ALIPH AR: Protecting Heritage to Build Peace 🕊️
ALIPH AR is an augmented reality app that we co-created with ALIPH Foundation (@aliph_foundation), an NGO dedicated to promoting hope and dialogue through the preservation of cultural heritage. The project combines a physical exhibition with a mobile app that transports visitors to historic sites in places affected by conflict and allows them to explore realistic 3D models and visuals of protected historic sites.
One of the featured sites is Ctesiphon, an ancient Mesopotamian city in modern-day Iraq that served as the royal capital of the Iranian Empire for over eight hundred years.

After nearly a decade, we returned to Tar, a magical village nestled in Sham Valley. While much has changed—a new telephone tower stands in the village center, fewer households are farming, and a youth-led initiative is working to rejuvenate the community—much remains the same.
The natural beauty is as breathtaking as ever, and the warmth and hospitality of the people are unwavering. And here’s a thrilling update: one morning, we woke up to find numerous snow leopard tracks in our backyard!

Exploring Ladakh often means trekking to remote villages unreachable by car. One such village on our research trip was Tar, typically a 2-hour hike from the nearest road. However, with all our filming equipment and navigating through snow, it took us closer to 3 hours.
We were fortunate to have a few villagers join us on the challenging uphill journey. Their company was delightful, enriching our trek with legends and tales of snow leopards in the valley. These stories added depth and context to our mission, making every step worthwhile.
On the way back, we had some hairy, scary moments caused by a landslide, but… we survived!

Tourism in Ladakh, home to 300,000 inhabitants, reveals a challenging aspect when visitor numbers double during the peak season.
The capital city, Leh, struggles particularly in the summer months. Issues like water scarcity, traffic jams, and improper waste disposal become significant. This increase in waste also leads to a growing population of feral dogs, which pose threats not only to wildlife, including snow leopards, but also to human safety.
The attached image shows a troubling scene at a garbage dump on the outskirts of Leh.

Shepherding is one of the world’s oldest professions, and in Ladakh, it’s a role met with extremely tough conditions. Shepherds work in pastures located at altitudes over 4000m, facing winter temperatures that plunge below -20°C. They also guard their herds against predators like snow leopards and wolves, which can decimate a flock in one attack. Recently, climate change has added to their challenges, causing unpredictable snowfalls that disrupt their way of life.
We feel fortunate to have gained insights into the lives of these resilient shepherds. Adding to our luck, we arrived just in time to witness the early life of new lambs and kids—a hopeful sign amidst the hardships.

Navigating to remote filming locations in Ladakh’s winter is an epic challenge.
One daring journey took us driving up a frozen river through a valley—a nerve-wracking experience where every crack of the ice had us holding our breath and muttering prayers. Despite the car getting stuck multiple times, with our team diligently shovelling snow, we fortunately made it to this stunning valley and back without any major incidents.

Next stop on our journey: the breathtaking village of Gya, located at an altitude of 4200m in eastern Ladakh! Home to the acclaimed filmmaker Stanzin Dorjai Gya, who’s also our line producer, Gya will be our base for the coming days.
We arrived just in time for a dramatic snow storm, with temperatures diving to -30°C. This stark, stunning setting has inspired us to capture as much as we can. Lucky for us, our winter gear kept us cosy and dry in the icy spectacle!

Our time in Ladakh coincided with the first month of the lunar calendar, a sacred Buddhist month. As part of celebrations, we were lucky to witness the Gochak procession.
Hundreds of Ladakhi pilgrims – young and elderly – walk and prostrate for days, as temperatures dip well below freezing.
This procession is not only meant to liberate and purify those who participate but is meant as an offering for world peace and prosperity for all humanity. 🙏✨ 🌍

As part of a conservation campaign, he's turning ancient wolf traps (shangdongs) in villages around Ladakh into spiritual spaces (stupas)! 🐾🙏

Nine years have passed since we first grappled with the intricacies of snow leopard conservation, and we've returned to the mesmerising terrains of Ladakh, nestled in North India and straddling the borders of Pakistan and China.
Our mission this time?
To craft a mixed reality (MR) narrative that delves into the nuanced relationship between humans and snow leopards against the backdrop of climate change.
NowHere’s director-producer duo Felix Gaedtke and Gayatri Parameswaran, touched down in the snowy expanse of Leh just a few weeks ago. Arriving in Leh is via air is tough; at an altitude of 3500m, the air is thin, and acclimatisation is essential.
Even a short climb can leave you gasping for breath. Consequently, the first 48 hours demand a gentle pace, with minimal physical exertion.
