How to maintain a positive attitude in the age of the crown

In the age of the corona virus pandemic, when we hear news about the number of sick and dead every day, it is really difficult to maintain a positive attitude. However, a positive attitude contributes to the preservation of mental health and should be nurtured.
A great way to train a positive attitude is the 5-3-2 technique. It consists of a few simple steps that will get you out of depression and a bad mental state.

What is the 5-3-2 technique?

5 - Refers to the top 5 people who are important in your life, or were once important and to whom you are most grateful. These 5 people should be remembered as soon as you wake up and your day should start with nice thoughts about them.
You can practice this exercise whenever you feel in a bad mood. Just think of the people who matter to you.
3 - In the first 3 minutes of each meeting with family members or friends, act as if you have met long-lost friends and rejoice in them from the heart! Don't try to criticize or change them, just make them happy.
2 - In the first 2 seconds of meeting an acquaintance, be positive and convey positive energy with words such as “I am so glad we met. You're making good progress. Good job"...
Practice a positive attitude every day, at least out of boredom.
And remember, we cannot change the circumstances in which we find ourselves, but we can change our attitude. A positive attitude contributes to the overall health of each person, so - only positive!

The rhythm of sleep and wakefulness during the COVID-19 pandemic
*Challenges and recommendations
1. Challenge ENCLOSED SPACE - sunlight is the main driver of the biological rhythm of sleep. Melatonin, a hormone secreted when we are exposed to light, directly affects the rhythm of sleep. In this regard, if we stay exposed to artificial light sources for a longer period of time, we increase the probability that we will not be able to fall asleep due to the secretion of melatonin. It is recommended to be exposed to sunlight in the morning, to stay in rooms that are nicely lit, while the light should be dimmed in the evening.
2. Challenge DISTURBED STRUCTURE OF THE DAY - due to the ambience of the reception center and the lack of space and privacy, there is a disturbance in daily activities, as well as sleep. It is recommended to make a certain schedule of daily activities in accordance with the conditions in which you are currently (when eating, when sleeping, when working / studying, when it is time for free activities).
3. Challenge EXTRA SLEEP DAY AND REDUCED LEVEL OF ACTIVITY DURING THE DAY - Drowsiness occurs in the early afternoon. It is recommended to avoid daytime sleep, due to reduced activity and fatigue during the day, or, if this is not possible, to limit daytime sleep to 20 minutes a day in the early afternoon, so as not to disturb night sleep and rest.
4. Challenge INCREASED SPENDING IN FRONT OF SCREENS - we are focused on excessive use of various screens. This leads to the secretion of melatonin, which in turn leads to an increased feeling of wakefulness. It is recommended that we set aside time in which we will not look at any screens, but will engage in other activities. Avoid screens (mobile phones, tablets, computers) two hours before bedtime.
5. The Challenge INCREASED ANXIETY, ANXIETY AND CONCERN - the various contents we are exposed to contribute to an increase in feelings of anxiety. It is recommended that we do not ask for the information we need at least two hours before going to bed. You should practice various relaxation techniques and relaxing conversation with people you trust. You can also seek professional help if you feel that you cannot overcome the anxiety on your own.

The need for sleep is one of the basic physiological needs. We sleep soundly if we fall asleep easily, don’t wake up at night, don’t wake up too early, if we sleep long enough and wake up rested. It is important that we go to bed at an optimal time - neither too early nor too late, ie. in accordance with our biological clock.
In the pandemic caused by COVID-19, sleep quality can be impaired, but you should not worry too much about that. It is most likely that sleep will be disturbed in people who had sleep problems before the pandemic, as well as that if there is a change in the quality and quantity of sleep, it will be temporary. Here are some challenges, as well as guidelines that can help you get better and healthier sleep.

For almost a year, the coronavirus has ruled the lives of all people in the world. However, numerous studies have led to the fact that the world knows the virus much better today than in the early days of the pandemic.

Research continues to reveal the facts about the virus, including a new study that presents the most common possible symptom: myalgia, or muscle pain. Progress in understanding the symptoms associated with COVID 19 could also help end this pandemic.

Researchers are now analyzing the vast amount of health data created during the pandemic to provide a clearer picture of covid-19 symptoms. A recent study published in the British Medical Journal sought to characterize COVID 19 symptoms in the Icelandic population.

The study consisted of all individuals who tested positive for coronavirus between March 17th and April 30th, 2020.

Among 1,564 people positive for SARS-CoV-2, the most common symptom was muscle pain.

Myalgia usually describes pain in muscles - that is, in ligaments, tendons and fascia, the soft tissues that connect muscles, bones and organs. Myalgia (55 percent) was followed by headache (51 percent) and dry cough (49 percent). Fever and shortness of breath were less common than previously reported.

