The first premiere of February takes us to Oldenburg. This evening, "Vibe(s)-Lich(t)" will be on stage (photos: Stephan Walzl), a three-part evening during which the local ballet director Antoine Jully is allowed to take a break: So-Yeon Kim-von der Beck from Korea, Alice Topp from Australia and Lilit Hakobyan from Armenia will be showing pieces that represent "vibes", i.e. moods, vibrations and charisma. In terms of form, it goes from modern dance to classical ballet, and measuring this field is known to be the specialty of the Oldenburg company under Jully. Accordingly: it's fine, even without the director. We will report back.

Today and tomorrow, the first performances in Germany of Michael Turinsky's "Work Body" will take place at the Real Dance Festival in Hanover (photos: © MIchael Loizenbauer). A week ago, the piece celebrated its premiere in Vienna, and what we heard there made us want to visit. We will be there and report whether the advance praise is justified. And in preparation: our long portrait of Turinsky from the summer of 2023. https://www.der-theaterverlag.de/tanz/archiv/artikel/das-schoenere-leben/

To be seen again today and tomorrow in Aix-en-Provence: Martin Zimmermann's "Louise", in which the Swiss choreographer and circus artist ironizes female desires for exit in a clownishly drastic manner (photo: Admill Kuyler). We saw the frequently touring piece in Zurich's Schiffbau, and in the first half of the year it will also be performed in Chur, Nyon, Zug and Paris.

Today and tomorrow, Stav Struz Boutrous (photo: Zohar Ron), a graduate of the Jerusalem Academy of Music and Dance and dancer with Batsheva and the Inbal Pinto and Avshalom Pollak Dance Company, will be performing her solo "Sepia" in London's Saddler's Wells. The choreographer delves deeply into the imagery of Georgia, as a female adaptation of the traditionally male-dominated Georgian folk dance Khorumi. With "Sepia", the artist is applying for the "Bloom Prize" in the "Emerging Choreographers" category as part of the first-ever "Rose International Dance Prize". We will be introducing her in our January issue.

On sale since yesterday: The February issue of tanz. The cover features Dada Masilo, the South African choreographer who died unexpectedly in December, to whom Amelie Deuflhard and Luise März from the Hamburg cultural center Kampnagel dedicate a touching obituary.

The second edition of the "Real Dance" festival starts tomorrow in Hanover - consciously contemporary dance, but with a little more mass appeal than last year. Among others, there will be: "Il Cimento dell'Armonia e dell'Inventione" by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker and Radouan Mriziga (photos 1-2: © Anne Van) and "Vagabundus" by Idio Chichava (photo 3: © Mariano Silva). Until February 2nd - we will also stop by and report whether it is worth a visit.

This evening there is still a chance to see "Sleeping Beauty" at Flensburg's Stadttheater (photos: Henrik Matz). This is particularly remarkable because choreographer Emil Wedervang Bruland only has the small ensemble of the Landestheater Schleswig-Holstein at his disposal: just twelve dancers. This takes his version far away from romanticized schmaltz from the start. The royal couple is a yuppie couple seeking harmony, Aurora is a cute oddball and Carabosse is a dealer. Very contemporary - and that without explicitly serving a contemporary aesthetic.

And the next premiere tonight, once again in Saxony, but in the very south, in the small town of Plauen - once a hotspot of the textile industry: ballet director Sergei Vanaev revives ancient India as a crossover with Bollywood. «Ramayana» is a danced saga - and we go there because it is simply great that Germany is making theatre and dance present not only in the big cities, but also in medium-sized towns. We will report back!

AA legendary dancer, a legendary work: John Neumeier's «Nijinsky» premieres today in Dresden, Semperoper. It´s the the story of the dancer of the century, Vaslav Nijinsky, who transformed ballet into a modern art – as dancer, as choreographer – with his impresario Serge Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes. John Neumeier has translated this life into captivating images, created in 2000 with the Hamburg Ballet. The leading role is danced by a new ballerino to Dresden, James Kirby Rogers - already more than an insider tip. And Nijinsky´s wife Romula will be danced by Svetlana Gileva, Diaghilev by Richard House. Good luck to the whole ensemble! Anyone who sees the pictures by © Admill Kuyler/ Dresden Semperoper will realise: this is going to be a great evening.

