Extermination order in German-colonised South West Africa. Between 1904 and 1908, the colonial troops killed, poisoned and raped. Survivors were enslaved in concentration camps and had to perform deadly forced labour. Around 80 per cent of the Ova Herero and 50 per cent of the Nama - up to 100,000 people in total - were murdered and a large number of human remains were shipped to Germany.
The German government confiscated the land of their ancestors. "Generation Repair - Transnational Dialogues Namibia - Germany" will be presented as part of the current exhibition "BURIED MEMORIES - Dealing with Memory. The Genocide of the Ovaherero and Nama" at the Museum Neukölln.
The contributions from Windhoek, Otjinene, Swakopmund and Berlin struggle for an appropriate decolonial and diasporic aesthetic of resistance. How can the struggle for land and for sovereignty of interpretation over one's own memories and histories be appropriately narrated?
UN Resolution 60/147 from 2005 gives the victims of crimes against humanity the right to reparation (restitution, compensation and rehabilitation). In 2015, the German government rejected trilateral negotiations with the Hereros and Nama. In 2021, bilateral talks between the two governments led to a "Joint Declaration". Massive protests by the victims' communities claim that the UN resolution has been circumvented by excluding reparations.