What and how to tell children about coronavirus

There is almost no person who has not heard of the coronavirus nowadays. Children are certainly among them. The recommendation of psychologists is that we should not wait for children to approach us with questions and that the topic of coronavirus should not be avoided, because children from other sources will certainly hear something about the corona, and our concealment or avoidance of the topic can only increase their insecurity and fear. You SHOULD talk to children, but it is important to use words and explanations in accordance with their age, ie. talk so they can understand.
The conversation should start with what the child already knows about other diseases and only upgrade it with information about the crown.
1. Conversation with a preschool child (up to 6 years)
Children under the age of 6 do not need a lot of details such as the name of the virus, etc., because they will not understand them. In the conversation, you should use words that you already know and as clear and short explanations as possible. You can talk about what we can do to stay healthy, like washing our hands. The children have probably already seen people with masks, and you can answer the question about that. That's why we often wash our hands. "

2. Conversation with a school-age child
School-age children must have heard the word "coronavirus." You can focus the conversation on information about what it is, how the virus spreads, but also on ways to prevent it. For example: “This is a virus that seems to be spreading rapidly among humans. The best way to prevent this is to wear a protective mask, wash your hands and stay at home if we feel sick, but also avoid places where it is very crowded. ” A great way to empower children is to talk about what they can do themselves so that they do not get sick, which increases the child's sense of security and sense of control. Remind the child of the period when he used to be sick and then healed, that will reduce his feeling of fear. It is very important to emphasize to children that not every cough means that someone has a coronavirus. So it would be good to start the conversation with “Today everyone is talking about the coronavirus. Tell me what you heard. How do you feel about that? Is there anything you would like to ask? ”

3. Talk to a teenager
In conversations with teens, present data and facts you know and support them to seek information from reliable sources, not on social media. If they ask you something you don’t know, openly say you don’t know and together look for answers to questions that interest them, it will give them a sense of control, support and togetherness. If the child says not to worry, that's ok, respect that, but still discuss the recommendations of health experts. If a child is afraid of the possibility of infection, do not say "there is no reason to worry", but calmly listen to him and remind him of previous experiences with uncertain challenges and the ways in which he overcame it. Remind him of your personal capacities and support. Focus the conversation on "here and now" and not on "what if".
The goal of talking to children of any age is to provide them with support, adequate information and, above all, to show that we are there for them. This will greatly help them cope more easily with the current situation.

How to manage the experience of the risk and fear of the COVID19

The appearance of a new, hitherto unknown coronavirus intensifies the personal experience of danger, fear and uncertainty. Thus, fear, and thus our behavior, is often not a reflection of real risk, but of our personal experience of risk or danger. Each person experiences a different degree of risk, and fears the virus to a different extent.
Fear has the function of helping us to focus on the source of fear and eliminate it. During an epidemic, fear helps us focus on our health and take more care of ourselves. Research has confirmed that the adoption of prevention measures during an epidemic is associated with fear, so the greater the fear - the greater the respect for the measures or the greater the fear - the greater the self-care. On the other hand, excessive fear and panic can do more harm than good, because they can further upset a person and impair overall psychophysical health. In order to "manage" our experience of risk, and thus our experience of fear, here are some recommendations:
1. Follow only verified sources of pandemic information, but not excessively and constantly, but once or twice a day
2. A strategy for asking simple questions, eg: Is there a real reason that I am at higher risk of infection? Have I been in contact with an infected person? ... With such questions, on an unconscious level, we reduce the feeling of fear and increase the rational approach to the problem, and we see our current situation more clearly.
3. Behaviors that can reduce risk - Based on expert recommendations, determine what behaviors we can use to protect ourselves and others (wearing a mask, frequent hand washing, social distance…) and how it helps us, and adhere to it every day, because it reduces experience of risk and fear.
4. Reassure others - It is important to support and reassure those who are under greater fear and anxiety, because other people's reactions and other people's fear can reinforce our personal experience of fear.
5. In case of increased fear, repeat aloud all the above - verified information about the pandemic, a few simple questions about your situation, protection measures and behaviors that the person adheres to. Just as it is important to calm others, so it is important to calm yourself, and saying the facts out loud reduces the feeling of fear and helps to perceive the current situation more rationally.

In case of need for additional psychological support and help, contact one of the organizations in the field. And remember - you are not alone in this!

Stress, sickness and optimism: What can we do alone in COVID 19 time?

Following the swine flu pandemic in 2010, research showed that stress was associated with increased susceptibility to the development of respiratory infections. Emotional state is related to the work of the immune system. Positive emotions, or more precisely optimism, are associated with better physical and mental health.

Some people are naturally optimistic, others are not. The good news is that optimism can be practiced. The style that is often used is to imagine the best future version of yourself.

How is this technique being implemented?

Imagine yourself in the future, within two years, after everything ended as it was supposed to be better. You tried and managed to achieve your goals....

Think about what is really important in your life and the positive changes you desire to make. Imagine the way you achieved all these changes and how you were so successful at it. Focus on what is really important to you and what you want, not what the environment or family expect from you or what you think you should do. Imagine reaching the smallest details.

In addition to developing optimism, this can help you shape a clearer picture of your future desires and goals, as well as ways to achieve them. Write the idea on paper with a speaker's conscience, for example ′′ I'll be,... I'll have..." Repeat this technique at least once a week.

We can't affect whether the virus will show up in the world. But we can influence how we handle the situation. Optimistic people are less likely to develop symptoms of depression and have better immunity. So just positive!

Be aware of different levels of risk in different settings. There are certain places where COVID-19 spreads more easily:

1. Crowded places with many people nearby.
2. Close-contact settings, especially where people have close range conversations.
3. Confined and enclosed spaces with poor ventilation.

The risk is higher in places where these factors overlap. Even as restrictions are lifted, consider where you are going and stay safe by avoiding the Three Cs.

What you should do?

* Avoid crowded places and limit time in enclosed spaces.
* Maintain at least 1m distance from others.
* When possible open windows and doors for ventilation.
* Keep your hands clean and cover coughs and sneezes.
* Wear a mask if requested or if physical distancing is not possible

If you are unwell, stay home unless to seek urgent medical care.
