The 24th World Scout Jamboree took place from July 22 to August 2, 2019, at the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in West Virginia, USA. It was co-hosted by the Boy Scouts of America, Scouts Canada, and Asociación de Scouts de México, bringing together over 40,000 Scouts and leaders from 152 countries.

One of the highlights of this event was Cultural Celebration Day, which occurred on Friday, July 26, 2019.
Cultural Celebration Day, often referred to as “Culture Day,” was a special day dedicated to celebrating the diversity of the Scouts attending the Jamboree. The goal was to promote mutual understanding and unity by giving participants a chance to share and experience each other’s cultures.

Jamboree on the Air, or JOTA, is an annual international Scouting event organized by the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM). It’s held on the third full weekend of October each year and is considered the largest Scouting event globally, with over a million participants from more than 150 countries in a typical year.

The event began in 1957, created by radio amateur Leslie R. Mitchell (callsign G3BHK), to mark Scouting’s 50th anniversary. It connects Scouts worldwide using amateur (ham) radio, allowing them to talk to each other across towns, countries, or continents without leaving their local areas.

Here’s how it works globally:
* Purpose: JOTA fosters friendship, global citizenship, and an understanding of radio communication. Scouts learn about technology, exchange personal details (name, location, rank, hobbies), and sometimes form lasting connections like pen pals.

* Participation: Open to Scouts of all ages (Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Venturers, Guides), with stations set up at camps, homes, or radio clubs. In 2023, for instance, over 1.3 million Scouts and Guides participated, supported by 20,000+ radio operators.

* Timing: For 2025, it’s scheduled for October 17-19 (based on the third full weekend pattern). There’s no strict start or end time—just a weekend-long opportunity.

Een vlieger (in het Papiamentu “fli”) is een licht, vaak driehoekig of ruitvormig object dat met behulp van wind de lucht in kan stijgen.

Het bestaat uit een frame van dunne stokjes (zoals bamboe of plastic), bedekt met een licht materiaal zoals papier, plastic of stof. Een touw (de vliegerlijn) houdt de vlieger vast en zorgt ervoor dat je hem kunt besturen.

Op Curaçao worden vliegers vaak kleurrijk versierd en soms voorzien van een “rabu” (staart) voor stabiliteit.

Tips:
* Test je vlieger op een winderige dag, zoals tijdens de “Temporada di Subi Fli” (maart-mei op Curaçao).
* Houd de vlieger licht, anders stijgt hij niet goed.

The Jungle Book, geschreven door Rudyard Kipling en voor het eerst gepubliceerd in 1894, is een verzameling verhalen die zich afspelen in de Indiase jungle.

Het bekendste verhaal volgt Mowgli, een jongen die is opgevoed door wolven, terwijl hij zijn weg zoekt tussen dieren als Baloo de beer, Bagheera de panter en Shere Khan de tijger.

De verhalen combineren avontuur met morele lessen over loyaliteit, moed en gemeenschap - thema's die resoneerden met Robert Baden-Powell, de oprichter van de Scoutingbeweging.

Kuaresma verwijst naar de periode van veertig dagen vóór Pasen in de christelijke traditie, ook wel de Vastentijd genoemd. Het begint op Aswoensdag (de dag na carnaval) en eindigt vlak voor Paaszondag, waarbij de laatste week de Semana Santa (Heilige Week) is.

Op Curaçao, waar Papiamentu wordt gesproken, wordt deze periode inderdaad “Kuaresma” genoemd. Het is een tijd van bezinning, gebed en vaak ook vasten of het opgeven van iets (zoals snoep of vlees), als voorbereiding op de viering van Jezus’ opstanding met Pasen.

Op Curaçao heeft Kuaresma een religieuze en culturele betekenis.

Bij scouting draait een kampvuur om veel meer dan alleen vlammen. Het is een avondritueel dat warmte, sfeer en verbondenheid brengt.
