Congratulations to all winners of the Opus Klassik 2024! We are thrilled to receive the award for our project „Steinberg & BSO: The DG Recordings“.

Giving these legendary recordings new shine has been an honor and a significant responsibility for us, and we are very happy that the project is so warmly embraced.

We developed an innovative signal chain that allowed us to transfer the original multitrack tapes directly to lacquer, bypassing the conventional step of a stereo mixdown on tape.

In today’s digital age, presenting a fully analog recording—one that has already sold millions of copies and represents a benchmark in recording history —is a bold statement.

The success of the Original Source Series underscores the continued demand for authentic, expertly crafted products, made with the utmost care and expertise in sound and technology.

Since our start working with immersive audio in 2018, over 600 projects have been realized at Emil Berliner Studios in Dolby Atmos.
We acted back then as consultants in the improvement of the binaural playback together with Dolby and Universal Music, and have collectively spent over 4000 hours creating for this format.

Our studio is equipped with two 9.1.4 speaker setup calibrated control rooms as well as the latest production and control tools for delivering immersive mixes and masters.

We have developed and optimized workflows to work on full multichannel speaker setup and specialized in the translation between target reproduction formats such as multichannel speaker Dolby Atmos, Apple Spatial Audio and Binaural rendering for headphones.

Consumers can nowadays experience the immersive audio via binaural headphone reproduction, multichannel speaker setup, a Dolby Atmos soundbar or any device compatible with Apple Spatial Audio.

Looking for an ideal recording studio in the center of Berlin?

Emil Berliner Studios is based within walking distance from Potsdamer Platz.
Our studio is built as a room within a room and has been acoustically treated for every kind of sound recording.

With an area of 100m2 and a reverberation time of 0,42s it is perfect for projects ranging from speech, soloists and different kinds of ensembles.

All of our four control rooms are connected to the studio and it offers the possibility for high end digital recordings as well as purely analogue recordings on tape or vinyl.

Happy Birthday Emil!

"He had the great vision that phonography contained the elements of a mass media. Being too intelligent to reinvent what already existed, he took a closer look at what was out there and, with diligence and skill, developed all the missing links in order to obtain a coherent system. [...] yes, he even thought about artist licences and copyright. Thus, even our present-day record still contains all the basic elements of the Berliner principle - Berliner is therefore rightfully considered the actual father of practical phonography, notwithstanding Edison's undisputed right of being the first."
- Dr. Hans-Werner Steinhausen, Geschäftsführer der Deutschen Grammophon Gesellschaft, April 1977

---

- Dr. Hans-Werner Steinhausen, managing director at Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft, April 1977

A little video from the recent recording session for LowSwing recording studio at EBS with Eleonora Strino, Greg Cohen and Joey Baron! This is analog heaven: pure analog recording, direct to 2-track tape and transistorless at that. Using Neumann M49, U67 and Myburgh M1, V72 preamps, a vintage DG 16-track mixing desk from 1959 and a Studer C37 from 1964. This all-tube recording is ear candy!

Every sound you’ll hear on this album is made only by me and only on the CELLO👌
Making all of these arrangements and recording every single voice has been a unique and unforgettable experience, which made me relive my childhood and teenage years 🙂
If you’re a 90s kid like me, you’ll particularly enjoy it!

10 years Berlin anniversary flashback #1: In 2019 there was a new development in immersive audio: Amazon Music HD offers a streaming platform for 3D music content. Due to our newly installed 9.1.4 monitor setup we were happy to contribute with more than 200 titles, mixed in Dolby Atmos at Emil Berliner Studios.

10 years Berlin anniversary flashback #2: The year 2018 will stay in our memories for a long time. It was Deutsche Grammophon Gesellschaft's (and thus our studio's) 120th anniversary, being the heritage of the originally Hanover-based company founded by the two brothers Joseph and Emil Berliner in 1898. For that occasion, we were asked to record the anniversary concert inside the Forbidden City in Beijing on October 10.

Check out the following video from the concert: https://youtu.be/XZXDcDGVTQs

10 years Berlin anniversary flashback #3: In 2017, we substantially redesigned our control room 1 in a short time period, which was quite intense. The digital mixing desk was removed, about 1km of multicore cable was installed and the complete infrastructure was changed into a hybrid of analog and digital environment. This gives us the possibility to use our 32-channel analog mixing desk for purely analog signal flow while the DAW can still remain the center of audio processing. On top of that, that the 1961 vintage console from control room 3 was moved here as well. On November 4, the whole setup was used for the first time in the course of the Verband Deutscher Tonmeister's "Goldener Bobby"-Award ceremony at the Meistersaal and a direct-to-disc recording with the band KALON.

10 years Berlin anniversary flashback #4: Looking back on 2016, we remember the day when recorded a bonus track for his album "57th & 9th" at Emil Berliner Studios. With today’s little photo collection we would like to thank everyone who came in to record at our studio in the past 10 years!

10 years Berlin anniversary flashback #5: In 2015, the Vatican opened its doors for a studio production with the Sistine Chapel Choir for the first time in history. We were honored to do the recording. The album "Cantate Domino" was released in the same year and more projects at the Sistine Chapel followed.

10 years Berlin anniversary flashback #6: The year 2014 was an extraordinary step in our history of direct-to-disc recordings. Continuing in the tradition of our pre-pre-predecessors, EBS took their Neumann VMS80 cutting lathe to an on-site recording with the Berliner Philharmoniker Orchestra to record all four Brahms symphonies on lacquer discs in real time. The recordings were made during a concert series and were finally released as a strictly limited edition of only 1833 copies. The image on the cover shows Sir Simon Rattle engraving his initials on one of the laquer masters.

This video shows some insights into the process: https://youtu.be/qBf3OBMjRAg

Two more orchestral direct-to-disc productions followed in 2020.
Stay tuned for more on this!
