Drama hounded us wherever we went, during our week-long stay in , . Flooded streets, rising tides, and skies bursting open with thunderous downpours set the tone for our entire . But there was some respite now and then. And seize the day (or rather, hours 😅) we did.

Even with a canopy of ominous, grey clouds, the theater of didn't fail to impress. The central attraction of the of Aspendos in Turkey, it is one of the best preserved ancient of the Greco-Roman world.

The rest of Aspendos is not as well-preserved, but makes for rather , especially when peppered with intermittent showers of rain. Surviving include the Aqueducts, Nymphaeum, Basilica, Market Building and Odeion.

👙 Day 2 of my stay in Antalya 👙
I wake up to the wind howling a dawn ditty that no vacationer wants to hear.. Trees waving in a hypnotized trance, shutters flapping dramatically, and the clouds in an overcast sky bullying the rising sun into grey submissiveness. I go back to bed and sink deep into the bed covers. Hoping that when I wake up again, this maniacal storm would turn out to be just a bad dream.

🏖️ Twist in the tale 🏖️
No, the weather didn't improve. But the rainy days turned out be a blessing in disguise - a definite nudge from nature to slow down and soak in the luxurious comforts of IC Santai Family Resort in Belek, a quieter part of the much-frequented Antalya. Cocktail after cocktail sunk me deeper and deeper into the kind of holiday stupor I usually abandon in favour of frenzied sightseeing. And I guess I'm finally at that stage in life where 'relaxing' takes precedence over checking off every last item on an extra-long itinerary. 😌

⛲ Düden Waterfalls

Located inside the Düden Park in , , the Düden are as beautiful in the light of day as they are in the saffron colors of .
In the aftermath of some heavy rainfall, I was lucky enough to see a rainbow sitting pretty beside the falls. 🌈
There's a lovely playground in the park as well, making it ideal for kids. 🤽

You never know where a Google search might take you! The hunt for a nice playground for my 4-year-old brought me to this slice of paradise on the banks of the Rhine: Freizeitinsel Groov. The poetic forest trails, the sandy beach, and the beautiful riverside can take hours to properly explore, so make sure you have the entire day at your disposal. 👣 And yes, there are cute little eateries where you can refuel. 🍻

🌳 of Düsseldorf🌳

On this second visit to (all the more so cos of the football spirit we witnessed but more about that in another post!), my friend & I devoted an entire morning to exploring the , which one could say, is like the Hyde Park of Düsseldorf.

And right next to our hotel, we had a oasis that was perfect for fairytale strolls in the evening. I fell in love with Düsseldorf on my very first visit to the city, and this one just deepened my affection for North-Rhine Westphalia's stately and welcoming capital city. ❤️

truly feels like the heart of . Stately headquarters of the European Union mark an entire street, as do various foreign embassies. The people are wonderfully eclectic too - representing so many different cultures and colors. 'The future is Europe' - a massive artwork announces proudly. And who are we to disagree? Seen here is the ornate St. Michael's and the shopping district of Grand Place, the central square of . Sure, we got ripped off by a touristy eatery bang in front of that gorgeous cathedral. But we also got to taste a lovely Belgian blonde beer with 'notes of vanilla' (or so the bottle said), and listen to some live music on an incredibly crowded thoroughfare. , it's always a pleasure to visit. And I'm so glad you're only a two-hour drive away.

What an amazing, amazing year 2023 has been. A year of rediscovering myself and my individuality. A year of connection, passion, and positivity. Truth be told, it's a year I'd happily relive. And yet, the only way ahead is forward and all I can hope is that 2024 brings even greater highs. 🥂

Bonn, the birthplace of Beethoven, has a truly legendary Christmas market. And a Ferris wheel ride is a wonderful way to take in the sights of the historical central square. 🌁

I think it's safe to say that if there was no , there would be no .

A dainty glass of burgundy red warms your palm and heart alike. And it also seeps into your cheeks, adding a becoming blush and coaxing a smile out of your lips.

Share a glass of Glühwein, or even Glühbier with a person, and you're bound to become friends.

But Glühwein has evolved, and how. Any (or Nikolausmarkt, like my son likes to say) of repute will also offer you a headier elixir of spiked . Stiff rum or fragrant amaretto - you may choose. Both pair exceedingly well with the zesty notes of well-spiced, delectably sweetened mulled wine.

