"I dance, but my heart is crying" is a film-documentary new in cinema by director Christoph Weinert about the golden age of Jewish music almost forgotten from 1930s' Berlin by Hirsch Lewin on his Semer label.

In the "Reichsprogromnacht" on Nov 9/10th 1938 the N***s escalated their violence against Jews, destroying synagogues and many thousands businesses, including the entire stock and master recordings of both last Jewish record labels in Berlin, "Semer" and "Lukra". Most of the musicians on these recordings were murdered in concentration camps.

This documentary tells the incredible story of how collector Rainer Lotz, travelled the world to track down all 281 original 78 rpm records, and how the members of the Semer Ensemble including Alan Bern and Sasha Lurje brought this music back to life - featured in the documentary and on piranha release "Rescued Treasure - Life in Gorki Berlin".

🎹✨ Honoring the incredible life and legacy of Maurice El Médioni, who passed away in March 2024 at the age of 95. Maurice was an iconic Algerian-Jewish pianist and composer, master of blending Andalusian, Rai, Sephardic, and Arab styles.🎶

Born in the Jewish quarter of Oran, Algeria, Maurice was deeply influenced by his uncle, the famous musician Saoud l’Oranais. Maurice’s unique piano style, fusing Andalusian melodies with Latin and Boogie Woogie rhythms, made him a sensation in North Africa during the 1950s. Even after being forced to flee Algeria during the War of Independence, he continued to make his mark, collaborating with legends in Paris and later performing with international artists like the Klezmatics. 🌍🎤

Tomorrow, Tuesday 3 September, we will remember Maurice and his remarkable contributions to music. Paying tribute will be Max Reinhardt, editor of Maurice El Médioni: A Memoir From Oran To Marseilles 1938-1992, and Yvonne Kahan, his longtime manager. Their memories and stories will shed light on the life of this iconic musician whose influence continues to inspire new generations.

"Gala is an inventive, enticing storyteller, moving fluidly between past and present--and beyond--effortlessly traversing Greek temples and palaces, Cienfuegos's nightclubs and Angolan battlefields to deliver a brilliantly subversive coming-of-age triumph . . . [Call Me Cassandra is] a fascinating examination of fluid identity set against cultural expectations." --Terry Hong, Shelf Awareness

Thank you Semer Ensemble and Christoph Weinert for this wonderful film about the Rescued Treasure of almost forgotten music.

Dear friends from Berlin!

We are happy and excited to announce that the world premiere of the movie "I dance, but my heart is crying" directed by Christoph Weinert will take place on April 10 at the BABYLON Cinema in Berlin.

This wonderful movie is about the history of the Jewish recording studio Semer, which existed in Berlin in the 1900s and 30s, when the N***s were already in power, as well as about us, the Semer Ensemble.

The music, which was performed by Jewish artists recording in a studio in Berlin in the 1930s, could only be brought back to life thanks to the efforts of a musicologist and a collector Dr. Reiner Lotz who rediscovered these priceless recordings.

Here is the line-up of the ensemble:

Alan Bern
Paul Brody
Daniel Kahn
Mark Kovnatskiy
Martin Lillich
Sasha Lurje
Fayvish Schnedler
Lorin Sklamberg

The filmmaking team as well as a large part of the ensemble members will be present at the Berlin premiere of this movie. We look forward to seeing you there!

Tickets for the premiere screening of the film are available now on the theater's website, we'll post a link to the event in the first comment to this post.

SABRI BROTHERS FEAT. GHULAM FARID SABRI & AMJAD SABRI

Devoting an album entirely to the Persian poetry of Jami, a luminary of the Sufi tradition, was one of Haji Ghulam Farid Sabri's cherished ambitions for a long time. This dream came true for the Qawwali icon when he visited Berlin in July 1991 at the invitation of the Heimatklänge (“Home Sounds from Home Planet Earth”) festival, accompanied by his 14-year-old son Amjad. After Ghulam Sabri’s untimely death on the 5th of April 1994, Amjad Sabri became his musical successor, thereby passing on the Sufi Qawwali mastership of the Sabri family to the next generation. This all came to an end when Amjad was murdered for his Sufi beliefs in the streets of Karachi on the 22nd of June 2016. Thus, Jami is not only a memorial to the Sufi Muslim tradition and the Persian poet but also to Ghulam Farid Sabri and Amjad Sabri. It remains their only record in Farsi released digitally today for the first time and to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the death of Haji Ghulam Farid Sabri.
