Gölge Oyunu, is the Turkish name for an old story-telling tradition. This method uses cut-outs and light sources in order to cast shadow figures, which are then narrated by the puppet masters. Gök uses this name in a tongue-in-cheek manner in order to underline the Eastern/Turkish musical input that compiled into this new EP. He states that the amount of work and mastery needed to present these musical traditions in a manner true to its core, is what makes this work only a “shadow” of its inspirational source. “It is a lifetime of work and a connection to the land” he claims, “that makes the feeling in good maqam-based music so prominent. And I’m not sure if the synthesis me and the other electronic music artists around provide can be more than a game of shadows, but it is entertainment nevertheless.”
