Let's take a short break... the Plauen-Zwickau theatre is having a hard time, raising money is not easy. But now there's a civic commitment: a private sponsor, N+P Informationssysteme GmbH represented by founders Ursula and Jens Hartwig, has donated a new dance floor. After they had seen a «Nutcracker». The dance may not need more «Nutcrackers» - but it does need more people to invest. Without the state pulling out of the affair, as Joe Chialo is considering for Berlin. And his colleagues elsewhere ditto. There is always a surplus that the public sector cannot afford. A dance floor, however, is basic equipment! Really!!

Tonight again - Requiem for a resistance fighter: Lillian Stillwell choreographs «Jeanne d'Arc» at Theater Münster. Even the opening scene is captivating - you feel transported into the atmosphere of Umberto Eco's novel «The Name of the Rose». Dark figures gradually enter the mystical stage shrouded in mist. Tomorrow there will be our newcomer... but today comes the one from Augsburg - three choreographies, totally appealing images (© Jan Pieter Fuhr): Alfonso López González ( #3), Thomas Kraehenbuehl ( #1, 2) and Mateo Mirdita ( #4) work with their own colleagues, as they are part of Ricardo Fernando's ensemble. The next performance is... sold out! But tickets will be available again on 26 April. Only question: Where are the female choreographers? Anyway until 26 you can pass the time with... our baby, whom you'll meet tomorrow. By the way: Lady in the first row… We're so excited...

Weimar is a hotspot of german history – in all its contradictions: you may visit the house of the eminent Goethe as well as the hell called concentration camp Buchenwald. Now choreographer Louis Stiens has premiered a production at Deutsches Nationaltheater Weimar, produced as part of part of the theme week on the liberation of the Buchenwald concentration camp and the end of the Second World War: «Plasma and Penicillin». It deals with Lee Miller, the American photographer and journalist, just been thrust back into the centre of attention by a Hollywood blockbuster. Read: «Now choreographer Louis Stiens and his ensemble explore Miller's perspective on the devastation of the Third Reich. What do her harrowing photos and sarcastic reports trigger in those of us born later? How do historical experiences remain alive? Using texts by Lee Miller, movement and language, this project attempts to approach the political and individual-psychological questions associated with the process of remembering.» Daring and challenging and necessary in our times– again 30 march and 25 April.

Mats Ek “A Cup of Coffee” in Stockholm: In colorful costumes, ten men and twenty women clothe power and relationship dynamics in physical softness and suppleness, wiping away the occasional gender comment with cleaning cloths.

Mourning in Stuttgart: Ray Barra has died at the age of 95. The former principal dancer of the Stuttgart Ballet was a pillar of John Cranko's ensemble, who created formative roles for him such as the title role in "Onegin" and Romeo in "Romeo and Juliet."
Before his time in Stuttgart from 1959 to 1966, Barra danced as a soloist in his hometown of San Francisco and from 1953 to 1959 with the American Ballet Theatre. In 1966, his active dancing career ended after a torn Achilles tendon, after which Kenneth MacMillan brought him to the Deutsche Oper Berlin as ballet master. Barra subsequently worked with John Neumeier in Frankfurt and Hamburg, then took over as artistic director of the Madrid Ballet Nacional de España-Clásico and finally, from 1994 to 1996, as ballet director in Berlin.
Since 1965, he has also created his own choreographies. Barra subsequently choreographed opera, operetta, and musical productions at the Stuttgart Opera, including "Kiss Me Kate" and "The Gypsy Baron," as well as in Berlin, Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, Vienna, Salzburg, Munich, and Madrid, including "The Nutcracker," "Don Quixote," "Swan Lake," "Raymonda," and "The Snow Queen."
With the passing of Ray Barra, one of the great protagonists of the Cranko era, he will be missed by the ballet world. The scene photo shows Barra with Marcia Haydée in "Onegin" (© Alo Storz); the second photo is by Ken Bell.

It's time to go to the movies again. For example, "Mond" is opening in German cinemas today, a film by Austrian director Kurdwin Ayub, who is also active in spoken theater, for example at the Berlin Volksbühne. But "Mond" is interesting for the dance community for another reason: It stars Florentina Holzinger, otherwise known as a radical body choreographer. In her own pieces, Holzinger performs exclusively n**e, but in "Mond" she does what the director expects of her. And she's convincing even in this unfamiliar role. Finally, the festival spirit is back! The tanzmainz festival kicks off tomorrow in the capital of Rhineland-Palatinate. Until April 5, it features top-class guest performances, as well as an exchange with the Staatstheater company. Sasha Waltz & Guests will present their successful "Beethoven 7," but Waltz will also rehearse her minimalist study "In C" with local dancers. In addition, major festival productions will be shown, including the widely touring "Zona Franca" by Alice Ripoll & Companhia Suave (Photos: © Renato Mangolin)

Tomorrow at the Landestheater Linz: "Lovetrain 2.0" by Emanuel G*t (Photo: © Philip Brunnader). Worth a visit as a play alone, but that's not the only reason we're highlighting the performance here. The costumes are also important to us: They were designed by Thoms Bradley (Photo: © Dominik Mentzos), a dancer himself by profession and whom we profiled in our March issue: https://www.der-theaterverlag.de/tanz/aktuelles-heft/artikel/multitasker-1/

Surprise: Aureliusz Śmigiel's production of Yael Ronen's play "Bucket List" at the Deutsches Theater Göttingen (photos: Thomas Müller) turns into a dance piece for large parts, with long expressive dance passages choreographed by Valentí Rocamora i Torà and performed with some interest by Tirza Ben Zvi, Germán Hipolito Farías, and Paweł Malicki. An exciting performance, a hybrid between spoken theater, musical, and plenty of dance, it's worth seeing, even if you're coming from a different genre.

Second performance tonight… One of the most touching compositions in music history is «Eine Winterreise» by Franz Schubert: A stranger moves in, moves out – this is the beginning of one of the most famous song cycles of the Romantic period. It describes a series of retrospectives and moods of a man disappointed by love on his aimless journey through a frozen winter landscape - a journey without return. Hans Zender has orchestrated the work, and now Wagner Moreira and his ensemble at Theater Regensburg are doing an original choreography – the pictures are already phantastic. We´ll have a look at the production which is thus promoted: «Fascinated by the synthesis of tradition and modernity, Wagner Moreira translates the metaphors of the piece into a clear language of movement that is reduced to the essentials. The interplay of space, sound and dance creates an incomparably visual and dramatic overall work.» We´ll see – and let you know!

Second performance tonight… «1984 – Liebe im Spiegel» by Laura Witzleben at Volkstheater Rostock. We´ll have a closer look at it, but everybody knows… George Orwells´s dsystopic vision is not far away these days… The constant feeling of being threatened by war, the arbitrariness of power, drones above our heads – interesting that dance discovers this subject. Read on the website: «The dance ensemble tells of the resistant power of two lovers who defy the conditions of omnipresent mistrust, of propaganda madness and also of physical pain. They experience strictness and control, fear and paranoia, but also the insatiable urge for freedom. The result is a gripping and haunting experience in a sparse stage setting - proving that this classic remains timelessly relevant.» Sounds exciting! We´ll let you know!
