Hamburg-based, Cameroonian singer-songwriter and bassist Jeano Elong just released his forward-thinking debut full-length "Jâbeâ". Out now on the newly founded Not OK Records imprint!

Recorded in Gaier's Art Blakey Studio with Twickel and Gaier at the controls, "Jâbeâ" sees Elong put his musical talents on full display. A "bastard" (just quoting the press release here) blend of Cameroonian and African styles (such as Makossa, Bikutsi or Hilife) with two of Hamburg's finest pushing the envelope on production, this 11-track discourse has Elong narrating the affair in his native Bakaka, with just two songs presented in English and French respectively. "Jâbeâ" in our minds deserves way more attention to detail than we could provide in this brief recap of ours, with each track having its very own backstory steeped in meaning and thoroughly premeditated. But let us just say this: Listening to this album and honing in on the masterful details as well as the versatile delivery reflects an 'art de vivre' as well as a 'joie de vivre' that is easily savoured, but audibly refrains from sugarcoating the many faces of injustice. 💪🏾

Rio De Janeiro's Dora Morelenbaum (of Bala Desejo fame) unveils her soaring debut solo album "Pique" on Mr Bongo, co-produced by fellow Brazilian new wave star Ana Frango Elétrico. 🌹

"Pique" brings us eleven tracks to lather yourself in, connecting past and present while interweaving styles and delivering a soothingly atmospheric, pensive yet equally upbeat opus to indulge in. "Touching on disco, MPB, soul, R&B and jazz, the album is enriched with an indie pop aesthetic," and overall production wizardry courtesy of the aforementioned Ana Frango Elétrico, but make no mistake, Dora Morelenbaum was "involved [...] from the ground up, from the songwriting, singing, arrangement and production to booking the studio time and sourcing the artwork designer."

Geneva's Orchestre Tout Puissant Marcel Duchamp unveils positively rambunctious album number six on Bongo Joe Records, offering a "dynamic exploration" of "contemporary anxieties" and blending all kinds of styles to make for an "exuberant listening experience"! 🐎

Recorded over the course of ten days in a studio on the outskirts of Paris, the orchestra quite literally joined forces to bring another musical vision to fruition, creating what might be described as organised chaos. But the roots go deeper and so do the intricately spontaneous arrangements, verging on the naive yet revealing soaring musicality, complex simplicity and sheer audacity.

He was a key figure of the anti-apartheid movement and member of the South African diaspora, who lived in exile and ultimately chronicled the movement in his artistic work, a powerful musical voice from abroad.

Palestinian-American violinist Akram Abdulfattah Official releases his new studio album "Abu Kenda" on Levantine Music Group amidst the wonder of newfound fatherhood and the devastation of an ongoing war. 🎻🕊️

This new work, however, is in no way lugubrious or marred by self-pity. Blending "elements of traditional Palestinian and Arab Classical music" with "sonic influences from [...] Jazz, Rock and Funk," Abdulfattah's latest oeuvre takes a more far-reaching approach, "carrying [within] it a message of peace and a call for freedom and justice [...] whilst upholding the highest artistic and humanitarian values." Facilitated by his virtuosic playing, electronic accentuation and an inherently innovative spirit, "Abu Kenda" translates to a plethora of emotions and contrasting colours, at times ominous and disheartening, at times brimming with hope and positivity.

Oslo-based afro-funk seven-piece Flammer Dance Band returns with a blazing new six-track LP of incendiary groovers 🔥🔥🔥 out now on Lyskestrekk Records ... Vinyl version coming this Friday!

"Gynger" brings us another six funk-laden tracks by the seven-piece recorded in a "hot and sweaty soul shack" over the course of five days. The new longplayer perfectly "captures the raw, dynamic spirit of [the outfit's] well-oiled, psychedelic funk machine," drawing from a yet-to-be-revealed, seemingly infinite source of energy and ingenuity. Marked by infectious spontaneity, each composition kicks off on a certified funky lick and then evolves down a narrow winding road of inherent musical intuition and able improvisation: living on the edge, but miraculously staying the course.

