Mobile dev Pixelberry acquired by Series Entertainment

Generative AI developer Series Entertainment has purchased mobile studio Pixelberry from Nexon for an undisclosed fee.
Best known for mobile games like Choices! and High School Story, Pixelberry was deemed "category leader in the interactive fiction genre" by Series co-founder Pany Haritatos. Under its guidance, Series hopes to evolve the studio to "the next level."
"We love story-based games and Choices! has long been a leader in the genre," he continued. "We will [add] bigger books, new interactive features, and ever-improving story quality, all designed to deliver the things the Choices community wants.
For Pixelberry, this means using its new parent company's Rho engine. The proprietary engine has been touted by Series as the first "AI-native, multimodal full-stack game creation platform."

Tencent is ditching free-to-play shooter Synced after one year

Tencent is scrapping its free-to-play multiplayer shooter Synced a year after it launched (thanks MassivelyOP).
The PvE and PvP title debuted on September 8, 2023, but will be shuttered on September 9, 2024. Developer Next Studios, which is owned by Chinese conglomerate Tencent, broke the news on Steam but didn't explain why the project is being torched.
"Thanks so much for playing Synced and being a valued member of its community, but we regret to inform you that the game will be retired this September," reads the update. "You will still be able to enjoy the game and use any existing in-game items until the Termination Date."

Amazon Games CEO thinks genAI can help make better ideas for games

Executives at game studios have high hopes for generative AI and what it could mean for game development. In Christoph Hartmann's case, that technology may help the industry get out of its creative rut.
Talking to IGN, the Amazon Games CEO said he hopes genAI can lead to new gameplay ideas. To him, its usage "has nothing to do with taking work away from anyone," and would be extremely helpful in ensuring the industry doesn't "get boring."
With games competing for oxygen against so many things, like social media, Hartmann thinks a reinvention is vital. At the same time, he says genAI isn't a magical fix, but can at the very least, foster fresh collaboration and shorter (but maybe still-costly) development times.

Rocksteady cuts staff following Su***de Squad's underperformance

Eurogamer reported layoffs at Su***de Squad: Kill the Justice League studio Rocksteady.
On Monday, the outlet said the developer's QA team was effectively cut in half from 33 staffers to 15. Other departments were affected, though at time of writing, the total number of redundancies is unclear.
Junior and tenured staff were among those let go. Senior management has reportedly acknowledged product quality will "suffer" with the QA culling, which included employees with "specialized knowledge."
Sources told Eurogamer the anti-hero shooter's poor sales were a direct reason for the cuts. Warner Bros. Discovery has been open about the game's commercial underperformance, even as recently as last month.
