Saudi Arabia said on Tuesday it has won a bid to host the 2029 Asian Winter Games at a planned mountain resort in the Gulf Arab state’s $500bn flagship Neom project.

The Trojena development is expected to be completed in 2026 and will offer outdoor skiing, a man-made freshwater lake and a nature reserve, according to the project’s website.

Trojena, 50 kilometers from the coast, lies at an altitude of 1500-2600 meters. Temperatures drop to freezing at times in winter, but the area is bone dry. Although there is snowfall in Saudi Arabia in winter, it is rare - and more so in other regions of the country. Although all snow competitions must be held on artificial snow, the energy should come from 100% renewable sources.