Today, a legendary company is making a guest appearance in Berlin: the Trisha Brown Dance Company, which survived the death of its founder in 2017 and is still taking the great and innovative works of the choreographer out into the world from New York. A three-part programme can be admired during the Performing Arts Season at Haus der Berliner Festspiele - including a creation by Noé Soulier: «In the Fall». We are excited!

At Lueneburg Olaf Schmidt has choreographed an evening based on the novel by Pierre-Ambroise-François Choderlos de Laclos: «Liaisons dangereuses» from 1782. A novel built of letters from aristocratic Parisian society, which expose the intense intrigue of the Vicomte de Valmont and the Marquise de Merteuil. Former lovers, they are now accomplices in a variety of subtle and cruel machinations. Valmont's goal is to possess the beautiful and virtuous Madame de Tourvel at all costs… A very tough and diabolic subject, which was often adapted for the stage – but less for dance. So tonight there it´s the second performance – good luck!

Frida Kahlo is an icon – as painter, as artist, as creator of a pictorial world on her own. In Augsburg and Salzburg there are interesting ballets dealing with her life and art – no easy stuff. But very attractive of course in terms of theatrical effects - and dance. We have them both in our current issue - our pics come from ©) Tobias Witzgall and show the Frida of choreographer Reginaldo Oliveira is Valbona Bushkola - if you are in Salzburg, go and see her tonight!

Digital is on the rise – of course also in dance. As is AI. How to balance risks and options? Have a free read here: Q & A with Maria Chatzichristodoulou aka X, curator for digital arts, taped at Hellerau. She says: «It's still about people, about their synapses. I am sure that beauty also exists in this area, that there are moving and profound live moments in the fusion of dance and technology that do not consist of antagonism: Here the warm body, there the cold glow.» https://www.der-theaterverlag.de/tanz/archiv/artikel/rivalitaet/

Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui's «Ihsane» is a personal search for clues, a visually powerful narrative and a journey into death. Cherkaoui is a great craftsman, a keen observer. And a philanthropist. His art shows that too. Tonight and tomorrow atCologne’s Staatenhaus, on January 24th at Festspielhaus St. Pölten.

"Pay as much as you like" is often a campaign to attract new audiences, especially in the cultural sector. The Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf and Duisburg is also allowing visitors to choose how much they want to pay, for the second time, after a successful similar campaign in the 2022/23 season. Well, almost. The freely selectable price only applies to selected performances, the first being the ballet evening "Three Masters - Three Works" on January 29th in the Düsseldorf Opera House (the picture shows Norma Magalhães and Gustavo Carvalho in Hans van Manen's "Visions Fugitives", photo: © Roman Novitzky). And the minimum price is 13 euros - a bargain, but, to be honest, still quite a lot for people on low incomes. Nevertheless: good campaign! Bookable from 7 a.m. this morning via the Oper am Rhein website, by phone or in person in Düsseldorf and Duisburg.

16/01/2025

Of course, Hollywood star Natalie Portman did not dance the ballet scenes in Darren Aronofsky's film "Black Swan" (2011) herself - that was the American-ballet-soloist Sarah Lane, whose face was digitally replaced by Portman's in the cinema. In the play "Ajax und der Schwan der Schwam" at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg, Pauline Rénevier (photo: Armin Smailovic) plays the dance double Lane, and because the production enjoys playing with technical possibilities, Rénevier's face has also been changed using computer tricks so that you think you are seeing Portman. And Rénevier dances impressively, despite her profession as an actress, doing the splits, plié, battement, and occasionally going on pointe. It is clear that the 26-year-old is also well versed in ballet, hip hop and jazz dance. "Ajax und der Schwan der Scham" is definitely an interesting break-in of dance into spoken theater - again this evening at the Thalia Theater, then again from February.
