Our Story
The Biblical institute of the Faculty of Orthodox Theology in Belgrade was founded in September of 2013.
In 2014, owing to the funds provided by the Office for Cooperation with Churches and Religious Communities of the Ministry of Justice of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, work was started on the renovation of that part of the former classroom no. 5 which had been reassigned to fulfill the needs of institute. This has provided ample space for a sufficient number of bookshelves and other necessary furniture.
The key impulse for the establishment of the research library of the Biblical Institute was given by Prof. Dr. Ulrich Luz (Bern, Switzerland) who donated his entire private library of about 4,500 titles to the newly established Biblical Institute in Belgrade. The news of the opening of the Institute that echoed throughout the entire academic world, and the international conference “Christ of the Sacred Stories”, initiated a cycle of book collecting from all over Europe which will strengthen the research potential of the Institute even further.
The current structure of the Biblical Institute is formed by Assistant Prof. Nenad Bozovic, Th.D., (Institute Director), and the following associates: Prof. Irinej Bulović, Th.D., Prof. Dragan Milin, Th.D., Prof. Rodoljub Kubat, Th.D., Prof. Ilija Tomić, Th.D., Prof. Predrag Dragutinovic, Th.D., Associate Prof. Porfirije Perić, Th.D., Assistant Prof. Vladan Tatalović, Th.D., Assistant Prof. Dragan Radić, Th.D, Assistant Lecturer Danilo Mihajlovic, M.A. (Institute Secretary) and research associate Nenad Zekavica, M.A.
The aims of the Biblical institute are:
1. To establish a biblical library which will be at disposal of our postgraduate community and members of the department for pursuit of their scholarly projects. With the donation of Ulrich Luz and a number of further but smaller contingents of books, the institute now possesses a strong core of a research library.
2. The second aim of our institute is to set up scholarly projects both at the national and international level of collaboration. An area of research which seems particularly inviting for such undertakings and for promotion of the orthodox work on the Bible is the reception history, that it to say, patristic and liturgical reception of Scripture.
3. Thirdly, this institute is a crossroad of interdisciplinary avenues of research at which a number of disciplines represented at the University of Belgrade meet.
4. Fourthly, the institute has a direct pedagogical aim. This is to assist our teachers of orthodox religious education in the use of the Bible in the classroom practice. Another field is the pastoral service. In order to involve the results of the biblical studies in the pastoral life of our Church, the biblical institute will regularly organize the seminars for the priests.
5. Fiftly and finally, to provide an impetus for publishing activities focusing on translations of the seminal titles from the field of the biblical studies, but also of the outputs of contemporary Serbian authors in the same field. Further publishing plans include establishment of a series solely dedicated to the doctoral dissertations in the biblical studies, and a scholarly annual journal of the Biblical Institute in Belgrade.
