Something about the snow reminds me of my years spent caring for patients as a hospital psychologist in Hamilton, Ontario. Even in their most desperate hours, the Cross of Lorraine offered solace to those struck down by debilitating illness.
Glowing red outside my office window at night, this 25 foot heraldic cross was erected at Chedoke Hospital on Hamilton Mountain in 1953 as a symbol of hope for those afflicted by tuberculosis, which was rampant at the time.
Historically, this double cross appeared in the symbolism of the Dukes of Lorraine from 1431 and was carried on Joan of Arc's banner.
The cross was also adopted as the symbol of Christmas Seal Campaigns which started in 1904 in Denmark. Christmas Seal campaigns in North America subsequently raised millions for research and treatment of lung disease. Efforts that continued through COVID-19 to the present day.
I wrote this song in honour of not only those afflicted, but for caregivers everywhere.
