There is music that exists inside (and sometimes because of) a particular style. It grows from within that style, in its riverbed, sometimes growing beyond its natural habitat. Then, there is music that jumps between two styles or feeds on several ones. It can be manifested as an organic blend, mosaic cut, mixture of elements, sharp turns, and turnarounds. There’s no defined border between these two worlds and it’s useless to argue about which way is the right one. It is just a good way to describe some sonic works. Music that is hard to put in one box. It might be a very obvious feeling from the beginning – ‘I’ve never heard anything like that!’ Or it can be subtle and unnoticed until you try to describe the music to somebody else. That’s where you suddenly realize that beat is like X, but guitars are like Y and that noisy synth... did I hear something like that or it’s just strangely familiar?
Among such projects is Life on Thin Ice, an electronic one-man band of Kirill Yurchev.
Kirill is a Cyprus-based musician who creates instrumental tracks within a variety of genres adjacent to electronic and instrumental hip-hop music. He got his start by putting together a home recording studio to create foley-style sound effects and musical scores for local theatre shows while studying at the University of York – this happened in 2020, and the subsequent lockdowns gave him plenty of free time to get to grips with the recording process (with some real incentive to throw himself into this work so as to not go completely insane, anyone who remembers the lockdowns well will appreciate the feeling).

Having moved to the UK from his hometown of Moscow when he was twelve, he had been playing in various bands within different genres of music, from stoner metal to funk, for years at that point. But it was the lockdowns that gave him the space to really start experimenting with songwriting and recording on his own. While the live theatre sound path had taken him far (one of the plays he did sound for being shown at the Aesthetica film festival as an example of new methods of performance of theatre that were devised specifically for conditions of lockdown), he eventually found himself drawn more towards the music path, writing an album’s worth of material between 2020 and 2022.

This music was heavily inspired by 90’s WARP Records, as well as his deep knowledge and appreciation of the American funk scene of the 70’s and punk scene of the 80’s – all the way to more contemporary influences, such as Nicholas Jaar’s record label Other People. Being his personal project, Life on Thin Ice crosses some of the bases Kirill himself loves a lot: IDM and catchy guitar melodies. While the creation of the record was not completely DAW-less, the bulk of the arrangements that are created for Life on Thin Ice records are done within the AKAI MPC One, with the mastery of that instrument being one of Kirill’s creative goals.
“As Days Went By” is one of the results of lockdowns in the UK, which slowly but surely distilled into four-track EP. Mostly due to Kirill spending all his money on the equipment used to record these tracks, he had to choose only his favorites for professional mixing and mastering. They have some similar traits and approaches, which does not necessarily mean they are all alike. With the opening composition, ‘Greenfied (On Fire)’ being a slower, almost Boards of Canada-style IDM/ trip-hop affair, ‘Brainstoppers’ is a real banger with a guitar sample of Kirill’s playing softening the second half of the track on top of a bed of machine-timed electric impulses and discharges.
We are happy to see Kirill on board and to celebrate the release of “As Days Went By” we have added a psy-op video track to “Brainstoppers”, the most upbeat and dancefloor-ready track on the EP.
The album was mixed by Marcus Papageorgiou of AV Playroom studios in Cyprus, whose input and experience greatly shaped the sound of the recordings. It was then mastered by Vlad Isaev, better known as Scann-Tec, utilizing the Pyramix software for which he has been developing new angles of approach while trying to push the boundaries of creativity within the mixing/mastering process. The album cover was shot and edited by Kirill himself. The music video for Brainstoppers was created by zen!a.

SHASAU “Futuristan”

"That's one small step for AI, one giant leap for mankind."

Throughout its history, electronic music has perpetually danced on the brink of possibility. From Pierre Schaeffer's pioneering manipulations of wire recordings—often referred to as the first "samples"—to the revolutionary emergence of synthesizers like the ANS, Moog, and DX-7, and onwards to the inception of computerized systems and software, the evolution has been relentless. Some artists have plunged entirely "inside the box."

Whether we embrace it or not, the newest horizon of creative exploration now lies in the realm of AI. This burgeoning avenue of creative productivity poses a plethora of questions: Who truly deserves the mantle of creator? What role does the artist play? Is this innovation a mere mimicry, devoid of genuine ingenuity?

The imminent future promises to witness many clashes over these inquiries. However, amidst legal battles and philosophical debates, musicians and listeners alike are most intrigued by the unfolding narrative within the producer's studio.
While some seek to stretch the boundaries of what's conceivable, others opt to wield new tools—like fresh brushes and colors—to perpetuate their own artistic narrative.

Vadim Militsin, the mastermind behind numerous projects, ardently champions novelty in all its forms. He has readily embraced modern methodologies, evolving from a solitary bedroom electronic producer to a multifaceted orchestrator, utilizing studio space not merely as a workplace but as a sanctuary—an analogue to the classic man-cave for the music enthusiast in the 21st century.

From sample-sharing platforms to immersive field recordings, from generative software to experimental handheld applications, Vadim has consistently resisted solitary endeavors, preferring instead to partake in collaborative ventures.

In his latest endeavor, this ethos is epitomized by his seamless integration of AI into the creative process. Like a conductor commanding an orchestra, Vadim incorporates algorithms and data sets to sculpt compositions that resonate with his artistic sensibilities.

