For, Before, And After Silence: new website https://www.gksh.net/.

Over the past three years, I have dedicated myself to establishing spæs Lab Berlin (www.spaes.org) as a community and opportunity for you and others to engage in artistic spatial utopia at Funkhaus Berlin. This initiative stemmed from discussions and exchanges, particularly during the lockdown, prompting questions about the essence of future media art, sound art, and music in light of the conditions of our communities and economies.

As a result of this introspective process, I have decided to reassess my own work and contemplate how I can contribute to the current state of affairs with the knowledge I possess. I am deeply moved by the developments at spæs Lab Berlin, and if you are receiving this email, you likely have been involved in the ideas, planning, organization, or mindsets that supported this endeavour during these challenging times, without relying on institutional backing.
The lab is now established and has formed a community so that I can concentrate more on my own artistic work again.

During this period of reflection, introspection, and contemplative silence, I have thoroughly revisited my personal archive of compositions, installations, and publications spanning the past 20 years.
You can explore this collection here: www.gksh.net (old and new address, featuring a reconfigured website).
If you are in Berlin, please feel free to reach out to spæs Lab if you wish to visit, develop your utopian visions, seek exchange, or simply peruse a book from our library.

I extend my heartfelt gratitude for all your contributions, friendship, and support.
The continued possibility of our work is owed to the atmosphere we have cultivated and will endeavour to sustain for as long as possible.

LAB CO-FOUNDER GERRIET K. SHARMA APPOINTED AS GUEST PROFESSOR FOR EXPERIMENTAL SOUND AND SPACE

spæs lab co-founder Gerriet K. Sharma was appointed for the second time as guest professor for experimental sound and space at HfG Karlsruhe in the summer term of 2023. The research field was "Sound as a Mediatized Representation of Space — Studies, Research, and Strategies in X-Realities."

The students explored forms, architectures, conditions, modes, and transfers of acoustic perception in medial spaces by focusing on the recent developments in the production of space(s) and perceptual worlds through innovation in art, design, and VR technologies. Following up on the last semester's questions and experiences with virtual sound environments, this semester's artistic research was focused on sound installations and acoustic interventions in public spaces.

The course was completed at the HfG "Rundgang" with a concert at ZKM/KUBUS. The sound installations will be shown in several solo exhibitions in the spring of 2024.

spæs lab Berlin is cooperating with XP from Paris

spæs lab is constantly trying to bridge the practical affordances of 3D technology and the discourse around the consequences of utilizing these tools.

Therefore, we decided to cooperate with one of the most interesting and maybe soon most influential software developers in the 3D audio field: Eric Fraction Raynaud from XP Paris has changed the game by developing and publishing XP for Live.

Since 2011 Gerriet K. Sharma, while composing for IKO, has been using the “Kronlachner-Plugins” provided and maintained by Matthias Kronlachner until today. Back then, the plugins were summarising years of IEM knowledge on spatial audio. Within the OSIL project, the plugins were integrated into the research and compositional process working with IKO and utilized with the REAPER DAW. The idea was, from the beginning, to make IKO available for different backgrounds, e.g., architecture, music, sound art, performance, theatre, and sound scenography. Thus, the software for producing and steering the beams shall be free of charge and easy to learn for practitioners from all kinds of disciplines. Of course, one can easily use the plugins within MAX/MSP, PD, or SuperCollider. In 2021 IRCAM’s Spat integrated several IKO applications.

Since 2022 Eric Raynaud (aka fraction) and Gerriet K. Sharma have been working on a “bridge” between XPforLive and IKO. They started to draft their first ideas during Eric’s residency at spæs Lab Berlin, continuing their collaboration since then. Based on Gerriet’s experiences from the past 12 years with IKO compositions and performances and Eric’s rare programming skills, in January 2023, they agreed on the prototype at a joint residency at Callie’s Berlin. This application is in the beta-testing phase and is to be released in late 2023. This is a straight off-institutional collaboration to open up the possibilities of IKO to as many spatial sound practitioners and theorists as possible.

EXPERIENCING SPATIALITY IN ELECTRONIC MUSIC

Doing a piece "in spatial" means exploring a new field for many artists. New spatial audio tools, instruments, and possibilities require going beyond the stereo way of thinking, creating, and listening. Johannes Scherzer, sound scenographer and founding partner of spæs - lab for spatial aesthetics in sound Berlin and TAUCHER Sound Scenography, has published a text that deals with the experience of spatiality in electronic music. He spent a weekend in late November at MONOM analyzing the spatial phenomena within the installations and performances presented on a 4DSOUND system. The SPATIAL festival featured about 40 pieces, and almost every single one revealed interesting aspects of the use of spatiality.

NEW BOOK: KINETICS IN SOUND & SPACE

In the 2022 publication "Kinetics in Sound & Space", lab co-founder Gerriet K. Sharma contributed a chapter on the relevance of artistic research in spatial audio. He describes various approaches to interdisciplinary research on spatial aesthetics in sound while emphasizing the artistic and phenomenological perspectives as both essential and complementary to the scientific and engineering perspectives in spatial audio. Rather than just re-arranging existing concepts ("flying snares, circling sirens"), Gerriet K. Sharma argues for exploring new aesthetic territories unique to specific media. And he highlights the importance of making accessible spatial audio technologies, spaces, and research facilities to artists and designers of any discipline concerned with sonic space.

The book results from the research project KiSS – Kinetics in Sound & Space: This acronym stands for the colloquium established in 2019 by the partner universities HfMT Hamburg and HAW Hamburg. The authors illuminate the broadly conceived complex of topics from different disciplines in the sense of transdisciplinarity. Artistic and scientific disciplines enter into critical discourse with and among each other around ‹Kinetics in Sound & Space› and thus lay the foundation for this broadly based volume.

SOUND AS MEDIUM FOR STAGING SPACE: LAB FOUNDER GERRIET K. SHARMA AS GUEST PROFESSOR @ HFG KARLSRUHE

Last week, lab founder Gerriet K. Sharma has started his on as for at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Karlsruhe. The seminar explores forms, architectures, conditions, modes, and transfers of acoustic in media spaces.

Particular attention will be paid to changes in the production of spaces and perceptual worlds through innovation in and , as well as technological developments in virtual reality , to challenge common assumptions about "natural," "augmented," and "virtual" realities, and to consider what, for example, a "supernatural" reality (SNR) might be if we acknowledge that different forms of world-making interpenetrate as "combined universes" (Cristofol).

This leads to the following research questions: What can we learn from the in-between spaces and tensions between the different modes of reality production and their inherent technical logics? How can we perceive these spaces of different realities together, and how can we communicate these experiences to each other? What approaches do sound art and artistic and design-based provide for these endeavors?

The seminar will involve practice-oriented on sound works and the development of artistic concepts. The students will present the results in a final public at the end of the semester.
