Despite a draw by Leicester City striker Jordan Ayew, Ghana became the biggest casualties of the tournament. Meanwhile, Comoros, Mali, Zambia, and Zimbabwe qualified. What do you think went wrong for Ghana to find itself in such a scenario after 20 years?

Dozens of volunteers in South Africa are working to rescue miners trapped for a month in an abandoned gold mine in Stilfontein. The miners, referred to as zama zama (Zulu for "take a chance"), entered the mine illegally in search of gold but are now facing dire conditions, allegedly surviving on toothpaste and vinegar. Authorities, taking a hardline approach, have blocked food and water supplies, labeling the miners as criminals and refusing direct assistance. The humanitarian crisis has drawn sharp criticism. Some miners fear resurfacing due to threats of arrest or deportation. Community volunteers, using ropes and seat belts, have been pulling people out, with some miners emerging too weak to walk and taken into police custody.

Mozambique’s government has banned protests following violent post-election unrest that has left at least 18 people dead, according to Human Rights Watch, though some reports put the toll above 30. The unrest began after last month’s disputed presidential election, which saw ruling party Frelimo’s candidate, Daniel Chapo, win with over 71% of the vote. Opposition leader Venâncio Mondlane, who garnered 20%, went into hiding, citing safety concerns after his aide and lawyer were killed while preparing to challenge the results. Interior Minister Pascoal Ronda condemned the demonstrations, labeling them “acts of terrorism” and accusing organizers of destabilizing the country using "drugged" youth. Authorities have restricted internet access, deployed soldiers, and used tear gas on protesters.

Amnesty International has reported that UAE-manufactured armored vehicles, equipped with French defense systems, have been used by Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in its conflict with the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). The use of these vehicles, identified as Nimr Ajban APCs outfitted with France’s Galix reactive defense systems, may violate a UN arms embargo on Sudan. The Sudanese civil war, which began in April 2023, has claimed over 20,000 lives and displaced 11.6 million people. Amnesty linked the French-made Galix system to battlefield use, particularly in Darfur, and urged France to halt supplies to the UAE. The UAE, accused of supporting the RSF, denies involvement and claims the allegations are part of a disinformation campaign.

Campaigning concludes today for Senegal’s snap parliamentary election, set for November 17. The vote follows the dissolution of the opposition-dominated National Assembly in September. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye aims to secure a majority, having won the presidency in March with 54% support, backed by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, who could not run due to a prior conviction. The election comes after months of political unrest and concerns over former President Macky Sall’s potential third-term bid.

Rwandan President Paul Kagame has called for fair compensation for Africa’s critical role in combating climate change. Speaking at the Africa Green Wealth meeting hosted by the African Development Bank during COP29 in Azerbaijan, Kagame emphasized that Africa suffers disproportionately from climate impacts despite contributing minimally to global carbon emissions. “Being fairly compensated for our extensive contributions to climate solutions is not too much to ask,” he stated, criticizing unfulfilled climate finance pledges and urging greater accountability to address the continent's insufficient access to funds.

Nigeria has signed a $1.2 billion agreement with China’s state-owned CNCEC and the BFI Group to revive a key gas processing facility tied to the Aluminium Smelter Company of Nigeria. The project aims to enhance Nigeria’s position as a leading aluminium producer for domestic and global markets, according to the Minister of State for Gas, Ekperikpe Ekpo. The partnership reflects growing economic ties between Nigeria and China, which have strengthened since 2016 with major infrastructure projects. Despite being Africa’s top oil producer, Nigeria grapples with severe poverty, high inflation, and a weak currency. President Bola Tinubu’s recent reforms to attract investment led to protests over economic hardships.

Mia le Roux, the first deaf woman to be crowned Miss South Africa, has withdrawn from the Miss Universe competition in Mexico due to undisclosed health issues. The 28-year-old had been preparing for the pageant, but her decision was announced shortly before the event, leaving South Africa unrepresented at the 73rd Miss Universe finals. Le Roux described the decision as "incredibly challenging" but emphasized the importance of focusing on her recovery. The Miss South Africa organisation expressed their full support and praised her courage and grace during this difficult time. Le Roux, who was diagnosed with profound hearing loss as a baby and uses a cochlear implant, has spoken openly about overcoming adversity and her hopes to showcase South Africa's diversity on the global stage. Her historic win in August followed a controversy-marked pageant that included debates about nationality and identity in South Africa.

Rwanda's health minister on Thursday said the country's Marburg virus outbreak was at an end, with no new cases for nearly two weeks, reported news agency AFP. The minister said authorities remain "vigilant" and are carrying out increased surveillance of fruit bats for the virus. Africa CDC chief Jean Kaseya had said in October that the virus was under control and there was "almost zero risk" of the virus spreading across the borders of the landlocked country. Marburg is transmitted to humans from fruit bats and belongs to the same family of viruses as Ebola.

Nigerian authorities were forced to release the minors who were facing trial for taking part in cost-of-living protests. At least 30 children were among the 76 protesters arrested on charges of treason, destruction of property, public disturbance, and mutiny in August. A cost-of-living crisis has sparked mass protests in recent months. At least 20 people were gunned down, and hundreds more were arrested at a protest demanding better opportunities and jobs for young people. Rights groups have been concerned about the crackdown on citizens protesting to express their frustations with the state of the Nigerian economy. So is Nigeria becoming notorious for cracking down on dissent and the rights to protest? Joining me is Frank Tietie, a prominent Nigerian lawyer, activist. Also joining me is our very own, Ben Adam Shemang, DW correspondent based in Abuja.

South Africa's government says it will not help 4,000 clandestine miners inside a closed mine in the country's North West province. They have been denied access to basic supplies as part of an official strategy against illegal mining. The miners are believed to be suffering from a lack of food, water, and other basic necessities after police closed off the entrances used to transport their supplies underground. It is part of the police's ‘Close the Hole’ operation, which includes cutting off miners' supplies to force them to return to the surface and be arrested.

Mali's military junta has arrested Issa Kaou N'Djim, a former deputy speaker of the transitional assembly, over "extremely serious" comments made against Burkina Faso's junta during a live TV debate. The arrest in Bamako followed a request from Burkina Faso's Superior Communication Council, after N'Djim accused Burkina Faso's authorities of staging fake coup plots during his appearance on Mali's Joliba TV on November 11. Both Mali and Burkina Faso, currently under military rule, have faced criticism for cracking down on media freedoms and suspending outlets critical of their regimes.

US Ambassador to Kenya, Meg Whitman, resigned shortly after Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election, sparking mixed reactions. Local media noted that Whitman had "pleased and annoyed in equal measure" during her tenure since 2022. Her resignation came amid growing calls for her departure over alleged interference in Kenya's internal politics and criticism for her perceived silence on issues like extrajudicial killings and abductions. Chargé d'Affaires Marc Dillard will now lead the US Embassy in Kenya.