"Mit einem Schuss Rum," I say, reading out from the menu written in chalk. And when they say 'one shot', boy, do they mean it. One serving of this potent concoction and your appetite is primed to welcome everything from crispy Backfisch (fried fish) to freshly baked Fladenbrot (flat bread). And if you dare to go for a second round, you might not have much trouble visualizing Santa Claus himself.

At the medieval market in , we chanced upon an entirely new offering: Met. It was only later that I realized that Met was the same as mead a.k.a. honey wine. I had already promised myself that I'd try the whisky-spiked Honigwein at 's Weihnachtsmarkt on my next visit. But more about that another time.

The are waiting. Waiting for you to realize how pointless most of your pursuits are. The pursuit of attention, the pursuit of approval, the pursuit of more likes, better photos, prettier outfits, larger friend circles and glossier lifestyles. Meanwhile, the oceans rumble. Somewhere, the earth crumbles. A forest quakes beneath the force of a thunderstorm. An eagle swoops high over the distant plains. The sun sends ripples of magic through the sky over a wartorn land. Lives are extinguished. Lives are created. And you - what have you been up to all this while?

Still waters run . I heard this many times during my childhood from my mother and those who loved me. And I held it close to my heart, to comfort me through my extreme introversion and hesitancy to speak up.

The eloquence I possessed in the written word failed me utterly during peer conversations and any situation where I couldn't rehearse what I had to say. My mum assured me that I wasn't boring. There was a lot going on in my head - I just didn't know how to put it all into words. At times, I wasn't even sure that was true. Fact was, I was absolutely disinterested in much of what my peers raved about.

I was a late bloomer. I did catch on to 'pop culture' eventually. But my interests are still quite limited. The only difference is, I don't care any more. I embrace who I am. And if you're someone who identifies with the 'still waters run deep' adage, know that you're not alone. And that it's okay to be quirky, weird, strange, or whatever label the world chooses to pile on you.

The number of friends you have doesn't define you. The number of likes you get doesn't define you. The person you are when you're happiest - that's what defines you. That's your potential and your goal. Incidentally, the original Latin proverb is 'altissima quaeque flumina minimo sono labi' or 'the flow with the least sound.'

Chances are, you've never heard of Coo. We hadn't either, until we planned a trip to the Belgian Ardennes. 🌄

Coo is best known for its twin waterfalls (Cascades de Coo) and the Plopsa Coo amusement park. But the village paints a pretty picture too. 💕

Other things to see in and around Coo: Coo Wild Park, Domaine Berinzenne and the towns of Stavelot and Trois Pont. 🏘️

An island in the middle of the #Rhine - accessible by a bridge with fairy-tale views from Bad Honnef: that's #Insel Grafenwerth for you. And it's one of our favorite weekend escapes from Bonn (just a 20 minute drive)! Here are 7 things to do on the beautiful island: 1. Drink in the view of the #boats and the mountains beyond (the Siebengebirge) from the bridge. 2. Take your kid to the playground - there is a smaller one for the little ones and larger, more exciting playground for the older children. 3. Play a game of basketball on the spacious courts. 4. Stroll on the 15-hectare #park, have a picnic, play a game of frisbee. 5. Walk along the #river and see the ships passing by. Further into the woods, you'll find two tree stumps studded with corks. 6. When the tide is low, you can walk right into the river along a long, rocky promontory. And you'll be rewarded with a gorgeous view at the end. 7. On our second trip to Palma de Mallorca (this time with Neil in tow), we decided to ditch the touristy main city and travel to the opposite side of the island. We spent an idyllic 5 days in sleepy Cala Millor and among the many offbeat jewels that we discovered was the historic city of Arta. We climbed 180 steps to the top of the Saint Salvador Church and were rewarded with THIS view! Walking along the circular fortified walls was a lot of fun, and there's even a small restaurant where you can enjoy a coffee or beer. Nieuwpoort is a popular seaside resort and prominent town in northern Belgium. For travelers, it makes sense to divide the sightseeing in two parts: the coast and the old town. Walking through the quiet, cobbled streets of the Marktplein (Central Square) at sundown was a beautiful, though short-lived experience (cos Neil was tired and wanted to head back to the hotel). Attractions that you shouldn't miss include The Church of our Lady, which is Nieuwpoort's main church and the Belfry and Grain Hall: A 35m high tower and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