The outcome is polarizing. Uninformed observers could easily mistake the meticulously crafted compositions for conventional electronic productions, unaware of the extensive statistical analysis and data processing underpinning the creative process. Yet, amidst the debate, a fundamental question lingers: Even if he no longer serves as the engine propelling the music forward, is Vadim still the driver, his hands firmly gripping the steering wheel?

Have we, indeed, attained a level of music production so user-friendly that it verges on the simplistic, or is this technological marvel merely a frivolous distraction, divorced from the essence of true creativity? History reminds us that both synthesizers and computers were once derided as soulless contraptions devoid of musical authenticity.

In either case, "Futuristan" by Shasau, Vadim's innovative collaboration with data, heralds a new chapter in the evolving saga of electronic music...

The tracks on this album were produced entirely with Artificial Intelligence, then combined into one recording with added samples and synthesizer parts.Created by Vadim Militsin and UDIO.AI

DEEP DIVE SPECIES - Habitat

New album from NY-based virtual band.

"Habitat" is the second album created by Deep Dive Species and released by Omninorm. The album is available on all major platforms from May 3rd, 2024 with vinyl coming at a later date.

After completing their debut LP "Aquaphilia", Deep Dive Species had to take a break. Vadim Militsin, the synthesizer/keyboard/production side of the project, took a literal break away in Costa Rica. The trip did not go without sampling local soundscapes: the rainforest, birds, and the ocean.

Siggy Pop did not go far from guitar and continued exploring moods in jams and 6-string meditations. Overall though, there were no actual plans at the moment to do a follow-up.

"Aquaphilia" had left some tracks that did not make the final cut, for various reasons: the sonic flow of the album, its length, or just overall mood. Some of the tracks though were too good for the bin or a shelve.

After several attempts to compile an EP of unreleased stuff, the perfectionist side of Vadim demanded more adjustments and enhancements. And that’s where more stuff from Sergiy came on stage. The EP naturally and organically grew into the full second album.

Formally brewed with close or similar formulas and forged through the lens of the same people, it’s done by artists that did not stand still: at times more naive, at times more mature; darker, but a bit "wiser".

With tracks like "Triple Peaks", a clear nod to the legacy of Angelo Badalamenti and David Lynch, or "Seventy 7", which is slowly phased and teleported into almost 70th-80th’ electronica, or "Arizonan", dipping into the 90th with their darker, trip-hop-ish kind of vibes. Etudes like "Lost and Found" became more pronounced, little windows into vast worlds. Peaking at "Unconditional", which packs a full love-driven drama into the technically short and simple track.

Overall, the sound is more conceptual, more of an uninterrupted sonic trip. If "Aquaphilia" was a classic debut full of bright tracks fighting for attention, "Habitat" is more like a grown-up, self-confident sequence of moods.

"We, as a band, do not live in an isolated musical world", says Vadim. "Sergiy, and you can feel it in this album, draws inspiration from Angelo Badalamenti and Tame Impala, among others. And I am a synth lover and an eager and dedicated audio sample hunter. I'm constantly grazing on different sites on the net where people exchange their samples. I upload my samples and loops that I feel can be useful for someone. It's a constant anonymous exchange of ideas" - says Vadim Militisn.

"Habitat” is available on all major platforms from 3.05.2024 with vinyl coming at a later date.

DEEP DIVE SPECIES - Penultimate

The fourth single from upcoming album by Deep Dive Species

“Penultimate” is most cinematic and epic of four singles so far. It can be easily imagined in a feature film or in a documentary, blog or even ad. At the same time, it’s not a soundtrack music at all. It’s still what DEEP DIVE SPECIES usually do - a mix of electronica, post-rock, trip hop and alternative. This time with bits of IDM and even dubstep added to the dish.

Composed and produced by Vadim Militsin and Sergey Popovich, mastered by Bill Sellar @ Super Audio Mastering, released by OMNINORM.

Available from April 19th 2024.

DEEP DIVE SPECIES - Unconditional

The third single from yet unannounced new album by Deep Dive Species is here!

“Unconditional” is tender and touching suite about love. Not a love song, but a musical postcard. Beware, at some point it can make you cry or send the chills down your spine. For it has that elusive glimpse of sadness, like the one found in tears of joy.

Composed and produced by Vadim Militsin and Sergey Popovich, mastered by Bill Sellar @ Super Audio Mastering and released by OMNINORM.

The video, created by Segmentality, is an old film from a parallel universe. It is like a string of surrealistic paintings coming to life, dancing out their stories about love.

The single and video are available from April 12th 2024.

Deep Dive Species continue to press on with one more single & video.

“Salt and Water” is a second new track for 2024, after “Adventus” that went live just a week ago. Clearly and album is coming. Stay tuned for more news and enjoy the music!

“Salt and Water” is more joyful and sunny than the predecessor. It easily can be enjoyed on vacation, on a deck of the yacht or near the pool or in the shade of beach tree. Or it might simply give you a bit of that vibe in some other places. But it’s not a party music, it’s more about nature, even though it’s a bit more electronic than the previous single.

Composed and produced by Vadim Militsin and Sergey Popovich, it was mastered by Bill Sellar @ Super Audio Mastering.

The single is available from 5th of April, 2024 on most platforms.
