As a Media NGO, we strengthen foreign reporting by facilitating transnational research, by educating journalists and by bringing together media workers with differing perspectives into a conversation about themselves and the world. As an Agency, we deliver stories researched on-location and offer an alternative to the traditional news ticker. We're always aware of the events about which the media

reports - and how they choose to do so. Over 250 journalists and media activists from all over Europe come together in our Network. They combine vast knowledge of their respective countries with thematic expertise, journalistic professionalism and engagement.

On last Friday morning, Lexo Keshelashvili, a journalist for პუბლიკა • Publika , was heading to work - unaware he would end up in hospital. Police broke his nose and neck simply because he demanded what's written in Georgia's constitution: EU membership for Georgia.

n-ost has long partnered with Lexo and Publika, collaborating on our Online Journalism, in-depth project, amplifying independent voices across Europe. Lexo has been a key contributor to our European weekly newsletter, consistently bringing the Georgian perspective into broader European conversations.

Right now, we're raising funds to:
• Support Lexo's medical and legal needs
• Replace damaged media equipment
• Protect independent journalism in Georgia

Donate and help us defend press freedom!

What stories remain unspoken in the margins of geopolitical conflict? In our second kitchen talk we're zooming into Moldova, where reporting seems to be a geopolitical tightrope walk.
Moldova emerges as a critical landscape in Eastern Europe, where media navigates a complex political terrain.

What's on the menu?

• What is a journalist's impact on political tensions?
• Can exposing propaganda truly safeguard democratic processes?

When & Where?

• Wednesday, 11 December
• 6-8 pm
• n-ost media hub, Berlin

In the midst of Russia's invasion, we had the honour of hosting an intensive media camp in the Carpathians, where 12 Ukrainian journalists gained skills to investigate war crimes.

Over the course of one week, the journalists worked closely with experienced trainers and dove deep into topics such as the legal frameworks around war crimes, leveraging OSINT tools for research and fact-checking, and conducting ethical interviews with survivors.

When asked about the importance of the topic of war crimes participant Artem Korol shared "For a year now, I have been writing monthly reports on how the Russians are shelling the Sumy region and how many civilians are killed or injured because of it. The recorded data proves that Russian crimes are systematic." Another participant, Anna Serdyuk added: "For me, there is an element of resistance in it and an attempt to at least try bringing criminals closer to justice."

Khrystyna Lutsyk remarked, "This camp was the most useful for me out of all the training I've attended during the full-scale war."

These 12 journalists left the program empowered and ready to put their newfound skills into practice, investigating war crimes with the support of their trainers and receiving mini-grants for their productions.

This media camp was the second organized by n-ost, in partnership with Lviv Media Forum and Інститут Масової Інформації (ІМІ), as part of the Fight for Facts project.

In October, n-ost brought together European journalists in Tbilisi to explore Georgia's evolving political landscape. The participants met with Georgian media professionals, politicians, and civil society leaders.

As Georgians are voting, we're sharing five stories that emerged from this exchange:

• ‘Gruzini głosują. Na szali przyszłość kraju, w tle wojna w Ukrainie’, Aleksander Palikot for Nowa Europa Wschodnia on how Georgia's ruling party has weaponized fear of war in its campaign strategy.

• ‘Tanz für den Frieden’, Karin Finkenzeller for FAZ.NET - Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on how Georgia's youth culture and growing tourism sector face uncertainty as pro-Russian political shifts threaten the country's emerging position as Central Europe's favourite destination.

• ‘Georgische Droom, of een nachtmerrie?’, Franka Hummels for Vrij Nederland on How Georgia's LGBTQ+ activists face mounting pressure as ruling party adopts Russia-style "family values" laws.

• ‘Fearmongering in the Caucasus: Georgians choose between “peace or Brussels”’, György Folk for Voxeurop on how Georgian Dream's anti-Western rhetoric intensifies as EU voices concerns over democratic backsliding.

• ‘Georgia’s Ruling Party Tries Winning With the Kremlin’s Ukraine Rhetoric’, Luke Johnson for Internationale Politik Quarterly, diving into the international implications of Georgia's electoral choice.

The research trip was part of n-ost's broader commitment to fostering deeper understanding between European and Georgian media landscapes.

Hei from Helsinki! n-ost is at "In the face of war - European dialogue", initiated by the Institut français de Finlande - Ranskan instituutti Suomessa, discussing critical challenges to media independence across Europe.

Yesterday, our Senior Editor Judith Fiebelkorn joined colleagues, Robert Sundman (Suomen Kuvalehti ) and Laurent Marchand (Ouest France), at Think Corner for a discussion on protecting independent journalism.

Key discussion points:
• Funding crisis deepened by inflation - especially impacting independent investigative newsrooms
• Growing threats to journalists' safety across EU member states
• Strategic abuse of legal systems (SLAPPs) to silence reporting
• Declining public trust in war coverage
• Gaps in EMFA implementation

'Small non-profit media benefit from larger media's solidarity, big media can learn from the small ones about resilience and audience engagement.' - Judith Fiebelkorn, n-ost

As a network of 500+ journalists working across borders, these challenges directly affect our mission to foster independent journalism. Together with our partners, we're committed to finding collaborative solutions that strengthen independent journalism across Europe.

Join our network and let's face the challenges together.

Hi everyone! 👋 n-ost is at the fome symposium in Dortmund, hosted by The German Forum Media and Development.

How do we keep journalism ethical while adapting to tough environments? Time to rethink “Western normativity in Media Assistance”.

Consider Latvia and Georgia. Different challenges, same goal - journalistic integrity. We had the pleasure of having Nata Dzvelishvili, CEO at ინდიგო • Indigo and Rita Ruduša from Baltic Centre for Media Excellence joining us. Plus, we received valuable insights from Dr. Anja Wollenberg, founder of MiCT in Berlin.

"What I need is support for our marketing department. Hardly any Western donor gives money for this. But the Chinese do." - Nata Dzvelishvili, CEO at Indigo Magazine

"If you say you support the independence of media and at the same time you define the topics that have to be covered, you produce contradictions." - Rita Ruduša, Founder of the Baltic Center for Media Excellence

If these topics resonate with you, we invite you to shape the future of European journalism with us and join our network.
