In October, n-ost brought together European journalists in Tbilisi to explore Georgia's evolving political landscape. The participants met with Georgian media professionals, politicians, and civil society leaders.

As Georgians are voting, we're sharing five stories that emerged from this exchange:

• ‘Gruzini głosują. Na szali przyszłość kraju, w tle wojna w Ukrainie’, Aleksander Palikot for Nowa Europa Wschodnia on how Georgia's ruling party has weaponized fear of war in its campaign strategy.

• ‘Tanz für den Frieden’, Karin Finkenzeller for FAZ.NET - Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung on how Georgia's youth culture and growing tourism sector face uncertainty as pro-Russian political shifts threaten the country's emerging position as Central Europe's favourite destination.

• ‘Georgische Droom, of een nachtmerrie?’, Franka Hummels for Vrij Nederland on How Georgia's LGBTQ+ activists face mounting pressure as ruling party adopts Russia-style "family values" laws.

• ‘Fearmongering in the Caucasus: Georgians choose between “peace or Brussels”’, György Folk for Voxeurop on how Georgian Dream's anti-Western rhetoric intensifies as EU voices concerns over democratic backsliding.

• ‘Georgia’s Ruling Party Tries Winning With the Kremlin’s Ukraine Rhetoric’, Luke Johnson for Internationale Politik Quarterly, diving into the international implications of Georgia's electoral choice.

The research trip was part of n-ost's broader commitment to fostering deeper understanding between European and Georgian media landscapes.

Hei from Helsinki! n-ost is at "In the face of war - European dialogue", initiated by the Institut français de Finlande - Ranskan instituutti Suomessa, discussing critical challenges to media independence across Europe.

Yesterday, our Senior Editor Judith Fiebelkorn joined colleagues, Robert Sundman (Suomen Kuvalehti ) and Laurent Marchand (Ouest France), at Think Corner for a discussion on protecting independent journalism.

Key discussion points:
• Funding crisis deepened by inflation - especially impacting independent investigative newsrooms
• Growing threats to journalists' safety across EU member states
• Strategic abuse of legal systems (SLAPPs) to silence reporting
• Declining public trust in war coverage
• Gaps in EMFA implementation

'Small non-profit media benefit from larger media's solidarity, big media can learn from the small ones about resilience and audience engagement.' - Judith Fiebelkorn, n-ost

As a network of 500+ journalists working across borders, these challenges directly affect our mission to foster independent journalism. Together with our partners, we're committed to finding collaborative solutions that strengthen independent journalism across Europe.

Join our network and let's face the challenges together.

Hi everyone! 👋 n-ost is at the fome symposium in Dortmund, hosted by The German Forum Media and Development.

How do we keep journalism ethical while adapting to tough environments? Time to rethink “Western normativity in Media Assistance”.

Consider Latvia and Georgia. Different challenges, same goal - journalistic integrity. We had the pleasure of having Nata Dzvelishvili, CEO at ინდიგო • Indigo and Rita Ruduša from Baltic Centre for Media Excellence joining us. Plus, we received valuable insights from Dr. Anja Wollenberg, founder of MiCT in Berlin.

"What I need is support for our marketing department. Hardly any Western donor gives money for this. But the Chinese do." - Nata Dzvelishvili, CEO at Indigo Magazine

"If you say you support the independence of media and at the same time you define the topics that have to be covered, you produce contradictions." - Rita Ruduša, Founder of the Baltic Center for Media Excellence

If these topics resonate with you, we invite you to shape the future of European journalism with us and join our network.

Sunny Madrid was the final destination for Ukrainian journalists on a trip organized by the Europe-Ukraine Desk project.

The visit began with a meeting with Spanish journalist David Jiménez, who shared his experiences as a war correspondent and editor-in-chief of El Mundo . Nicolás De Pedro from The Institute for Statecraft also shared insights on Russian in Spain and Latin America.

The Ukrainian journalists visited newsrooms like El País, El Español, and El Confidencial. Natali Sokolenko, a Ukrainian radio host, shared:

“I was pleasantly surprised by Spanish journalists' awareness of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. They understand the humanitarian consequences. Alicia Alamilos from El Confidencial sighed sadly when Oksana Khmelivska from Chytomo presented her with a book about Victoria Amelina, a Ukrainian writer who died from a Russian missile attack. I was impressed by the technological level of the Spanish media and their willingness to inform the Spanish audience about Ukraine and Ukrainians during wartime.”

