About teNeues
teNeues was founded by Dr. Heinz teNeues as a print shop in Krefeld, Germany in 1931 and remains a family-owned company to this day. After the shop was destroyed in World War II, the company was rebuilt in Kempen, 12 km away. Dr. Manfred teNeues, the founder’s oldest son, became managing director in 1951. In the postwar years, the company’s printing business blossomed, which was soon enhanced by initial publishing activities in the areas of artistic prints and wall hangings for schools. The first range of calendars was launched in 1958, while greeting cards supplemented the retail product line. In 1977, the publishing activities were spun off from the print shop and a separate company created: teNeues Verlag (the German word for publishing house). Hendrik teNeues, Dr. Manfred teNeues’ oldest son, advanced the international business, founding the teNeues Publishing Company in New York in 1983. In addition to a diverse range of calendars, a range of paper goods and museum merchandising products was developed. Books were added in 1984, as teNeues became a longtime sales partner of Prestel Verlag and its English-language catalog in North America.
Additional subsidiaries were opened in London (1989) and Paris (1991). In 1995, Sebastian teNeues, Dr. Manfred teNeues’ youngest son, joined the publishing company, becoming managing director and publisher of the calendar product line in 1999. In 2000, the first large-scale teNeues line of books was produced, covering the fields of photography, travel, lifestyle and architecture. A short time later, teNeues branched out into successful corporate publishing titles. teNeues books usually appear in German, English and French, with some titles also appearing in Spanish, Italian, Chinese and Russian. The books are sold in over 70 countries around the world. In late 2014, the calendar publishing business was sold to the Neumann-Wolf Group. After the spin-off, the book publisher became teNeues Media GmbH & Co. KG. Hendrik teNeues remains a publisher and company shareholder.
For many decades, the name teNeues has stood for a high standard of quality. Printing quality, finishing, design and the innovative content from our internationally renowned authors are the guarantors of our successful line of published products. Hendrik teNeues adds, “Other than the quality of our products, international distribution in over 70 countries is the primary basis of our activities.“ For many years, international stars in the world of photography have been a fixture of the teNeues catalog, with names including Elliott Erwitt, Bruce Weber, Michael Poliza, Rankin, Martin Schoeller, Robert Mapplethorpe, Jimmy Nelson, and Tim Walker.
In addition to photography, other catalog highlights include interior design, fashion, art, design, architecture, and automotive. Recently, an ambitious new line of cookbooks was launched. teNeues published books with and about major companies and brands, including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, Ferrari, Chopard, Cartier, Rimowa, Bogner, Deutsche Post, Swarovski, Estee Lauder and many more.
