Thank you Semer Ensemble and Christoph Weinert for this wonderful film about the Rescued Treasure of almost forgotten music.

Dear friends from Berlin!

We are happy and excited to announce that the world premiere of the movie "I dance, but my heart is crying" directed by Christoph Weinert will take place on April 10 at the BABYLON Cinema in Berlin.

This wonderful movie is about the history of the Jewish recording studio Semer, which existed in Berlin in the 1900s and 30s, when the N***s were already in power, as well as about us, the Semer Ensemble.

The music, which was performed by Jewish artists recording in a studio in Berlin in the 1930s, could only be brought back to life thanks to the efforts of a musicologist and a collector Dr. Reiner Lotz who rediscovered these priceless recordings.

SABRI BROTHERS FEAT. GHULAM FARID SABRI & AMJAD SABRI

Devoting an album entirely to the Persian poetry of Jami, a luminary of the Sufi tradition, was one of Haji Ghulam Farid Sabri's cherished ambitions for a long time. This dream came true for the Qawwali icon when he visited Berlin in July 1991 at the invitation of the Heimatklänge (“Home Sounds from Home Planet Earth”) festival, accompanied by his 14-year-old son Amjad. After Ghulam Sabri’s untimely death on the 5th of April 1994, Amjad Sabri became his musical successor, thereby passing on the Sufi Qawwali mastership of the Sabri family to the next generation. This all came to an end when Amjad was murdered for his Sufi beliefs in the streets of Karachi on the 22nd of June 2016. Thus, Jami is not only a memorial to the Sufi Muslim tradition and the Persian poet but also to Ghulam Farid Sabri and Amjad Sabri. It remains their only record in Farsi released digitally today for the first time and to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the death of Haji Ghulam Farid Sabri.

PIRANHA RECORDING ARTIST ANDREAS WEISER ARRESTED AS TERRORIST IN BERLIN

In a remarkable display of investigative prowess including the Berlin Brazil music community, Berlin's finest have struck again, this time apprehending world-renowned musician Andreas Weiser ("Heimat - Von Fern So Nah" - Degas/Weiser) under the suspicion of being none other than the notorious ex-member of the Red Army Faction, terrorist Burghard Garweg.

In a case of mistaken identity that could only be described as Sherlock Holmes-level deduction, the Special Investigation Forces (SIF) reportedly leaped into action after a startling realization: both Weiser and Garweg share the incredibly rare trait of having two eyes, a nose, and a mouth under a black hat.

Sources close to the operation revealed that the SIF received a tip from civil police officer to have spotted Weiser travelling in a public bus, clearly exhibiting "suspicious behavior" reminiscent of the fugitive Garweg's features like a black trouser, a a black shirt and jacket.

Witnesses at the scene described the dramatic arrest, with officers reportedly yelling, "DOWN ON THE GROUND, DOWN." Weiser turned around, puzzled, and saw numerous masked, helmeted and heavily armed special forces officers behind and next to him Weiser recalls “Oh s**t, they mean me. In front of me, suddenly a BFE man with his MP pointed at me. I was thrown to the ground by several hooded men and landed on my stomach on the sidewalk, my head hitting the asphalt" causing bruises and headaches to Weiser until today. When the officer asked Anreas Weiser if he knew why he is sitting here now he anwered affirmative "You've got the wrong person. It's not me you're looking for".

After taking numerous pictures of Andreas Weiser face and some close-ups of his ears authorities took off his hand-cuffs and later confirmed that Weiser was not, in fact, Garweg, but rather a harmless artist and member of civil society. The SIF expressed their regrets for the inconvenience caused to Weiser, but defended their actions, citing the uncanny resemblance between the two individuals.

Meanwhile, Garweg himself remains at large causing the police to warn Weiser that this nightmare could happen to him anytime again. For Weiser’s full story on the incident read his blog here:

It is with heavy hearts that Piranha Records bids farewell to the legendary musician Maurice El Medioni, who passed away yesterday at the age of 95. El Medioni was not just a musician; he was a pioneer, a virtuoso whose fingertips danced across the keys of the piano, infusing his music with the soul of Algerian and Jewish North African traditions.

Born in Oran, Algeria, in 1928, Maurice El Medioni's musical journey began at an early age, influenced by the vibrant sounds of North Africa and the Mediterranean and . His innovative fusion of Arab-Andalusian melodies, jazz, and Latin rhythms earned him international acclaim and secured his place as one of the most influential figures in Mediteranean world music.

El Medioni's music was more than just a technique; it was a reflection of his rich cultural heritage and a celebration.

His performances of his self-named style of 'PianoOrientale' were cultural and emotional triggers for a community, as well as an ear-and-mind opener for new listeners discovering the treasure that he carried, played and loved.

Maurice el Médioni remains an ever-inspiring example of how to create positive sparks from the encounters of different cultures. His music exemplifies the cosmopolitan atmosphere of Oran’s past music scene, when it was the melting pot for all kinds of religions and cultures.

He was one of the elite musicians of choice to have performed with the revered artists from that world, such as Lili Labassi, Line Monty, Lili Boniche, Samy el Maghribi, and Reinette l’Oranaise; as well as with Cheb Khaled and more from 'the next generation' in the later stages of his international career.

Piranha Records had the privilege of collaborating with Maurice El Medioni on numerous projects - on record and on the road - all a testament to his unparalleled talent, openness and unwavering dedication to his craft. His albums "Café Oran" and "Descarga Oriental: The New York Sessions" stand as timeless classics, and set the standard for younger generations of musicians who were inspired by his playing and his artistry.

Beyond his musical prowess, Maurice El Medioni was humble, humorous and gracious, always willing to share his knowledge and passion with others. He leaves behind a legacy that will continue to inspire generations of musicians and listeners alike.

May Maurice rest in peace and add the grand piano oriental to the piano all stars in 7th heaven.

AFROPENTATONISM is pan-African All-Star band merging two cultures. Desert blues man Alhousseini Anivolla from Niger meets Ethio-jazz guitarist Girum Mezmur in a true musical friendship. Their album ”Afropentatonism” released by Piranha Records features repetitive grooves, hypnotic jams and raw guitar sounds. Supported by Ethiopian Airlines the band will take the festival stage at Sauti Za Busara 2024 in Zanzibar.

A community of African country blues masters with a totally original guitar technique. For one thing; the left hand reaches up and over the neck of the guitar, instead of from behind and underneath. Furthermore, although played on six string guitars, they are only stringed with 4 – 3 treble, usually in G, E and D, and one bass. If a bass string is hard to find, it might be substituted by a brake cable. Tuning is achieved by ear – besides, tuning devices is overestimated anyway…

Where did these peculiarities originate? Why did they came about? Nobody knows. That's how the older musicians did it – that's how it always used to be done …
