Russia Asked A Teacher To Film Pro-War Propaganda. He Made An Acclaimed Documentary
Pavel Talankin worked at a school in the Russian town of Karabash, where he organized and filmed student activities. When Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Ministry of Education asked Talankin to help film its pro-war "patriotic education" efforts targeting schoolchildren.
He complied, then fled Russia with seven hard drives full of footage he and a co-director turned into a documentary. Talankin spoke with Настоящее Время about the film, Mr. Nobody Against Putin, shortly after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in the United States.