Elmaz Asan, a journalist at ATR TV-channel, added: “Visiting Spanish media was an outstanding experience. We visited outlet El Confidencial, and El Español. Hearing from Spanish colleagues about their coverage of the Russian-Ukrainian war provided a fresh perspective. As a journalist focused on Crimea, I feel the need to reintroduce the issue of occupied Crimea to the international agenda, recalling the annexation in 2014 and ongoing repression against Crimean Tatars and Ukrainians.”

The Europe-Ukraine Desk also features a weekly "What about Ukraine" newsletter, a podcast titled "Covering Ukraine," monthly media hubs in Kyiv, and a grant program for cross-border journalistic collaborations focused on Ukraine. Supported by the European Commission, the project continues until the end of 2024.

An unusually rainy Paris became the second stop for twelve Ukrainian journalists on their journey across EU newsrooms as part of the project. The visit began with Valentyna Dymytrova, an associate professor in information and communication sciences at Lyon 3 University, mapping out the French media landscape and explaining their ideological nuances and the preferences of French audiences.

The professional exchange included visits to the newsrooms of Le Monde, Le Figaro, and France Medias Monde. French journalists shared their approaches to covering foreign affairs, combating Russia’s disinformation, and providing in-depth and dedicated reporting on Ukraine. Mykhailo Shtekel, a Ukrainian journalist and member of the Reckoning project team, observed:

“It is gratifying to see that the French media continue to actively follow what is happening in Ukraine and write about the Russian invasion and occupation of part of our country's territory. According to Le Monde journalists, about 30 media employees work on Ukrainian topics. The newspaper's special correspondents regularly travel to Kyiv and Donbas, and their pieces occasionally become topics of discussion in military circles. Le Figaro journalists mentioned that although Ukraine is not the main focus of the publication at the moment, during the early days of the full-scale invasion, up to 70 percent of each issue was devoted to it. It was also very interesting to see the work of TV2's “stopfakers” – they produce detailed and yet easy-to-view stories.”

The final evening in Paris featured a public discussion titled “Women in Ukraine During the War,” hosted at Espace des Femmes. During the event, Ukrainian journalists, with moderation by French journalist Audrey Lebel, discussed the varied experiences of women during the war.

Berdynskykh spoke about female fighters and reminded the audience of paramedic Iryna Tsubukh, whose death on the frontline the day before the event devastated many Ukrainians. She also talked about women taking on jobs traditionally held by men, such as coal mining. Katya Moskalyul talked about the wives of fallen soldiers, while Oleksandra Horchynska shared stories of sexual violence committed by Russian soldiers against Ukrainian women and men. “The interest from the French feminist audience in our discussion about the lives of Ukrainian women during the full-scale war was strong,” Horchynska noted after the trip.

In addition to study visits for Ukrainian and EU journalists, the Europe-Ukraine Desk features a weekly "What about Ukraine" newsletter, a podcast titled "Covering Ukraine," monthly media hubs in Kyiv, and a grant program supporting cross-border journalistic collaborations focused on Ukraine. Supported by the European Commission, the project will continue until the end of 2024.

In late May, twelve Ukrainian journalists visited Berlin as part of the project. They met local experts: Prof. Dr. Jan Claas Behrends , who discussed German perspectives on war and peace, and Wilfried Jilge, who analysed German-Ukrainian relations.

The group visited media outlets: Deutschlandfunk , ZEIT ONLINE , and FAZ.NET - Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung . They engaged in dialogues about the coverage of Russia’s war against Ukraine, and Russia’s influence on both nations.

A talk with war correspondent Katrin Eigendorf (ZDF ), moderated by journalist Anastasia Magazova, highlighted the challenges of war reporting.

The visit ended with a presentation by Ukrainian journalists at the n-ost media hub. Katya Moskalyuk presented her project "Alone," dedicated to the wives of fallen soldiers, while Yaroslava Tymoschuk presented her documentary addressing the issue of identifying killed soldiers. Tymoschuk reflected:

“The longer the war lasts, the harder it is to keep foreign media attention. Yet, after visiting German newsrooms, I believe Ukraine remains a focus. Now is the time to discuss not only the war but also broader contexts, like Ukrainian culture and stolen cultural heritage.”

The Europe-Ukraine Desk, supported by the European Commission , will continue until 2024. It includes study visits, a weekly newsletter, a podcast, monthly media hubs, and a grant program focusing on .
