“After returning to the station from a house fire in District 4 (I was literally still in the shower), Engine 6 was dispatched to a car incident on Highway 58. The crash involved a pregnant mother and her three young children. The mother was in distress, hysterical from abdominal and back pain. Her children, ranging from seven years old down to just four months old, were in the back seat. While the older two girls were fine, the baby was screaming uncontrollably.

I took the baby out of her car seat and did a quick physical check to make sure she was okay. Instantly, she rested her head on my shoulder and calmed down. As my team had the situation under control, I decided to sit down and take a break, cradling the little one in my arms. Within moments, she fell asleep, safe and content.

The mother was transported for care, and our Engine 6 crew stayed with the children until their family arrived. It’s moments like this that remind me exactly why I do this job.”

**"That’s my wife.**

**In her wedding dress.**

The dress I never got to see her wear.

We got married at the courthouse just a few days before her first surgery. It was rushed—done quickly because we didn’t know if she would survive.

Later, when the cancer returned and it was terminal, we decided to plan a proper wedding.

But she didn’t make it.

She passed away two weeks before the wedding was supposed to happen.

I have so many regrets. Not seeing her walk down the aisle is one of the biggest.

But she got her dream dress. She loved it so much.

While in hospice, she told everyone who visited how amazing our wedding would be. She was no longer aware enough to realize she wouldn’t make it.

Michelle passed away without me ever seeing her in that beautiful dress.

A week after she was gone, I found this photo on her phone.

I lay in bed, unable to move, feeling both happiness and sadness.

Tears rolled down my cheeks as I laughed, remembering how excited she had been about that dress.

My bride.

In her dress.

I want to live a long life.

I want to remarry, have grandchildren, write, and teach.

I want to share what I’ve learned about love, loss, grief, and healing.

But when my time comes?

I won’t just walk to her.

I’ll run to her. No—sprint to her.

To see her again."
