dublab was founded in Los Angeles in 1999, and has been broadcasting live eversince. Our idea is as simple as beautiful: To bring a range of interesting music that is often overlooked to dedicated listeners and readers across the globe. dublab.de is the german leg of the mothership from Los Angeles, and has been launched in April 2015 to highlight the variety of quality music coming from and happening in Germany, past, present and future.

With the aim of bringing non-European perspectives into dialogue with the European public, the Academy of the Arts of the World regularly welcomes artists-in-residence from all over the world to Cologne. As part of a scholarship, they are given the opportunity to encounter the regional art and creative scene and find inspiration for their own projects. The artists-in-residence present their work with their own events in the program of the Academy of the Arts of the World.

Each new residency begins with a convivial evening entitled "Meet the Artists!". For this series of get-togethers, the ADKDW invites artists, cultural professionals and all interested Cologne residents to meet the artists-in-residence, exchange ideas and network or simply enjoy the music together!

Starting in October 2024, the artists Drew Kahuʻāina Broderick and Sancia Miala Shiba Nash from the grassroots film initiative kekahi wahi will be guests in Cologne. Kekahi wahi is committed to document the transformation processes taking place in the Hawaiian archipelago. Through their media-based art, they provide insights into the current reality of life in the Pacific Islands. At Dublab Cologne, Sancia, aka DJ Miala, will share an eclectic mix flowing between Japanese Folk, Hawaiian Falsetto, Jawaiian, Roots Reggae and field recordings.

This Wednesday: Fourth episode of the Jazzkonferenz Radio series! Tune in from 7-9pm as Hermes Villena and Joscha Oetz explore the dynamic landscape of Cologne's jazz labels over the last 70 years, live and direct from Hansaring in Cologne.

From renowned names such as Jazz Haus Musik, established in 1979 and boasting a collection of over 300 recordings, to emerging voices like stssts records, launched in 2019 and proudly highlighting the talents of artists from Hamburg, Cologne, Berlin, and Switzerland. Additionally, we’ll focus on Klaeng, Impakt, Tangible, JazzJazz, and the iconic MoD Records - Europe's first independent Jazz label where legends like Hans Koller, Roland Kovac and Jutta Hipp released in the '50s.

We’ll also delve into labels that might not overtly represent jazz, but resonate with its spirit such as Melting Pot Music, Jakarta Records, Wadada Records, and Papercup Records. Lots of music to explore, with room for more in the future - watch out for Vol. 2.

Museum Of No Art
The music project of artist Mona Steinwidder, Museum Of No Art, is described by herself as a metaphysical space with no location, yet enormous halls with transparent ceilings – an ever-changing exhibition of the subconscious.

Based on this metaphor, her first album was created in 2020 and released on the Canadian label Séance Centre. Since then, she has played various concerts in different locations and sometimes in special settings. For example, at the Minimal Music Festival in Amsterdam in 2023, where she was invited to play a wake-up concert for a sleeping audience. She has also published project-related works that are always on the threshold of fine art, such as site-specific music pieces for the contemporary Artspace Het Hem (also in Amsterdam) and and the soundtrack to the poems of the visual artist Mitko Mitkov. On her second album, A Serpent Called Emit, which was recently released on the avantgarde label Cosima Pitz she focuses on clarinet and other woodwinds.

Over the course of two years she has repeatedly approached the instruments in a new way, trying to overcome the clichés that come with each thing and to create something unusual and yet familiar. Museum Of No Art sounds free and unfettered on it. And that's where we find ourselves while listening to her music, in the shadow of a levitating stone.

How do we foster this growth? What existing strengths can we leverage? What implications do our actions and developments have for the city of Cologne? Do we have a measurable influence on the city? How are we viewed by other communities and cities in Germany and across Europe?

We will address these topics and more, complemented by a diverse array of music selected by our guests, and presented by dublab DJ Hermes Villena. Tune in, drop by, get involved!

The second Jazzkonferenz episode will focus exclusively on the 4th edition of the Cologne Jazzweek, featuring enchanting singer and composer Rebekka Salomea, who will open this years' Jazzweek edition with a concert at the Cologne Philharmonie alongside Genevieve Artadi and Sam Wilkes. Other guests include Janning Trumann, managing director of the Cologne Jazzweek, local musician and composer Etienne Nillesen, and DJ Hermes Villena, the program director at King Georg, who will make sure the sound is flowing from the turntables while Catalina Valencia is guiding through the show. Matiah Chinaski and DJ Perez have long held the status of hip-hop legends in their homeland of Chile and throughout South America - based on their work with Mente Sabia Cru and as a duo project that has been going strong for 12 years. And with each visit to Europe they continue to build on this reputation, teaming up with local musicians such as Retrogott or Perfektomat, the working band of Cologne musician Joscha Oetz.

Perfektomat first emerged in San Diego, California in 2001, and recently made waves with 2023's longplayer "Zeit Hat Uns (ENTBS), an album collaboration with Cologne based rapper Retrogott. Going full circle, both also collaborated with Matiah Chinaski and DJ Perez on the single "Warenkorb", and are about to take this transatlantic collaboration live. On July 18th the whole crew will share a stage for the first time, taking over Green Room in Cologne's venue Stadtgarten - mark your calendars.

As a prequel to this concert dublab will broadcast a Perfektomat live session, with DJ Perez and Chinaski joining in for conversations and DJ selections - hosted by dublab favorite Catalina Valencia. Recommended listening, tune in!

dublab back at Ebertplatz in Cologne on Thursday, July 18 for our annual summer concert, yes! Very special guest this time: Ugnė Uma. Save the date!

Berlin based Lithuanian artist and new dublab favorite Ugnė Uma joined us in Brussels a few weeks back for a radio concert, and left everyone attending amazed and with a big smile. We've been fans ever since! Ugnė combines live vocal passages with off-tune piano, radio samples, echoes from lo-fi house and other modern music, making it sound like a ballad from the sirens with loose fit jeans. Folklore coming from the busy city... Simple yet intricate, honest, original. 11/10

DJ support by dublab DE founder Joscha Creutzfeldt, expect an hour of low end infused psychedelics before to set the mood. Free entry, all ages, sound by FdV, supported by Kulturamt der Stadt Köln. Do. Not. Miss.

dublab beaming live from Cologne’s central library all day on June 29th, 2024. Super looking forward - swipe for details!

The central library at Josef-Haubrich-Hof in Cologne will be closing down for a prolonged period of time to proceed with general building refurbishments end of June 2024. On the very last weekend before the library is moving to Hohe Straße, dublab will be broadcasting a full day of radioshows and DJ-sets live from the music library on the 4th floor.

Our crew features a cast of dublab friends and residents alike, who will be sharing music ranging from Ambient, Soul, Jazz and related laidback sounds all day from 10am-6pm. We will also talk about sharing concepts, the importance of public, low-threshhold offerings and touch upon the history of the library as well.
