Doc Alliance Doc Alliance is a network of 7 European film festivals. Our aim is to advance and promote the art of documentary film.

Doc Alliance is the result of a long-term creative partnership of seven key European documentary film festivals. Our aim is to advance the art of documentary film, support its diversity and continuously promote creative documentary films. The Doc Alliance festivals are:

Doclisboa
DOK Leipzig
FIDMarseille
Ji.hlava IDFF
Millennium Docs Against Gravity
Visions du Réel

With joint forces the

Doc Alliance festivals created DAFilms.com, a VOD platform to makes you discover 4,000+ outstanding documentary and experimental films. DAFilms presents a continually-updated, curated selection of the finest auteur-driven documentary cinema from the world of film festivals. In 2008, the seven festival partners introduced the annual Doc Alliance Award competition honoring feature-length films by emerging European filmmakers. A second award category for short films was added in 2021. The Doc Alliance Award competition is an important support system for new talents to continue on their film career, both helping bolster their position as artists seeking financial support for upcoming films and in helping their work reach new audiences at home and abroad. Each festival annually nominates one feature-length and one short film from its programme for the prizes. The winners are decided by an independent jury. From 2023, the network will expand its circle and annually invite a guest festival to also nominate candidates for the Doc Alliance Awards and host the award ceremony. This year, we welcome Dokufest in Prizren as our guest partner!

Memories! Four weeks ago, we’ve had the honor to present the 2024 Doc Alliance Award winners at Міжнародний фестиваль документального кіно про права людини Docudays UA in Kyiv.🏆

Huge thanks to the Docudays UA team for hosting our awards as part of your closing ceremony. Also thanks to everyone from the Doc Alliance members who joined us that day. ✨

Camille Vigny, awarded for her short film “Crushed”, travelled to Kyiv, too, and received the prize on stage by Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival representative René Kubášek. Nicole Vögele, winner of Best Feature for “The Landscape and the Fury”, and Franzis Kabisch, who got a Special Mention for “getty abortions”, both shared a video message with the audience.👏

Docudays UA has been our Doc Alliance guest partner for this year – and as now that the year enters its second half, it is already time for us to look for the next guest in 2025. If your documentary festival wants to be part of our European network for one year, head to our website and apply by July 30: https://www.docalliance.org/guest-festival-form/

A Special Mention of the Doc Alliance Award goes to “getty abortions” by Franzis Kabisch! 💐Congratulations - the jury highlighted the “carefully crafted audio-visual narrative” with which the film “addresses the crucial impact of media on the way we perceive ourselves.” It's been nominated by who has praised the "great precision, clarity and humour (yes, humour, too!)" of the film.

Franzis Kabisch explores how media images of abortion influence the emotional scripts in our heads - you can now watch the film on DAFilms: https://dafilms.com/program/1527-doc-alliance-award-2024

See for yourself how it “deconstructs the ideological assumptions behind the representations of a specifically female experience” 🥰 Let's go!

“For her audacity, her brilliant insight into the use of cinematic language, for her lucid elaboration of a personal trauma, the Doc Alliance Award 2024 for the Best Short Film goes to 'Crushed' by Camille Vigny.” 🥰 We love how the jury put into words what makes this film so special.

When nominating “Crushed”, Visions du Réel already praised the “exquisitely devised”, and the "singular combination of lucid autobiographical storytelling and eerily balletic wrecking of metal and rubber”. Camille Vigny created a highly courageous statement about the devastating impact of an abusive relationship as well as a personal cry from the dark. Huge Congratulations for the win! 💐

OUR DOC ALLIANCE BEST FEATURE 2024: “The Landscape and the Fury” by Nicole Vögele. What made the win? 👇👇

Nominated for its “dazzling pictural and sensorial portray of a place and the people inhabiting it” by Visions du Réel, the award jury members honoured this “fascinating view into the reality of the surroundings of a small town bordering the European Union”. Here, in the Bosnian-Croatian border region, today’s refugees meet locals who themselves once experienced war and flight.

The jury applauds the film “for its bravery and a keen sense of solidarity combined with mesmerizing camerawork”: Nicole Vögele sheds light on a crisis “with a unique, warm distance between the filmmaker and the protagonists.”

“Even as it reveals its fresco-like scope, its center is decidedly human” - Vision du Réel already said when choosing the film.

And now, we say: CONGRATULATIONS to the filmmaker and team! 🥳