Listen to a new episode of 'African Presence' on WeltBeat / Globalwize, feauring a special 2-hour presentation of "African American Political Songs"💪🏾from the Civil Rights movement to Black Lives Matter selected by Kathrin Thomas, MA student of American Studies at the University of Mainz.

"I was able to visit the United States for the first time in 2023 as part of the American Studies Summer School 'The American South,' which focused on the Civil Rights Movement and the music of the US American South. This trip gave me helpful insights into the topics we covered in class and inspired me to do this show," Thomas explains. "Furthermore, as the elections in the United States are coming up, this topic seems even more fitting. The songs here remind the audience of the hardships African Americans had to go through, the struggles they are still facing, but also that there is hope. It’s time to move forward and as Kamala Harris says: 'We are not going back!'"

Among the artists you will hear in this wonderful presentation are the Black Eyed Peas feat. The World, singer-songwriter and transgender rights activist Shea Diamond, influential soul artist Sam Cooke, the one-and-only Nina Simone, actor Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino, singer/songwriter/composer Gabriella Sarmiento Wilson aka HER Music, rappers DaBaby, Roddy Ricch and Joey Badass, R&B/pop icon Usher with rap great NAS and German singer-songwriter Bibi Bourelly, the legendary Harry Belafonte, Beyoncé feat. Kendrick Lamar (with the song that is the current anthem of Kamala Harris' presidential campaign), actress and singer Keke Palmer, 2Pac feat. Talent, T.I. feat. Skylar Grey, soul icon Marvin Gaye, Logic feat. Alessia Cara & Khalid, country music singer and songwriter Kane Brown, Trinidadian-born rapper, singer and songwriter Nicki Minaj, all-woman African-American a ca****la ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock, Chicago's very own Common with John Legend, the multi-talented Janelle Monáe and who else but the 'King of Pop' himself, Michael Jackson.

Just what we needed during this transition from summer to fall and in light of the current state of affairs on this planet of ours: Bassist Yosef Gutman Levitt & guitarist Itay Sher take a modern, chamber orchestral approach to traditional Hasidic Jewish 'nigunim' (liturgical melodies) on new album "UNITY". 🙌🏽

Arranged by Levitt's longtime musical partner Gilad Ronen, the two protagonists enter into something akin to "an elevated spiritual conversation," brought to full fruition by the accompanying chamber orchestra, including Ronen on reeds and David Giat on drums. Intimate, contemplative, touching are just some of the words that do these breathtaking recordings justice, compositions that are way more intricate than one might at first assume. The ensemble even recorded a full performance video before a spectacular natural backdrop, which is equally spellbinding.

Belgium's Radio Martiko collective and reissue imprint unearths a 24-track collection of 1950s/'60s big band recordings by legendary Colombian arranger/composer Edmundo Arias. 🍹

The 24 tracks on this equally spirited collection were all recorded during the 1950s and '60s, a period that many say was "the absolute highlight of his career" while the title "Guepa Je!" is Colombian slang and "often used in cumbia to express joy or to celebrate," as in 'yeah', 'let's go' or ‘groovy'. Besides the brilliant cover artwork, this release is a veritable party starter, one to get the dancefloor juices flowing and ‘la gente’ on their feet.

Listen to an 'African Presence' special tribute show to the late and great Malian kora master Toumani Diabaté, presented by WeltBeat / Globalwize host and selector Jean Trouillet and Hauke Dorsch of the Archiv für die Musik Afrikas Mainz (AMA). 🌍

The "Globalwize Radioshow #457" shares a two-hour selection of Diabaté's unparalleled playing as well as choice collaborations with other masters of their craft. This fills an unfortunate gap, seeing as no major German media outlet picked up on Diabaté's death nor on his life's work. Among the artists included you will find names such as Kelitigui Diabaté, Basekou Kouyaté, Sidike Diabaté, Djelimadi Sissoko, Danny Thompson, José Soto, Diabaté's Symmetric Orchestra, Hans Lüdemann, Taj Mahal, Ali Farka Touré, Youssou N'Dour, Jarabi and Mamadou Manda Keita.
