As you may have heard YouTube has started deactivating monetization on some channels aimed at children and has already terminated over 50 channels that do not align with Community Guidelines and fail to be family-friendly content.
YouTube has taken tougher actions to eliminate a growing number of channels that try to pass as family-friendly while depicting highly questionable content not designed for children. Here are the following steps YouTube is making to ensure the channels are safe for kids:
1. Tougher application of Community Guidelines.
Any content that features minors and that may be endangering a child, even if that was not the uploader’s intent, will be removed from the platform.
Age-restriction policies are implemented on the content featuring family entertainment characters that contains mature themes or adult humor.
For more effective results YouTube uses machine learning technology and automated tools to speed up the process of discovery and escalation for human review.
2. Removing ads from inappropriate videos targeting families
“Any content depicting family entertainment characters engaged in violent, offensive, or otherwise inappropriate behavior, even if done for comedic or satirical purposes” will be stripped of their ability to run ads. For more details please read this information.
3. Turning off inappropriate comments on videos featuring minors
A combination of automated systems and human flagging will ensure that any comment on videos aimed at kids that can be considered inappropriate will be blocked. YouTube together with NCMEC reports such illegal behavior to law enforcement.
4. Educating and providing guidelines
YouTube will soon release a guide on how creators can and should create family-friendly content for YouTube Kids App.
