind, Syd Barrett, 13th Floor Elevators and Can type of music, which reminded me of how the earliest Throbbing Gristle used more guitar sounds. Playing the Materialeinsch​ü​chterung cassette is further evidence that some of the old school (and I mean very old school) industrial sound is indeed close to that psychedelic, grinding, Krauty sound, except this duo doesn’t use the same motorik beats; only occasionally there is a trace of such a thing (in ‘Superlovespreader’ for instance). It’s all a bit loosely played, which works fine. It’s also quite long and a bit repetitive, idea-wise, but as I wasn’t doing anything else and enjoyed being otherwise lazy, this was a fine soundtrack for such a day. (FdW)"

Lärmschutz I Gintas K - Split

Here, we have the fourth split cassette on the combined recycled forces of two German labels, Attenuation Circuit and Grubenwehr Freiburg. It’s been a while since I last heard something from the Dutch group Lärmschutz, who, these days, seem to be reduced to one musician, Rutger van Driel. He plays trombone, electronics and bass, and on the four ten-minute parts of ‘Patient’, he adds “psychiatry-themed spoken word footage”. While the music of Lärmschutz is usually very free, jazzy, noisy, anarchic punk music, it is also, at times, something else. One such difference in these four pieces is that Van Driel seems to be layering the various sounds he produced, probably unable to play all these instruments simultaneously. Layering means mixing, and mixing means, at least in my opinion, and I am sure not everybody agrees, composing. The musician can alter the context, the order, and the texture of the sounds, making this quite different. It’s easy to see the music as something from the world of improvised music, with many of the trombone parts played relatively freely. Still, because there are several per track, along with a similar set of various layers of improvised electronics, coupled with the cut-ups of voices, this goes beyond traditional improvised music. At times, the electronics prevail, and the music has a rather noisy character without becoming too much of a noise attack. It is an excellent release, and if this is a new direction for Lärmschutz, I am all curious to hear what comes next.

On the other side, the well-known Lithuanian composer Gintas Kraptavicius, the ‘wet’ side of the tape, as he uses sounds of water sources, “or rather, liquidness or fluidity, and these qualities surface in both the drippy, squeaky, splishy-splashy timbres as well as the free-flowing rhythms (and stoppages) of the music”. Gintas is a laptop musician, maybe one of the last standing these days, and uses various bits and bobs of software for real-time sound transformation. Whereas Lärmschutz uses forty minutes, Gintas K only about half of that, and he has a rather traditional approach to laptop music, bleeping away with lots of small glissandi and other transformations. Not bad and quite entertaining, but also, perhaps, not too different from some of his other work.

Grubenwehr Freiburg has been amassing an impressive array of releases by highly regarded artists from the noise/industrial scene in a rather short time. This latest addition to their roster, by Italian genre pioneer M.B. (aka Maurizio Bianchi), comes as a co-release with attenuation circuit. The 75-minute CD is accompanied by an oversized 7” artwork insert, which neatly showcases the fact that M.B. is not only a prolific sound artist, but also has something to offer in the visual domain.
The three long tracks „Bacillus“, „Metrial“, and „Endopathogen“, as well as the sound sources „infectronics, muconoises, microbdrones“ point to the concerns with physical defects and decay present in M.B.'s works since its very early stages – the heritage of old school industrial's rather nihilistic outlook. Musically, M.B. makes the most of the underlying concept of inevitability: ambient loops overlap and circulate, pumping sound into the listener's ear like a heart pumps blood into organs, but gradually they slow down and die away. And from track to track the sound textures become harsher and more uncomfortable – not in a harsh noise kind of way, but in a more subliminal manner. Yet somehow the relentless pulsing – as long as it lasts – of the music is strangely comforting: as long as you can still hear these sounds, you are not dead yet.
