Sol Food

Sol Food A cook and a filmmaker doing whatever it takes to bring you the most adventurous cookbook ever. Sol Food Cinema was born out of an adventure.

We used filmmaking, cooking and dinner parties to roam across the world for 28 months. Our style of travel ensured that we would never be tourists. That we would always have to engage with the people around us and stay down to earth. This is how learned to work under any condition and find beauty in it the most unexpected places. After years of practice we thought it would be a waste to keep our s

kills and experience for ourselves. Now it's time to share it, working with partners who are making a difference.

You never know what life is going to throw at you, and how your reactions to it will forever change the future.

Most times we don’t pay much attention to it. We let these decisions pass by unnoticed as we go about our day and the seemingly monotonous stream of moments that comprise them. This is why travel is so helpful, because all of a sudden you are physically thrust into the unknown. Your mind kicks back on. Your eyes open again. You begin to notice things, like the face of the cashier at the grocery store, the way the wind moves through the trees or the women who just emerged from the sea and started swimming towards you. At least if you’re .please.eat

Here’s a little taste of the cooks writing. The first five chapters can be found on our website. Check it out and if you know of anyone in publishing, we would love to meet them.

Have you ever flown across the ocean to go on an adventure with someone, only to discover you might actually have no clue who they are? Well, it’s a funny feeling.

It turns out that .please.eat was far more complex and intriguing than I had originally given him credit for. I would come to learn that is true for just about everyone, but this guy was definitely a unique case:

At the time: sensitive ego-maniac, who possessed the supernatural cooking ability of a grandmother, matched only by his Napoleonic hunger for success.

If it were not for my own bizarre traits I probably would have turned back immediately.

(One thing was for certain - we both loved a good whisky, but whether that kept us afloat or on the verge of sinking is still up for debate.)

It’s hard to believe this dysfunctional relationship, or highly functional partnership mired in some form of self destruction or another, managed to survive over 1000 days on the road.

I don’t know exactly what it was that bound us together, even when the chips were down and the whisky was gone, but all these years later he continues to surprise me, and I cant imagine a better brother to have found.

Crazy. But true.

So we’ve proved that we can travel and take awesome pictures. But can we actually write?

One would think that is crucial to being a published author. Well, let’s find out.

The first three chapters of our book are up for preview on our website.

It’s finally here.

The Vagabond Cookbook!

We returned to Paris 10 years later to celebrate where this all began.
In front of Shakespeare and Co. two young souls collided. Having each read many stories, they decided instead to make one of their own.

What happened next was a life-changing adventure, spanning over 1000 days on the road,
35 countries, 42,000 kilometres (by land) 50 recipes and 50 stories of the remarkable people we cooked for.

After all this, sitting under a tree in Paris and reading a good book sounds perfect… but the adventure continues! - Finding a Publisher.

If there is one thing we learned from our travels, and from the books we have read it’s this: “Destiny does not do house calls. You have to go out and find it.”*

So prepare to see much more of us. We’re going to be relentless. Trust us, you’re going to love it. And if you want to stop us, please, publish our book. It’s actually very good. Probably the most adventurous cookbook ever. Or at least so far.

See for yourself, the first few chapters are on our website. (link in bio)

What the hell is this? It’s an AI fantasy filter that we got carried away with.
Not sure if it was really necessary or not. Real life is fantastic enough!

This journey was made possible thanks to random acts of kindness by thousands of people.

Why did they help us?

1. People are awesome.
2. We engaged.

While traveling you need to ask for directions. So you have to talk to strangers. I realize now being in my home city, where I feel like I know the place, that I am actually much less likely to approach people and strike up dialogue. But there is so much I don’t know about this place and the people who live here. My knowledge is a very small fraction of the lived experience here. How many of us are stuck in that very thin groove?

During my years on the road I began each day someplace new with a reminder - I don’t know what to expect here. I don’t know how things work here. I simply don’t know. Now that can fill one with anxiety or curiosity. I often chose the latter. When I did the world would become more vibrant and life would surprise me with countless inspiring encounters.

So how can we try to apply this to our day to day lives? How can we make a routine of exploring and reminding ourselves that today is an adventure and not a self-determined obligation?

I found that walking helps. Taking the time to be grounded and focus on the details. The way somebody has arranged their plants or decided to dress. The light of anticipation or patience in someone’s eye as they wait for an approaching bus. The lone lit window of a building at night and what story might be unfolding within.

It’s all much bigger than you or I, but together we can reach out and tap into it.

So enjoy your day and talk to strangers.

The best gift you can give: living a good life.
After all these years we finally remembered this - it’s not selfish to do what you love, so long as you are doing it for someone else. So we got down to it and wrote our cookbook. It took a bit of work to overcome the fears and insecurities around sharing our story, feeling it was ego-centric or unimportant in the face of many serious issues the world is facing. Really these were just excuses to be inactive and distract ourselves with things that truly didn’t matter. This year however something clicked. The story was not over.. it was hanging on us to bring it home. Writing this book was a chance to be honest about it and decide what kind of life we wanted to live. To take stock of what we learned; All the lessons and mistakes we picked up, gifted to us by the road and the incredible people we met along the way. (Not to forget a collection of tremendously tasty recipes!)
As Derek Walcott once wrote - ‘feast on your life’. And so we did. It wasn’t always delicious. Sometimes it was bitter to swallow. But that’s how we discover new flavours and new appreciation for the ones we love.
We will be telling you much more about the Vagabond Cookbook, but for now we just want to say thank you - to everyone who showed us how to live. We didn’t forget.
Wishing you all a peaceful end to this year, and a strong start to the next one. Good things to come.

“So here’s the plan…
Travel from Italy to Singapore.. by land ✅

Throw dinner parties until we have enough money to buy a tuk tuk ✅

Go to India, get the tuk tuk and build a house on the back ✅

Drive back to Italy.. 🧐”

“Maybe you should wash your hands…”

This photo was taken somewhere in Nepal by when we were on our journey back to the west. Somehow we thought it was possible to bring Monika, our tuk tuk, all the way home with us. To have some proof that it was all real and that anything is possible.. after all more people have stepped on the moon then driven a tuk tuk from India to Europe.

At the time it seemed impossible, and yet we were certain that it would somehow work.

It did ✅

Through curiosity, stupidity, grit, luck and lots of help. We are excited to finally reveal the whole story and share our thanks to all those people that made it possible. The manuscript of our cookbook is nearly complete and soon you can hold it in the palm of your hand. Our most absurd and fantastic master plan.

Stay tuned. And if you are in the USA, remember to vote and come eat with us! (See link in bio)

We are finally here… the city of brotherly love.
10 years ago the storyteller invited the cook to his hometown of Philadelphia.
As you might have noticed we got sidetracked a little and traveled the world.
But what matters is that we are still here, together, after laughter and tears.
We are very excited to experience what Philadelphia has to offer… many new tastes, stories and possibly even a space where to finally bring this journey home.
So if any of you wish to join us for a dinner party- We are for a month.
Come one come all.

Sometimes, you just have to find the strength to let go.

To all our Italian friends and neighbors, we are selling this wonderful vehicle: an Iveco Daily, long pass, from 2008.
It has 200000 Km on the odometer and many more in its belly.
We've created this little space to accommodate our needs of traveling and cooking in full comfort.
The Van has a small restaurant Set Up inside and the predisposition for a beer tap area.
She is very classy.

DM us if you want to know more about this beautiful vehicle!
