Dec 30, 1930-Nov 1, 2021
One more icon from the Marley Dynasty leaves us. We pay out “Raspeck” to Alvin Seeco Patterson, the elder and percussionist of Bob Marley and The Wailers. Seeco made his transition two days ago, Nov 1st, one day shy of HIM’s 91st coronation.
Born in Cuba December 30, 1930, to Jamaican and Panamanian parents, Seeco was given the name Francesco Willie. Upon leaving Cuba the family initially settled in the parish of Westmoreland. From there he moved on to Kingston among the tenement yards of Trench Town. Trench Town - yes, also the birthplace of The Wailers. It has been often said that Bob got turned away from Coxone Dodd’s Studio 1, by the producer himself and it was Seeco who returned with Bob the second time where Coxone made an exception and gave the young Marley a chance to start his career. Seeco, considered an “elder”Rastaman, who believed in the revolutionary music of Bob and his stance in life, went on to play percussion for The Wailers throughout the final years of Bob’s career. He too was present during the gun attack at 56 Hope Rd, that forced Bob to go into exile. Come December, it will be the 45th anniversary of the incident. So as we witness the legends of yesteryear leaving us one by one, let us never lose sight of the contributions they made to bring this music that the world has finally embraced, to our doorsteps across the globe.
Seeco, maximum Raspeck, every time. Daughter, Marcia Willie, friends and family, do treasure the wonderful memories. RIP RIP.
